IT’S COMING! SB 1383 Implementation Statewide Residential and Commercial Organics Recycling Collection Edible Food Recovery Food Waste Curbside Collection Effective January 1, 2022, California’s SB 1383 Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Reduction Act requires the state to reduce organic waste (food waste, green waste) disposal by 75% by 2025 — more than 20 million tons annually. What does that mean for the County of Santa Cruz? Property Managers of Multi-family dwellings (5 or more units) will have the responsibility of setting up “organics collection” with GreenWaste Recovery, and to educate your residents about separating their food and organics. Fines and enforcement are conditions of this law. Contact zerowaste@santacruzcounty.us for more information or for any assistance. New Rules on Treated Wood Waste (TWW) Variance is no longer required • All deliveries by business and commercial generators, handlers, and transporters must be accompanied by a completed TREATED WOOD WASTE DISPOSAL FORM that can be printed from our website dpw.co.santa-cruz.ca.us • Residents may be required to provide name, address and phone number, and unload their TWW by hand into bin. No weight limit at the Buena Vista Landfill but there is a 500 lb./day limit at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station. • TWW must be separated from other materials in your load or the load may be rejected. • TWW acceptance is subject to change at any time. Check online before coming to locations. Zero Waste News | Winter 2022 Page 2

AB 827- Customer Access to Recycling Assembly Bill 827 is a state law that requires businesses to provide customers with a recyclable cart and/or organics cart that is visible, easily accessible, adjacent to container for trash (except in restrooms), and clearly marked with educational signage. Help businesses by looking for these containers and properly sorting your materials. THE BIG CHILL Fix or Replace Your Refrigerator-Freezer? Appliances may be built to break these days! Do you insure or not? Do you buy a new fridge or is repairing more cost-effective? Can you fix it yourself or is this something for the pros to handle? How do you find a trustworthy repairperson? If you're a do-it-yourselfer, check IFIXIT.com and YouTube for information to fix and maintain. If the job is beyond your skill-set or toolset, check online or ask friends for referrals to a repairperson. What about the old one? Ask if the delivery of your new unit includes taking away the old one for you. Refrigerators are recyclable, but there is usually a fee to dispose of items containing a refrigerant such as Freon. Once at a landfill, the Freon is safely removed to prevent releasing into the air, and metal components are recycled. If delivery does not include removal of the old one, then call GreenWaste Recovery to see what options are available for disposal. Stay Connected with the MY SANTA CRUZ COUNTY APP Santa Cruz County residents can report potholes, trash, illegal dumping, sewer spills, street signs down and environmental health complaints to local officials and track the progress. The app also enables residents to vote, pay property taxes, explore our parks and schedule building inspections. https://sccappstore.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/ WHAT DO WE MEAN BY “RECYCLING CONTAMINATION?” Contaminated recyclables is when non-recyclable items are placed in recycling cart When this occurs, there is risk of the full truckload being contaminated, causing the truck to head to the landfill instead of the recycling facility. Bottles with liquids or saturated items will destroy cardboard and paper items in recycle cart and in the recycle truck. Your blue recycle cart is considered a mixed recycling system where residents can mix all hauler allowable recycling in one curbside cart which is sorted at the GreenWaste Recovery Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in San Jose. We prefer recyclable materials to be loose (not bagged) in the bin to make it easier for machine sorting. Remember: Clean Dry Empty How to avoid contamination: • Consult your GreenWaste Recovery Recycle Guide for the County of Santa Cruz to be sure items can be recycled https://www.greenwaste.com/wp- content/uploads/SC-MFD-all4.pdf • Empty, clean (scrape with a spatula or rinse) and dry your containers before placing in the bin • Remove food and greasy parts before placing in recycle cart • Soft paper products such as paper towels, receipts, and tissues belong in the trash • No Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) items or batteries are allowed in the recycling or trash bin. Contact your Property Manager to arrange pickup for these items • Do not throw textiles, bedding, or clothing in the blue recycling bin; please donate • ONLY small Electronic Waste is allowed in the recycling bin: keyboards, cameras, small appliances • NOT ALLOWED: TVs, air conditioners, computer monitors, towers, microwaves or refrigerators.
