The 2018 FIFA World Cup is the 21st World Cup, with Russia hosting the final
tournament from June 14 to July 15, 2018. On December 2, 2010, Russia received
final approval as the host country of 2018 FIFA World Cup in the Swiss city of
Zurich. Russia already had a significant advantage in the second stage of the
voting, gaining more than 50 percent of the vote.

Russia is hosting the World Cup for the first time ever. Not only that, it is also the
first time the tournament is held in Eastern Europe. The World Cup is taking place
at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities.

St. Petersburg is the youngest of the big European cities. It is the only place in
the world with so many intact buildings in such a variety of styles – neoclassical,
eclectic, Art Nouveau and others. The historic center of St. Petersburg, along with
palace and park ensembles in its suburbs, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It is Europe’s leader in the number of bridges, second in the number of channels
                                        and islands.

St. Petersburg and its suburbs have 64 rivers and 48 canals, 170 kilometers of
embankments, about 100 islands and 800 bridges.

It is the northernmost of the world’s big cities and the largest of northern cities.

The 60th parallel, where St. Petersburg sits, runs across Greenland, Alaska (the
city of Anchorage), Magadan and the Norwegian capital, Oslo. Due to its location
only a few lines of latitude south of the Arctic Circle, St. Petersburg is famous for
its summer “white nights,” one of the city’s main tourist attractions, when the sun
never fully dips below the horizon. It is also the largest non-capital city in Europe.

Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, St. Petersburg has been the fourth
most populous European city, at times surpassing Berlin, Vienna, Naples and
Moscow, then lagging behind, but never outmatching Paris and London.
