The 2018 FIFA World Cup is the 21st World Cup, with Russia hosting the final
tournament from June 14 to July 15, 2018. On December 2, 2010, Russia received
final approval as the host country of 2018 FIFA World Cup in the Swiss city of
Zurich. Russia already had a significant advantage in the second stage of the
voting, gaining more than 50 percent of the vote.
Russia is hosting the World Cup for the first time ever. Not only that, it is also the
first time the tournament is held in Eastern Europe. The World Cup is taking place
at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities.

On April 12, 1961, the first cosmonaut on Earth Yuri Gagarin blasted into space
in a Vostok spacecraft delivered by a R7 rocket, which was created in Samara.
The journey ended with Gagarin’s landing near the city of Engels in the Saratov
Region. After the landing, Gagarin took a flight to Samara and spent several days
there.
During the Great Patriotic War, one of the greatest composers of the 20th century,
Dmitry Shostakovich, lived and worked in Samara. Here, his famous Symphony
No. 7 was written and performed for the first time: this hymn to humanity was
performed by the Bolshoi Theater’s orchestra.
The list of the city’s landmarks also includes a brewery, which was built back in
1881 by Austrian nobleman Alfred von Vacano. The brewery is still running and
open to visitors who wish to admire the beauty of its old Renaissance Germany-
style buildings and, of course, taste the freshly brewed Zhigulevskoe beer.
The ancient mine drifts in the Samara Region’s township of Shiryaevo are one of
the most mysterious tourist attractions in the regions. It is a whole underground
city connected by a system of tunnels, which are wide enough to easily fit a
double-decker.
Mount Strelnaya is the highest peak (375 m above sea level) of the Zhiguli
Mountains. Stone boulders atop the mountain form a small grotto, which,
according to legend, served as the lookout post for Stepan Razin’s troops. From
there, robbers could survey the Volga River for over 40 km. After spotting an
approaching caravan, they would signal their accomplices who were hiding
behind the islands dotting the river.
