Mr. Gallagher’s Note Dear Student, as our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate and many happy memories to reflect upon. Your time is finally here, you did it! May I applaud you for your dedication to your development as a young responsible adult, to your education and to your school. You are our future. That said as you read and peruse this wonderful collection and compilation of pictures and memories the fear of the unknown is to the forefront of your thoughts. The unknown about whether you will get the opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments with your parents and family looking on. Fear that those moments you spent with your friends on that last day of school before all schools closed will be the last memories you get to make with those friends. Regret that you did not get the chance to say goodbye and thank you to your peers, teachers and staff members. At times like these always remember the words of Tom Althouse: “This is our time. Seize the moment” “Fear not the unknown. It is a sea of possibilities” Now as you are about to embark on a journey none of us has gone through before please realise you are pioneering a way for us all, stepping into the unknown. Because of the Coronavirus shutdowns, many of you aren’t finishing your schooling in the traditional way. It seems unfair, and it truly is. But please know this, we recognise your efforts and applaud you. We see the hard work you’ve gone through and the time you’ve put in. You pushed through the hard times. So when your children or grandchildren ask you what you did during your teenage years you will be able to tell them “My generation and I were dealt a difficult hand of cards and with them made our lives into something extraordinarily wonderful.” This publication captures your imprint on Cashel Community School over these past five to six years. Sometimes schools are seen as places where students learn, teachers teach and points are produced at the end of a six year process. And yet, of course, an education is so much more. We want you to achieve your full potential academically but we also want to truly educate, so that a graduate student of Cashel Community School is a rounded human being, capable of making the most of what opportunities open up for him or her. Not too long ago society became conscious of the need to be able to deal with change. We were told that our children could expect to have several different types of jobs over a lifetime. The students you will read about in this publication are equipped to deal with change. As Sixth year students you have been a credit to yourselves and your families in the way you have conducted and applied yourselves and for the spirit and enthusiasm you have brought to our school. You contributed a wealth of talent in every aspect of school life during your time with us. So much has been accomplished here during the years both within and outside the classroom. I urge you to continue to make the most of your talents, to always do your best and to realise your full potential. What we sow now, we will harvest later. So my dear students, as you embark on a new chapter of your lives, always remember that learning does not stop inside the classroom. As Henry L. Doherty said, “Be a student as long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life.” Every experience in life will teach you something. You just need to keep an open mind and open heart to see what lessons the world has to offer. I hope you have enjoyed this wonderful production of life for which I am forever humbled. Going forth I wish your health, happiness and success for the future. Mr. Gallagher Page 2
Mr. Nolan’s Note Dear Class of 2020 I hope this Chaplains note for your Yearbook finds you and your families well. As I write these words we are living in the midst of a new reality. I am very mindful that you have been through all sorts of emotions since we last met back in March. Normally we would be in the midst of exam and graduation preparation at this time. However we have embraced a new normal and our school community and society in general has had to adapt in ways we could never have foreseen. It saddens me that we were not afforded an opportunity to say a proper goodbye to you as a Leaving Cert class, however, I look forward to this happening in whatever form in the not too distant future. There have been major changes in how we go about our daily lives; not least of all for you with the new arrangements surrounding the Leaving Cert. I do not want this note to be downbeat or lamenting issues beyond our control as I feel you as a group are about much more than that. We all have to embrace hope. Some things always remain the same and one of these is the impact we have on others. Allow me to be one of many voices who will tell you that you made a very significant impact on everybody in Cashel Community School. For the past year you were the leaders in our school and even before that. You now go to that next phase of your life armed with a resilience and fortitude that is an example to those around you. You are now leaders in education by the way you adjusted to your recent new educational challenges. Cashel Community School will always be a major part of your life and a part, I hope, you look back on with fondness. You will be remembered as a group with vibrancy, energy, integrity and a sense of fun while all the time being focused on what was important. Your contribution spanned every aspect of school life. My wish for you is that you embrace the next phase of your life with an energy that will see you fulfil all your dreams, for that is what life is about. What I would ask of you, if I may, is that you do so with kindness and gentleness. These are true virtues. These are also virtues that I have seen in you each day. Take care of yourselves and each other and Reach Out with Care and Kindness ... it is upon this ROCK that our school community is built. A school community you helped shape and a school community that will miss you. May Love and Laughter light your days and warm your Hearth and Home, May Good and faithful Friends be yours wherever you may Roam. May Peace and Plenty bless your World with a Joy that long endures and May all life’s passing seasons bring THE BEST TO AND YOURS I had the pleasure of starting in Cashel Community School with you on the same day. You will always hold a special place in my heart. Stay Safe and Well, God Bless You Always, Mr. Nolan Chaplain. (May 2020) Page 3
Mr. Galvin Year Head Note Taking over from Mr. Scully are big boots to fill, but when you’re taking over in a role that allows you to facilitate the development of a wonderful group of individuals, it makes the experience so much easier and extremely satisfying, especially now that the fruits of that are evident to all. In October 2018, I took on the role of Year Head to our current Leaving Cert students and their enthusiasm and drive to improve as individuals and as a group was something that amazed me from the beginning and makes me so proud to this day. My mantra from the beginning was to listen to them and their ideas, and as I said above, rather than lead but to ‘facilitate’ their development. Fearless and confident in their own ability, they pioneered the art of presenting to their peers at assemblies and it was the presence of a strong mutual respect for each other that made this practice such a success. The students would prepare and present the material themselves and the other students always listened respectively. This reflected the maturity that was evident in these young adults that were developing in our school They were always full of great ideas and initiatives and never shirked being challenged to come up with ideas themselves, and this was highlighted when a group prepared and shared videos in the art of planning and studying so as to have as a resource for their peers. Their focus was always, how we can improve as an individual but also as a group and the support and care they show for each other is always reflected in their actions Gaisce But aside from these high levels of motivation and focus, it is their friendly, good spirited nature that I will remember and miss Taking part in most. The ‘craic’ at the lockers in the morning, analysing a ch match or aGanew allenges involv isce fashion was a fanttrend astic exbeing set. All the best and mind yourselves, Trevor Galvin - Sixth Year Year Head GAISCE Taking part in Gaisce was a fantastic Sarah Moloney experience for the 25 or so students who took up the challenges involved starting with the Bronze Award in TY. Each of us set ourselves targets to achieve in the 3 areas required. We got involved in our local community giving an hour a week to helping in areas like Tidy Towns, training underage teams, local choir or Guides. Our second challenge involved improving our own fitness and activity levels, again giving a minimum of an hour a week to this.Thirdly we committed to taking on a personal challenge to improve or take up something new. People challenged themselves to learn a musical instrument, master some skills of a new sport or improve their IT skills. The final and extremely enjoyable part of Gaisce was the overnight adventure trip, staying in Ballymacarbry and hiking in the Comeragh Mountains. We were delighted to be presented with our certificates and beautiful medals at the end of year TY ceremony. Thanks to all the teachers who organise Gaisce in the school. A number of us continued on and completed the Silver Challenge in 5th year and who knows some might yet go for the Gold Award and follow in the footsteps of a number past students. Page 4

l l a n d C a m o g i e Footba Meabh E.Ryan It has been a great honour and an absolute pleasure to have played for CCS for the past six years. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every single minute of it, as myself and my team members have experienced first-hand both the highs and lows which are integral parts of sport. The tears of disappointment, heartache and great joy, euphoria even, have been shared among an extraordinary group of girls. The enduring friendships formed and the blissful memories created will surely last a lifetime. Camogie and Ladies’ Football is certainly going from strength to strength in CCS, with exceptional performances which I believe provide master classes in both camogie and football excellence. This is borne out in our winnings of All Ireland, Munster and County titles. Both teams are made up of players from various different clubs but when we represent CCS, we play together as one cohesive and tenacious unit, embracing both our competitiveness and our sense of sportsmanship in equal measure. The titles which we have gained would definitely not have been achieved without the commitment, hard work and dedication of our trainers, to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude. We acknowledge and appreciate that these teachers sacrificed their time to facilitate training sessions at lunchtime, after school and during school holidays. This effort on their part made a huge contribution to our winning of the silverware that has pride of place in our school. On behalf of both teams, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to Mr. Ryan, Ms Gilmore, Ms. O’Neill, Ms. O’Dwyer, Ms Sheehan and Mr Hynes. Both teams wish our upcoming teams all the best in the future. Page 10
Senior Hurling Lorcan Carr The 2019/20 Senior Hurling year began in a hectic manner with many challenge matches organised by Mr. Ryan and Mr. Roche. The campaign did not get off to a great start with a heavy defeat to Doon in their backyard. In hindsight, it seems this defeat was a blessing in disguise as it made the whole panel realise we were well off championship pace. After some strong words from both Mr. Ryan and Mr. Roche the team went back to training in the following weeks with a new sense of focus and determination. When the season eventually kicked off with our first game against Colaiste Chriost Ri, the high intensity training paid off and Criost Ri were routed with a score line of 7-21 to 0-05. As the score line showed, it was a dominant all round performance from both our forwards and defenders. Rice College Ennis, were the next opponents in the round of 16. Played on a treacherous, wet December day, the boys once again fought hard and came up with a sound victory of 1-17 to 0-08. As the Christmas holidays arrived the training did not stop. Training and challenge matches continued right up until the 23rd of December and commenced once again shortly after the New Year began. There was superb commitment from all of the panel over this time and this winter training paid off when on the 8th of January, the team were faced with the very physical, athletic side of Causeway Comprehensive School. Fighting for every ball and resolutely refusing to give in, the whole team had to dig deep in extra time to eventually come out with a victory - partly thanks to the bravery of Paddy Moloney!! In the semi-finals we faced off against St. Augustines of Dungarvan. This was another tight contest with two evenly matched teams. But when it came down to the crunch, the boys once again showed great character and secured a spot in the final against Doon. The day of the Munster Final arrived on the 15th of February. Unfortunately, to the disgust of the players the match was cancelled due to Storm Dennis. It would have been very easy for this to dishearten the boys but to their credit they all responded positively. When the Final eventually arrived on the 22nd of February, we were eager to perform in front of a large crowd. Playing against a strong Doon outfit who had an impressive run to the final, another tight competitive game ensued. Against the wind, against the odds and with a man down the team pulled through in the 2nd half in a dramatic finish achieving a great Munster Final win. A few weeks later, the team faced Connacht Championships Oranmore in the All Ireland Semi-Final. This ended in another convincing victory for Cashel Community School. The All Ireland Final was then fixed for Semple Stadium against Leinster Champions Birr. Unfortunately, this has been postponed indefinitely due to Covid-19. All of the lads are of course extremely eager to play this game no matter how long we have to wait. Huge thanks to Mr Ryan and Mr. Roche and all who brought us on this journey. Page 11

My e x p e r ie n c e in C C S Presentation made on Open Night to 6th class pupils and parents by Jennifer Fogarty Chairperson Students Council Good Evening. It’s hard for me to believe that I am now the sixth year standing up here speaking at the open night. This opportunity has allowed me to think back on my six years here, and I would like to share that with you this evening. The most valuable and precious thing this school has given me is friendship. My class in primary school had just 9 people, and walking in on my first day of first year, I didn’t know how I would remember everyone’s name and if I would ever have enough time to get to know them. But it turns out that 6 years is enough, and I have friends now who are right there in my happiest memories, who motivate me, inspire me and most importantly, make me laugh. And laughter is what I will remember about Cashel when I leave. A lesson that everyone here learns is how to continually strive to better yourself, while also being able to appreciate where you are and make the most of everyday. In Cashel, “making the most of everyday” means enjoying life while also reaching your personal and academic goals. Thanks to my time here I know what it feels like to be part of a community and I know what ‘togetherness’ feels like. There has always been someone somewhere to turn to when I needed help or advice on something. There is always a teacher to tell me why I didn’t do as well as I wanted to. When I deserved a pat on the back, I got one, and whenever I needed to pull up my socks, somebody told me that too. My peers and I eventually found our place here. Everyone discovered their interest, their niche. Our talents have been nurtured and encouraged and we’ve always been pushed to be better students, better sportspeople, better musicians and better citizens. From an academic point of view, I am and have been extremely fortunate to have committed and enthusiastic teachers. They have always found a way to explain something in a way that I personally could understand and were always happy to answer my questions after class. Coming up to exams many of teachers take time to do extra revision with us at lunch time or after school, so I’ve always felt that our teachers take our success personally. They want us to do well just as much as we want to do well ourselves. I also always had every opportunity to maximise my performance here because I could choose the subjects I was good at. I have always had a keen interest in languages and was able to study both French and German for Junior Cert and for my Leaving Cert I could to pursue the two science subjects I wanted. An important part of life here is looking outwards rather than inwards. There always seems to be someone organising something to help others who need it. This has largely shaped how I view my own place in society and I’m sure if I asked my peers, they would agree. The curriculum for subjects like CSPE contained all the information necessary to convince us of how lucky we are to be living in a country with free education and running water, but I believe that it was my teachers who really explained these concepts and their importance that made me realise just how grateful I should be for the endless opportunities at my disposal. I haven’t met anyone here in my 5 and a quarter years who underestimate the hardship faced by so many in our society, and the initiatives and fundraisers that are always happening here are usually taken very seriously. In short, there are a lot of good people here. Playing sports, music and becoming involved in the Student Council all served to grow my confidence and strengthen other, non-academic skills. I never thought I would be confident enough to stand up and talk to a room full of people, but here I am. This school has offered me endless opportunities to help me get on the road I wanted to be on and I feel confident that I’m equipped to deal with the challenges that will soon be thrown at me. Regardless of where all of you end up next September I wish you all a happy six years ahead. Thank you. Page 14
