ABOUT US The 1951 Coffee initiative was launched in 2015 in Berkeley, California. It is organized as a multi-faceted not-for-profit offering consisting of two complementary businesses. The first is the 1951 coffee shop(s), which operates profitably on a single location basis and is built to be replicated across multiple geographies. The coffee shops are staffed and managed by refugees and they are a funding source for facilitating 1951 activities related to refugee assimilation into the United States. The second is the Barista Training program, consisting of two locations currently, which provides a staffing pipeline for 1951 cafes as well as specialty coffee retailers nationally. Core to our mission, we provide a warm welcome to include refugees in their new U.S. communities as well as a place for refugees and the public to connect in a common space.
