M
any of us will remember 2017 as a year when tension finally saw some release—where
anticipation gave way to open conversation, unrest, and most importantly, participation.
A new administration led many Americans to attend their first protest, to become allies,
to replace reaction with anticipation, and to ask, above all else, “What more can I do?”
AltaMed’s employees were no exception. Our team of nearly 2,700 had access to care in mind while
advocating for Affordable Care Act and Community Health Center funding, providing health care
coverage enrollment support to thousands of patients and community members, and creating new
routes to assistance. You will read about some of our achievements in health care, education, and
safety in the pages to follow—I am extremely proud of the movement we’ve made.
In 2017, we also expanded access to quality care by opening a beautiful new medical and dental site
in South Gate, moving our PACE center in Huntington Park to a center adjacent to our Huntington
Park medical office, and expanding on our partnership with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles so that
pediatric patients in the South Gate area have access to urgent care services.
We are spending 2017 through 2019 on the transformation to value-based care, which is poised
to soon become the standard model in health care. I am proud to say that we diligently prepared
our financial standing for this next phase, which will be critical to remaining a relevant industry
leader as the health care landscape evolves. The way we deliver our services is beginning to change,
particularly within our specialty fields. We continue to expand our scope of services, growing our
health education and prevention efforts, as well as a civic engagement initiative that seeks to
activate community involvement in advocating for public resources like affordable food, housing, and
health care. We are also getting ready to invest in a brand-new electronic health records system, and
in 2018, will celebrate the grand openings of two new medical and dental sites in Commerce and
Westlake. I am eager to share all that we have in store.

Our dental providers have your health in mind.
We know that dental screenings can have a big impact on
a patient’s overall health. Every dental patient at AltaMed
receives a blood pressure screening before their exam.
We’ve caught heart attacks in time to send our patients to
the emergency room, and referred high-risk patients to our
medical teams. But we also prioritize the safety of our dental
procedures by maintaining and testing our water lines. Regular
water line testing and irrigation means common procedures
like root canals are safe, every single time. And when one in
three children in Orange County has untreated tooth decay
that needs attending to, safety can’t be underrated.

We’re teaching new moms to prevent
chronic disease from day one.
Breastfeeding during infancy has been shown to help
prevent chronic diseases like hypertension, obesity, and
type 2 diabetes in adulthood. In AltaMed’s East Los Angeles
service area, 93.5 percent of new babies begin breastfeeding,
but only 45 percent continue for at least six months. To
combat chronic disease early on, we provide lactation clinics
and support groups at six of our Los Angeles and Orange
County sites—this means answering questions about how to
breastfeed and educating new moms on their right to pump
once they return to work. These classes are offered free of
charge to all community members, regardless of coverage.
We’re partnering with local schools.
In East Los Angeles, 67 percent of adults are overweight or obese. So we’re
looking to establish good habits early on by working with local school districts to
create healthy kids. Last year, our Health Education and Wellness team helped the
Whittier City School District assess and update its wellness policy, which requires
the adoption of goals related to nutrition education and physical activity. The new
policy prohibits the advertising of non-nutritious foods and beverages, implements
physical education requirements for elementary and middle school students, and
encourages participation in the school lunch program by assigning every student
a meal PIN number so that low-income students are not stigmatized for free
or reduced-price meals. Our team also collaborated with the Los Nietos School
District to assess and revise a district wellness policy following similar mandates
and guidelines, introduced to the school board in December 2017.

We’re closing the gap in our health care workforce.
California is expected to fall short of about 8,200 physicians by 2030.
This doesn’t even factor in the supporting roles that allow the health care
industry to function. Through our Health Fellowship and AmeriCorps
programs, our Workforce Development team places college students and
recent grads into a variety of AltaMed departments to learn more about
their areas of interest. We also support the Los Angeles Unified School
District’s Linked Learning program, which places high school students on
pathways to prepare them for college and career success, and through the
UnidosUS Escalera Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM) program, we provide case management and career exploration to
even more local students.

We’re actively creating access to health care,
without exception.
With the Affordable Care Act at risk, it’s more important than
ever that we let our community know their options. We offer
a Health Insurance Resource Center in Santa Ana, as well as
Certified Enrollment Counselors at several of our sites in Los
Angeles County, to guide our community members through the
health care coverage enrollment or renewal process, regardless
of whether or not they are AltaMed members. Between
September 2016 and June 2017, we helped enroll or renew
coverage for more than 2,800 individuals. Outside of the open
enrollment period, we offer Medi-Cal enrollment guidance
year-round. And our doors are always open, regardless of
whether or not an individual has coverage.
Our employees are just as committed as you are.
We are close to our patients, and we know when they could use a
little help. In March 2017, AltaMed launched an employee giving
program called AltaMed GIVES. In less than one year, employees
pledged more than $92,000 to be used beyond our standard
scope of care, providing emergency funds for areas like housing
assistance and holiday meals, and supplies like hoodies, blankets,
and gloves to our patients most in need. The GIVES program
also launched a holiday food drive, and matched $4,000 in funds
donated to our annual employee toy drive. During the 2017
holiday season, we were able to distribute 35 bags of food, 660
winter clothing packs, and 2,854 toys to our patients.

Diabetes Prevention
I
n California, 46 percent of all adults are estimated to have prediabetes
or undiagnosed diabetes. An additional 9 percent of California’s
population has already been diagnosed with diabetes.

AltaMed offers Diabetes Group Visits, a six-week program to help our
diabetic patients track progress with medication and lifestyle changes, at
most of our Los Angeles and Orange County sites. For those who want
to prevent diabetes before it begins, we also offer a Diabetes Prevention
Program. Currently based at our offices in Boyle Heights and Anaheim,
the program is for select patients at risk of diabetes and related
complications. The one-year program aims to help participants lose 5-10
percent of their body weight and develop sustainable habits that benefit
themselves and their families.
Margarita, a grandmother of five and longtime special education
teacher, realized her weight had gradually crept up to 194 pounds.

She had become both prediabetic and hypertensive, and was placed
on medication to lower her blood pressure. After six years, Margarita
asked her doctor what she could do to cut out medication for good.
He referred her to a nutritionist, Nadine, who gave her a pedometer Number of AltaMed

2017, Margarita began attending classes, which included group sessions,

HIV can now be a manageable disease, with the right treatment,
but prevention remains the most effective option. To prevent the
spread of HIV, our team educates our community about Pre-exposure
Prophylaxis (PrEP), which reduces the risk of infection by 92 percent.
The medication itself is currently covered by most health plans, but
continued testing and educational campaigns—the only ways to truly
stop the spread of HIV—are largely community supported and require
ongoing support.

120 people in 2017. But AltaMed is one of a small handful of providers
to offer PrEP in the East Los Angeles region, and there are so many

virally suppressed (undetectable) by the year 2022. This translates to
approximately 55,000 people. We are determined to help the county
hit its goal, and are using our innovative, award-winning educational
video campaigns to normalize the discussion that will eventually
reduce instances of HIV nationwide.
In 2017, you helped us launch Kiki N’ Brunch, a video campaign
designed for black men who have sex with men (MSM). You also
helped us create a third season of our award-winning telenovela, Sin
Vergüenza, as well as Fierce/Ella, a brand-new, bilingual series of shorts
promoting the use of PrEP in transgender women. Beyond educating
