ORDER OF WORSHIP AS WE GATHER Our Bible Reading of the Day is Matthew 17:1-9. Jesus’ Galilean ministry is quickly drawing to a close. Soon, He will set His face toward Jerusalem and the cross. Jesus leads the inner circle of His disciples—Peter, James, and John—up a high mountain. Tradition locates the transfiguration on Mount Hermon, just north of Caesarea Philippi in Galilee. While praying, Jesus is transfigured before them and is joined by Moses and Elijah. Six days earlier, Peter had confessed Jesus to be “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16), but then rebuked Jesus when He spoke of His Passion. Peter wanted the Christ without the cross, salvation without suffering, glory without Golgotha. Moses, Elijah, and God the Father, however, confirm Jesus’ words foretelling His Passion. Today, Jesus speaks to us in both Scripture and Sacraments; we hear His sweet words of forgiveness and life eternal. WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: LSB 901 Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty 1 Open now thy gates of beauty; Zion, let me enter there, Where my soul in joyful duty Waits for Him who answers prayer. Oh, how blessèd is this place, Filled with solace, light, and grace! 2 Gracious God, I come before Thee; Come Thou also unto me. Where we find Thee and adore Thee, There a heav’n on earth must be. To my heart, O enter Thou; Let it be Thy temple now!
3 Here Thy praise is gladly chanted; Here Thy seed is duly sown. Let my soul, where it is planted, Bring forth precious sheaves alone, So that all I hear may be Fruitful unto life in me. 4 Thou my faith increase and quicken; Let me keep Thy gift divine, Howsoe’er temptations thicken; May Thy Word still o’er me shine As my guiding star through life, As my comfort in all strife. 5 Speak, O God, and I will hear Thee; Let Thy will be done indeed. May I undisturbed draw near Thee While Thou dost Thy people feed. Here of life the fountain flows; Here is balm for all our woes. TIME IN THE WORD Children’s Bible Reading: Page 298 The Reading of the Day: Matthew 17:1-9 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN: LSB 537 Beautiful Savior 1 Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man!
