Introduction The world’s ultimate desert rally, the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge returns for its 25th Anniversary edition in 2015 and is once again set to push participants to their physical and mental limits over some of the toughest yet most dramatic scenery the world has to offer. No other rally pits competitors against such demanding terrain – wave after wave of some of the world’s most spectacular sand dunes – yet simultaneously takes in five-star luxury in the form of the stunning hotel that is located right in the middle of the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert and acts as the race’s base, and the dynamic, cutting-edge capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) and of the UAE Motorcycle Club (UAEMC), is the founder and driving force behind the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Now returning for its 25th running for Autos and 20th for Motos, the Desert Challenge is once again being held across the emirate of Abu Dhabi, from the 27th March to 2nd April 2015, with spectators able to enjoy unrivalled access to the action in a number of breath-taking settings. Dedicated, easy-to-access viewing points in the beautiful desert of the Western Region of Al Gharbia will be complemented by the Super Special Stage (SSS) on Yas Island. As in recent years, the race bivouac will again be located adjacent to the magnificent Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. This venue provides a unique contrast between the harshness of endurance rallying and the supreme luxury of the amazing five-star resort, while simultaneously focusing the eyes of the world on Al Gharbia. This year’s rally serves as a round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship, and the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies. Registration is open until mid March 2015 to competitors driving cars and trucks complying with FIA T1, T2, T3 and T4 technical regulations, and motorcyclists and quads running under the auspices of the FIM. The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, and organised by the ATCUAE with the backing of a number of major sponsors. These include the Ruler’s Court in the Western Region, Western Region Municipality, Abu Dhabi Municipality the UAE Army, Abu Dhabi Police, Nissan, Yas Marina Circuit, ADNOC, National Ambulance Service, Abu Dhabi Aviation, Al Ain Water, Abu Dhabi Waste Management, Rotana and Centro Hotels – Yas Island, Qsar Al Sarab Resort, the Tourism Development and Investment Company, TAG Heuer, Explorer and DP World. 5 ©ADDC 2015

Location Maps Sustainability Statement The ATCUAE is committed to sustainable development. We recognise that we have a vital role to play in delivering a better quality of life and environment for everyone in the UAE, both now and for future generations. We are committed to achieving continuous environmental improvement in all our activities and services. We will strive to reduce our own impact and make every effort to promote awareness of local and global issues that will facilitate sustainable development practices. To achieve this we aim to: Promote awareness and a sense of environmental responsibility amongst employees and volunteers, Assess the environmental impact and take steps to continuously improve all significant effects, Comply with applicable laws and legal requirements Use resources more efficiently, thereby reducing consumption, Minimise waste, promote recycling and the use of recycled materials. Purpose This policy applies to all staff and volunteers and other stakeholders. The purpose of this policy is to set out our intentions and principles in relation to sustainable development, promoting sustainable development and good environmental practice. 13 ©ADDC 2015
Principles The ATCUAE will address the social, economic, and environmental considerations of sustainable development, defined as ensuring a better quality of life, according to the following principals: Social progress that recognises the needs of everyone, Effective protection of the environment and the prudent use of natural resources. Sustainable development is about what we do and the way we think. It’s about community empowerment and involvement, volunteering, and giving back to the society that we live in. We recognise the interdependence of individuals and groups with the natural and built environments, which means seeing, and making connections between different aspects of our lives; social, economic, and environmental, and building links between the local and the global, understanding chain reactions, and assessing and sharing resources. We are committed to enabling volunteers to participate in society, feel that they belong and make a difference, build strengths, and enhance skills, and are supportive of volunteers taking responsibility and leadership. The ATCUAE is committed to sustainability, which means understanding a sense of looking forward, not focusing on the present, recognising the limits of knowledge, thinking of consequences, making things last, renewing and recycling, safeguarding resources, and meeting local needs locally wherever possible. Sustainable Communities The ATCUAE is committed to contribute to sustainable community development where people are happy to live and work, meeting the diverse needs of the UAE residents. We contribute by engaging communities in motor sports, developing their skills, knowledge and confidence. Sustainable development is about establishing social relationships of trust, of social capital, and is the core of active community participation and the key to a better quality of life. We operate a network of people with motorsport interests who have the desire to invest their time in running events in, and for, the UAE’s benefit, who train other volunteers, and communicate and share their lives with others. For sustainable development to be meaningful it must start with people making decisions about their lives, taking responsibility, giving back to the society and participating in the community, learning new skills, and recognising the consequences of actions. We have identified the learning and skills development needs of UAE citizens, taking into account the unique demographic, economic and cultural factors of the country, and are implementing the plan to raise the level of involvement. Resource Use The ATCUAE will incorporate materials efficiency measure to reduce running costs. It will minimise resource consumption by: 14 ©ADDC 2015
Reducing the amount of waste we produce by reducing our consumption, Promoting reuse, recycling and proper disposal of goods, Reviewing supplier products, Shifting towards electronic means of communication. Transport The ATCUAE is promoting public and shared transportation as the main means of travel to and from events to reduce traffic generation and its associated environmental impacts. Application All staff, volunteers and other stakeholders have access to this policy and it should be referred to in decision-making and throughout team meetings.
