This book is an exciting way to learn more about riding your bike and enjoying a healthy lifestyle. Be like a pro and complete each stage in this book to finish your Tour of Utah. the box when you complete the stages toward finishing the Tour of Utah!
What is the Tour of Utah? The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is a men’s professional cycling stage race with riders from all over the world. These amazing athletes race up and down mountains and through deserts and cities. The race is free. You can get super close to the action, so go out and cheer them on when they race through your town!
Cycling is a World Sport Professional cyclists come to race in the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah from all over the world. Historically, the sport of cycling was most popular in the western European countries of France, Spain, Belgium, and Italy. Today, world-class professional riders come from many countries including Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Poland, Isreal and the United States of America. Before You Ride Bike Helmet Safety You should always wear your helmet when you ride your bike. Your helmet should lay flat and fit snug. TALK LIKE THE PROS BRAIN BUCKET: This is what riders call their helmets!

Athlete Q&A Rally Cycling Team Rob Britton 33 years old (Sept 22, 1984) from Calgary, Alberta, Canada In 2017, he was the overall winner of the Tour of Utah. He has also won the Tour of Gila, and Stage 5 of the Tour de Beauce. BMC Racing Team Brent Bookwalter 34 years old (Feb. 16, 1984) from Rockford, Michigan He won stage 2 of the 2017 race and the prologue in 2009. He has had stage wins at the Tour of Qatar and Tour of Colorado. UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Travis McCabe 28 years old (May 12, 1989) from Prescott, Arizona. He won stage 4 of the Tour of Utah and was awarded the Utah Sports Commission Best Sprinter jersey. He also won Stage 3 of the Sun Tour and is the US Pro National Criterium Champion. I love them so much and they have taught me how to be a good and honest person. I hope to be as good of a father as my dad one day. • What was your first bike? My very first bike was an orange DK General Less BMX bike and I loved that thing! I would ride it around town all day until the street lights would come on • What do you love about riding in Utah? The scenery is unbeatable. I am in love with the southwest and you get to see all that Utah has to offer, which is super cool! DID YOU KNOW? St. George Monday, August 6 Get out and Explore! The Thunder Junction All Abilities park features a dinosaur theme that includes complete wheelchair accessibility playground equipment, climbing wall, an “erupting” volcano, splash pad, and a “roaring” C.P. Huntington 1/4-scale train on a 2,700-foot track. The ground is covered with a durable soft-surface making accessibility easier for those in wheelchairs. Cedar City Tuesday, August 7 Get out and Explore! Try this Bike Ride - Lichen It Bike Trail Lichen It is a bike trail suitable for beginning riders. The trail meanders back and forth across the face of the mountain as it climbs the west- facing slope. The rate of climb is consistently easy. The surface is 100% dirt with no tricky stuff. STAGE 1 Activity DID YOU KNOW? Checking the air in your bike tires before you ride is a smart way to stay safe!
Healthy Eating Pro riders pick up a special bag of food and drinks called a musette during the race. The bags contain healthy items to give the bikers water, carbs, and protein. Carbs come from foods like fruit, carrots, and crackers, while protein comes from things like peanut butter, nuts, yogurt, and milk. These nutrients are extra important fuel from food and drinks that keeps our muscles working. This way, the riders have energy to ride as fast as they can without bonking! Choose Water over Sugary Drinks! Sugar is added to many foods and drinks to make them taste sweeter. Added sugars can be a problem in our diets because consuming too many of them is harmful to our health. To keep your body hydrated without getting too much sugar, choose water! Water has no sugar in it. Water helps to keep your body cool, moves nutrients throughout your body, and helps your body to get rid of things that it does not need. Payson City Wednesday, August 8 Get out and Explore! The Jones Ranch Trail is an easy to intermediate trail in Payson Canyon near Payson Lakes, perfect for a short ride by a beginning mountain biker. The trail can be ridden out-and-back, or as a loop using a short section of the Nebo Loop road, riding the trail either uphill or downhill. Antelope Island to Bountiful Thursday, August 9 Get out and Explore! The Legacy Parkway Trail is a 14-mile trail adjacent to the Legacy Parkway in southern Davis County. There are a number of trailheads along the way providing access to the Legacy Parkway Trail, but trail users should note that they do not offer restrooms or drinking fountains. Trailhead: The Legacy Parkway Trail TALK LIKE THE PROS ATTACK: This is when a rider suddenly speeds up to get ahead of the other cyclists.

Salt Lake City Friday, August 10 Get out and Explore! Enjoy the bike and hike friendly City Creek Canyon Trail just inside Memory Grove Park. Follow it up with a visit to Capitol Hill and a stop at the visitor’s center located across the street from the Utah State Capitol. STAGE 4 Activity Match the super power to the super food. RED = energy to run, jump, play and bike! (carbs/natural sugars) YELLOW = fights off sickness so you feel strong (vitamin C) ORANGE = keeps your eyes healthy so you have super sight (beta-carotene) BROWN = feeds your brain so it’s super smart (healthy fats) GREEN = helps move food through your body so nothing gets stuck (fiber) PURPLE = helps your body heal from an injury super fast (antioxidants) DID YOU KNOW? Canyons Village to Snowbird Resort Saturday, August 11 Get out and Explore! Check out the all-new Canyon’s Village at Vail Resorts this summer. Enjoy mountain bike trails, mini golf, outdoor concerts and weekly farmer’s markets. Summer activities at Snowbird include the alpine slide, tram rides, ropes course gemstone mining and plenty of hiking trails. TALK LIKE THE PROS CLIMB: This is when cyclists ride their bikes up steep hills and mountains.

Cyclists compete in road races as part of a team. The team includes different types of riders that support each other in different ways. These riders talk with each other during the race and help each other cross the finish line! Park City Sunday, August 12 Get out and Explore! Round Valley is a mountain biking trail complex located between the eastern edge of Park City and US-40. Trails are well-marked with signs at intersections. Fast Pitch to Round Valley Express is an easy, family-friendly 6.1 miles with about 200 vertical feet of climbing. Trailhead: Quinn’s near Park City Sports Complex TALK LIKE THE PROS PODIUM: This is where the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place riders get to stand once the race is over.

Race Like a Pro! Ride your bike across the same finish line as the Tour of Utah professional cyclists. Ask your parents about being part of Sprint to the Finish.
Free Admission to Sprint to the Finish Kids Bike Race No pre-registration is needed. Parents must sign waiver before child can participate. Sign up your children, ages 5-12, at the University of Utah Health booth in the KUTV 2 Healthy Living Expo each day of the race.
