All is true Fri 22 – Thu 7 Mar
Judi Dench and Ian McKellen offer solid support
in a story of Shakespeare’s home life that tiptoes
between fact and fiction
The year is 1613, Shakespeare is acknowledged as
the greatest writer of the age. But disaster strikes
when his renowned Globe Theatre burns to the
ground, and devastated, Shakespeare returns to
Stratford, where he must face a troubled past and
a neglected family. Haunted by the death of his
only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken
relationships with his wife and daughters. In so
doing, he is ruthlessly forced to examine his own failings as husband and father. His very personal search
for the truth uncovers secrets and lies within a family at war.

Mary Queen of Scots
Fri 1 - Thu 7 Feb and select Shows
“Mary Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life
of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France
at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to
remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland
to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and
England fall under the rule of the compelling
Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her “sister”
in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love,
and female regents in a masculine world, the two
must decide how to play the game of marriage
versus independence. Determined to rule as
much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s
sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change
the course of history.

              On The Basis of Sex
New Release

              Fri 8 – Thu 14 Mar
The film tells an inspiring and spirited true story
that follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg
as she teams with her husband Marty to bring
a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court
of Appeals and overturn a century of gender
discrimination. The feature will premiere in 2018 in
line with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the
Supreme Court. On the Basis of Sex is nowhere near
as groundbreaking as its real-life subject, but her
extraordinary life makes a solid case for itself as an inspirational, well-acted biopic.

initials alone. This film tells her life story, capturing
something of the impact of this impeccably polite
feminist pioneer, she’s been described as a brilliant
lawyer who changed everything for American
women, as well as a witch, and a folk hero for the
generations of women who came after her.
Followed by a discussion over a glass of wine facilitated by local
              lawyer Alison Forsyth

                   Young Picasso
Artist on Screen

                   6.30pm Tue 5 Feb
Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all
time – and right up until his death in 1973 he was
the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt
with these later years – the art, the affairs and the
wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin?
What made Picasso in the first place?
Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years
of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led
to his extraordinary achievements. Three cities
play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young
Picasso visits each and explores their influence on
Picasso, focusing on specific artworks from these
                   early years.

                   Dali – Immortality
                   6pm Sun 17 Feb
The documentary proposes an exhaustive journey
through the life and work of Salvador Dalí, and also
of Gala, his muse and collaborator. It starts in 1929,
a crucial year in Dalí’s career and life, as he joined
the surrealist group and met Gala, and advances until
the year of the artist’s death in 1989. In all this vital
and artistic journey, Dalí’s geographies, especially
Portlligat, stand out as the only stable home-workshop
he possesses; Figueres, his hometown, where he
creates his Dalí Theater-Museum, and Púbol, where
the Castle is, exponent of courtly love, which Dalí
gives to Gala. But naturally other cities, especially
Paris and New York are also central.

Only the kiss of a prince could break the spell. A
resplendent fairytale ballet performed by the
Bolshoi, The Sleeping Beauty features scores of
magical characters including fairies, the Little Red

Don’t miss this revival of Sir Richard Eyre’s
dynamic production. Mezzo-soprano Clémentine
Margaine plays opera’s ultimate seductress, while
Roberto Alagna returns to the role of Don José,
the good-hearted soldier in whom she unleashes
an uncontrollable passion. Don José breaks the
law, goes to prison, deserts the army and loses
everything to be with Carmen. But the capricious
gypsy soon tires of him and takes up instead with the
bullfighter Escamillo—bass Alexander Vinogradov.
She has ruined his life, but still Don José adores her,
with a fierceness that can only lead to catastrophe.
Composer Bizet died just three months after Carmen’s disastrous premiere, never
knowing that his creation would become one of the most popular operas of all time.

Don Quixote
7.15pm Tue 19 Feb
Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa’s much-loved
19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel
de Cervantes’s classic novel and set to Ludwig
Minkus’s score. The ballet has long been acclaimed
for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically
demanding ‘vision scene’ and the famously bravura
and breath-taking Act III pas de deux.
Carlos Acosta’s production was created for The
Royal Ballet in 2013, and brings the sunshine of
Spain and the exuberance of the entire Company
to the stage. Acosta created new choreography
for the gypsy scene in Act II, and uniquely for this
production of Don Quixote added on-stage musicians. Warmth, charm and entertainment
abound in this energetic and witty ballet, reflected too in the characterful backdrops of
Tim Hatley’s vibrant designs.

La Fille du Régiment
5.55pm Sat 2 Mar
Full of wit and invention, Donizetti’s comic opera is
a delight. The famous aria “Ah, Mes Amis,” with its
nine high Cs, is one of opera’s most show-stopping
numbers. Bel canto stars Pretty Yende and Javier
Camarena take on the challenging vocal fireworks
in Laurent Pelly’s hilarious staging. Orphaned as a
small child and raised by an entire army regiment,
the spirited Marie has grown up as the regiment’s
‘daughter’, raising morale and spreading joy. Tonio,
a local man, falls in love with her and even joins the
army for her sake. But a chance encounter with a
noblewoman sparks a sudden revelation, and a tale
unfolds of secret identities, long-lost family, and murky pasts.

Gentle in nature, this is a story of authentic
adventure and relationship between son and father.
The passing of time and changing relationships we
have with our parents and children is fundamental
to the human experience. So often in modern
life, we make no time to simply experience this,
plans are put off, excuses are made, opportunities
passed. This film is the antithesis of this lament,
inspiring audiences to take action, to seize the
opportunity to make time for the important
relationships in their life, to embrace the unknown, and to strike out on their own adventures.
