editor’s letter Vol. 62 No 06/July 2018 This is Peter Palm. He’s one of the reasons the magazine you’re holding in your hands remains the bestselling and most-respected automotive publication in South Africa. The rest of them don’t have a Pete, simple as that. Pete has been a key part of the CAR team for 18 years now and, as our road-test engineer, he is the custodian for what is the most important of all our editorial pillars: our road-test data. Some of us may help out occasionally, but it’s this man who turns left out of our building several times a week and heads to the same piece of asphalt we’ve used to test our vehicles for the last five decades. The electronic, GPS-based Vbox we use might be a lot more sophisticated than the mechanical fifth wheel Pete bolted onto bumpers when he first started working here in 2000. However, getting the accurate and consistent results – so critical in the comparative testing we do – still requires the finesse, intuitive understanding and steady hand that only experience provides. Most automotive media offer car reviews but none physically tests with the rigour and thoroughness that CAR does. Each road test may be penned by one individual but it’s the result of two weeks of focused attention by all, where we each drive the car before convening to compare notes and provide feedback to the writer. Unlike our other features, you’ll never see someone’s name attached to a CAR magazine road test. They are the sum of our combined abilities and it is all underpinned by the results that this guy has brought back from our test strip. High five to you, Pete!
