WE HAVE A FANTASTIC LINE-UP OF INTERNATIONAL SOLOISTS AND CONDUCTORS FOR OUR 2018/19 SEASON. Two themes: “young musicians” and “competition” are woven into the year headlined by the second of our own International Young Musicians Competition Peter Donohoe is a name familiar to concert- goers both locally and internationally. Peter won many competition prizes culminating in the medal for the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, since when he has built an extraordinary world-wide Arno career. Jennifer has gone on to become a soloist of international renown, playing at the Proms and in some of the world’s iconic concert halls with many of its leading orchestras. Continuing the theme for November, our concert of music and remembrance marking the centenary of the end of WW1 features 2018 BBC Young Musician Strings winner, Maxim Calver. Famous for his film music, Korngold’s violin concerto has also quickly become a firm favourite with audiences and performers. So how do you follow that? With probably the biggest tunes and most romantic themes in all of symphonic history, Rachmaninov’s Second. If you’ve never heard the sumptuous, glowing ending of this work, think of his second piano concerto then double it!
