Blood Donating
More people may be eligible to donate blood or
platelets from now in Wales since World Blood
Donor Day which was on Monday 14th June, following changes to the
eligibility questions asked.
All donors, regardless of gender, will now be asked a new set of
questions about sexual behaviours, focused mainly on the last three
months, meaning that more people from LGBTQ+ communities will be
eligible to donate.
The change has been introduced following recommendations made by
the FAIR (For the Assessment of Individualised Risk) steering
group, which is a UK wide collaboration including representatives
from all UK blood services, medical and scientific experts, LGBTQ+
groups, as well as a selection of patients and donors.
Married couple Carl and Martin from Newbridge are now eligible to
donate following the criteria change.
Carl, a Quality Manager, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be booked
in to donate under these changes. I’m grateful for the efforts of
campaigners, academics and clinicians who have made this happen. It
is only fair in today’s society that everyone’s behaviours should be
treated the same and not by the gender of their partner”.
Sales Manager Martin, added: “Today is a very special day for Carl
and me. Together we can now make potentially lifesaving donations to
help patients in need. My father had numerous blood transfusions
and I am forever grateful to those donors for their support. My
niece also received many blood transfusions during her treatment
for leukaemia. She is now thankfully in full remission and I am
absolutely delighted to potentially help someone like her recover
from such a serious illness.”
Shane Andrews MBE, also booked to donate for the first time on
Monday, 14th June.
Shane said: “As Chair of Archway (Network Rail’s LGBT+ employee
network), I have been heavily involved in improving diversity and
inclusivity in the rail industry and I am delighted I am now part of
these changes introduced today.
“Today is my first donation but it definitely won’t be my last. I
intend to donate regularly now and feel honoured to commence my
lifesaving journey on World Blood Donor Day but also during Pride
month.”
Around 350 blood donations are needed each day by the Welsh
Blood Service to maintain a steady supply of vital blood and blood
components to 20 hospitals across the country.
Welsh Blood Service Director, Alan Prosser said: “We are thrilled to
mark World Blood Donor Day by welcoming more people into our
lifesaving team of blood and platelet donors.
“From today, more people can safely donate thanks to a new and
fairer eligibility criteria.
“Whilst blood services are not responsible for setting the rules
around donation, we are delighted that our work in collaboration with
the FAIR steering group has led to the new regulations.
“If you have never given blood before, please consider supporting us
by donating at your local donation clinic.”
Head of Nursing at Welsh Blood Service, Zoe Gibson said: “Patient
safety is at the heart of everything we do. All donations are tested
for significant infections before they are sent to hospitals to
maintain the safety of the blood supply chain.
“All donors will now be asked about recent sexual behaviours which
might have increased their risk of acquiring an infection. This means
that some donors might not be eligible on the day but may be eligible
to donate in the future.
“Our priority is to make sure that donors can answer the pre-
donation questions in a setting that makes them feel comfortable
and safe. Our staff have been trained to make sure these more
personal conversations are conducted with care and sensitivity and
that accurate information is captured.
“We are asking that donors consider these new questions alongside
existing health and travel questions when they book an appointment
so that if they don’t meet the new criteria, they can re-schedule for
a later date.

WREXHAM TRADING STANDARDS ISSUE WARNING
ON COPYCAT WEBSITES THAT CHARGE A FEE
Wrexham Trading Standards is warning the public to be careful
when applying for services online as it can be easy to get misled by
‘copycat’ websites that charge extra, unnecessary costs. Examples
where this can happen include applying for or renewing driving
licences, passports, European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC), US -
Entry Permits, driving tests and child benefit.
Although official websites will sometimes require a fee for making
an application, there are a number of third party websites that will
charge an additional fee to accept the application, and simply pass it
on to the issuing authority.
“You may not even realise you’re being misled”
Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for People – Communities,
Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, said:
“These websites will often look very similar to the official
websites, so you may not even realise you’re being misled. They
usually have a disclaimer and a link to the official site, but this
may be in small print that can easily be missed. Often members
of the public only find out they have used one of these copycat
websites when it’s too late and they have paid the extra fee.
Take your time to make sure you’re using the official site to
avoid paying out any unnecessary costs.”
Advice from Trading Standards is to be extra
careful if doing a general search through a search engine as this is
far more likely to result in third party websites being listed in the
results.
Check what the official web address is for the service you’re looking
for, and type that in instead, taking some time to double check the
website you open to make sure it’s the official version and that the
fee is what you were expecting.

“111” LAUNCHED IN NORTH WALES
                 ON TUESDAY 22 JUNE 2021
Patients in North Wales are now able to call 111
for free access to urgent out-of-hours medical
care and round-the-clock health support and
guidance from Tuesday 22nd June 2021
Health advice and information can also be
found on the NHS 111 Wales website, which includes online symptom
checkers for common complaints and conditions.
The easy-to-remember number is free to call from landlines and
mobiles and provides access to both GP Out of Hours services and
health advice from NHS Wales. It will help patients get the right
information, guidance and treatment in the right place at the right
time.
North Wales is the latest area of the country to roll out the
clinically-led national service.
Callers can receive health advice over the phone, be invited to
attend a Minor Injury Unit or arrange an urgent assessment by an
out of hours GP or nurse practitioner depending on their symptoms.
Dr Chris Stockport, Executive Director of Primary and Community
Services at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said:
“The introduction of NHS 111 Wales in our area will help people
across North Wales get the healthcare support they need free of
call charges and in a way which suits them – and will also deliver real
benefits for patients and for the health service.
“After the launch, callers to the simple and memorable 111 number
will receive expert advice and guidance at any time. They will be fully
assessed and if they need to be seen by a doctor or another
healthcare professional out of hours while their own GP practice is
closed, this will be arranged.
“Patients now have a really easy way to access healthcare
information and urgent care advice 24/7. We hope this will help
people get the right information, guidance and treatment in the
right place at the right time.”
In an emergency, patients should attend one of our emergency
departments or dial 999 for an ambulance.
Richard Bowen, Programme Director for 111 NHS Wales said:
“Accessing urgent care services can be really quite confusing if
you’re a member of the public – it can be difficult to know which
services are available and when, and which healthcare professional
or service is best placed to meet your needs.
“NHS Wales want to make that simpler for patients, so from June
22nd, people living in the Betsi Cadwaladr area will now only need to
call one number – 111 for a range of health care advice and support.
“In a time of huge pressure on the health service, it’s fantastic to
be able to work with health professionals including nurses, GPs,
pharmacists and paramedics to ensure our patients get the help they
need as effectively and efficiently as possible.”
NHS 111 Wales is staffed by a large team of nurses, medics and
pharmacists, plus dozens of highly-trained new call handlers. The
service is operated by the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust
from bases across Wales, including a large centre in St Asaph.
                         ******************************

Health Minister, Eluned Morgan, has welcomed the roll-out of
the 111 health advice service to North Wales.
People in North Wales will be able to dial 111 to get non-urgent
medical advice and access to their out of hours service.
111 is a free treatment and advice service, managed by a team of
professionals, who will quickly help users get the right treatment at
the right time and in the right place. The service is available 24
hours a day, seven days a week. Advice is also available online
at www.111.wales.nhs.uk.
The service has now been rolled out to all health board areas of
Wales, except Cardiff and Vale, which is expected to come online
later this financial year.
Residents of Cardiff and Vale the Glamorgan can currently get
advice over the phone, by calling the ‘CAV 24/7’ urgent care line on
0300 10 20 247.
Eluned Morgan said: “I am delighted the free 111 number will now be
available across North Wales and the whole of Wales will be covered
by April 2022.
“The 111 service will support people to receive the most appropriate
services for their needs, and reduce the pressure on our 999
service. When the NHS is experiencing high demand the service is
particularly useful in ensuring people are directed to the most
appropriate services.
“Supported by the 111 website, this easy to remember free phone
service will make it easier for anyone to access the support they
need.” ENDS

Digital NHS COVID Pass available in Wales
                       for urgent travel
People living in Wales who have received the Covid vaccine will
be able to access their vaccination status via the internet from
today [25 June] to generate an NHS COVID Pass for urgent
outbound international travel.
Vaccine certificates have been available in Wales since May for
those who need to urgently travel internationally and provide proof
of their vaccination status, with certificates being sent in the
post. The paper certificates will continue to be issued only for
people who are unable to access the digital Pass. Access to the NHS
COVID Pass in Wales means that proof of vaccination will be
available for people to show on their phone, tablet or laptop.
Covid vaccination status is available if you:
   • Have had the COVID-19 vaccine
   • Were vaccinated in Wales
   • Are aged 16 or over
The digital pass will show if you have been vaccinated against Covid,
although you will still need to check entry requirements for the
country you intend to visit such as number of vaccination doses,
testing and isolation, and will still need to follow travel rules such as
pre-departure testing.
Your Covid vaccination status can be viewed online on the NHS
COVID Pass website, where you can either download or print it as a
PDF document. This is the only valid digital vaccination status
available; any alternative services claiming to offer proof of vaccine
status for a fee are not legitimate.
 Health Minister Eluned Morgan said:
"I’m pleased that people in Wales can now access their vaccination
status via the NHS COVID Pass if they need to travel urgently and
have completed their vaccine course.
“It’s important to remember that the Welsh Government advice on
travel hasn’t changed, and people should only consider international
travel if absolutely essential.”
People in Wales can now access their vaccination status on their
phone, tablet or laptop using the digital NHS COVID Pass. Work is
ongoing to integrate England’s NHS App and NHS Wales systems to
allow people in Wales to use it.
People can request a bilingual NHS COVID Pass letter by calling
0300 303 5667. ENDS

                              LINE IMPROVEMENTS
A recent bid for £30 million to the UK
                             Government’s Levelling Up Fund could
see long awaited improvements to the
Wrexham to Bidston Line taking passengers to and from the North
West of England.
Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport,
said: “The rail network serves the needs of local businesses, people
and communities. We as a Council have long campaigned and lobbied
for improvements to this line which supports our Future of Rail
document agreed at the councils Executive Board.
“Our aim is to see a 30 minute service along this route along with
other routes which could now be closer than ever, hopefully in the
December timetable. We will continue to our pursue all our Rail
aspirations to support better integration between bus and rail and
reduce the carbon footprint.”
Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council and Chair of the Mersey
Dee Alliance, said, “I welcome this funding bid which will see good
connectivity to the rail network and frequent services to key local,
regional and national destinations. All are essential to help stimulate
and drive economic growth in Wrexham and the surrounding areas.
“It is essential that we work together across the Mersey Dee
Alliance to help support and drive the economy in Wrexham.”
This is the third bid to the Levelling Up Fund that has been made to
the UK government with the economic prosperity of Wrexham at its
heart.
Executive Board last week approved two bids to the fund for
improvements to the Racecourse and at the World Heritage site at
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

      Ministers Praise Wrexham-based
     Wockhardt on Covid vaccine success
Welsh Government Ministers visited Wrexham-based Wockhardt
today to praise the workforce’s crucial role in manufacturing the
Astra Zeneca vaccine, which is playing a major part in Wales’s
highly successful Covid vaccine programme.

Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, who has Cabinet-level
responsibility for science in the Welsh Government, joined Minister
for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd, Lesley Griffiths,
on a visit to the Wrexham site to see the vaccine being
manufactured first-hand.
Wockhardt is manufacturing the Astra Zeneca vaccine for use
across the UK.
The company currently employs around 500 staff in Wrexham. It is
the fourth largest generic pharmaceutical company in the UK and
Ireland.
Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said: “It’s great to be in
Wrexham today to see this truly life-saving vaccine being
manufactured here in Wales. I’m particularly pleased to have the
opportunity to personally thank the company and its committed
workforce for the vital role they’re playing in supporting the rollout
of the vaccine across Wales and the rest of the UK. This really is a
fantastic contribution to tackling this once-in-a-generation
pandemic.
“The Welsh Government is committed to supporting the Life
Sciences sector in Wales to grow. Wockhardt’s continued presence
here will play a crucial role in helping us realise our ambition.”
Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd, Lesley
Griffiths, said:
“I’m immensely proud the Astra Zeneca vaccine is being
manufactured right here in North Wales. When the call came,
Wockhardt and its workforce stepped up to help.
“I’m pleased to see a leading global company like Wockhardt based
here in North Wales and playing a key role in helping protect and
save lives during the pandemic.” ENDS

             MOBILE TESTING OPEN
        AT WREXHAM INDUSTRIAL ESTATE
A mobile testing unit will open on Wrexham
Industrial Estate to make it easier for
people working there to get a Covid-19 test.
The move is part of ongoing work to help
keep virus cases low in Wrexham.
The easy-access testing facility will be
offering rapid lateral flow tests at the Redwither Business
Park, every Monday starting from June 7.
The facility is based in the overflow carpark adjacent to the staff
car park, and will be open between 8am and 4pm on June 7, and
between 12pm and 8pm on June 14. After that, the opening times will
be reviewed.
Staff working on the industrial estate who don’t have symptoms are
being encouraged to get tested at the unit (anyone who does have
symptoms should self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test).
About one in three people with coronavirus don’t have symptoms, but
can still infect others, and getting tested regularly is the only way
to know if you have the virus.
If people test positive and self-isolate, it helps stop the virus
spreading.
The work is being co-ordinated by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health
Board, Wrexham Council and Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust.
Quick and convenient
Councillor Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Public
Protection, said: “This is good news and will provide a quick and
convenient way for people working on the industrial estate to get a
test.
“Many people who work on the estate haven’t been able to work from
home during the pandemic and have to travel into their workplace
every day. So knowing they can easily get a test will hopefully
provide them – and their employers – with more peace of mind, and
help prevent transmission of the virus.
“It’s important to note that this is a positive and pro-active step.
The figures remain very good in Wrexham, with a very low number of
cases, and this is just another way to help us keep on top of things
and keep cases down.”
Teresa Owen, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s Executive
Director of Public Health, added: “We are pleased to be working
with Wrexham Council to offer workers in this area of Wrexham
access to a rapid test at our temporary WAST Mobile Testing Unit.
“This will ensure that workers in this area can access testing closer
to where they work…avoiding concerns associated with travelling to
get a test. Workers will become more confident and skilled at self-
testing which will provide reassurance in workplaces.
“The number of cases of Covid-19 has fallen, although it is still
circulating within our communities and it’s important that we still
test to identify individuals who are showing no symptoms and are
unaware they may be infecting others.
“Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 must self-isolate
immediately and book a test.”
If you can’t work from home, you can also order rapid lateral flow
test kits to be sent to your home via the Welsh Government
website.
Or you can collect them in person from local collection points.
If your test is positive, you should book a PCR test within 24 hours
of the positive lateral flow test result.

Welsh Government extends measures to protect
businesses from eviction until end of September
2021
Businesses affected by the Coronavirus pandemic will now be
protected from eviction until the end of September 2021,
Economy Minister Vaughan Gething has announced.
As part of interventions the Welsh Government is making to
support businesses, the moratorium against forfeiture for the
non-payment of rent will now be extended until September 30,
2021. It was originally due to end on June 30, 2021.

This measure will ensure businesses will not forfeit their business
tenancies for non-payment of rent until 30 September this year, but
businesses should continue to pay rent wherever possible, and it is in
the interests of both landlords and tenants to reach negotiated
agreements on any arrears.
The move will help a range of sectors including retail, hospitality,
leisure and tourism at what continues to be an incredibly challenging
trading period, whilst Coronavirus restrictions ease.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Welsh Government has
ensured that more than £2.5billion has reached businesses across
Wales with more money reaching firms every day. The Welsh
Government’s package of business support is in addition to that
available from the UK Government and is one of the most generous in
the UK. In addition, unlike in England, Welsh Ministers have ensured
the 100% rates relief scheme for retail, hospitality and leisure
businesses will run for the full 12 months of this financial year. This
measure is backed by £380 million to help provide breathing space
for around 70,000 businesses this year.”

Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said:
“The coronavirus pandemic has been a harrowing experience for us
all, not least for businesses and their employees across Wales.
We’ve pulled every lever possible to support them during this
incredibly challenging time.
“We’re committed to doing all we can do secure jobs and livelihoods.
That’s why I’m today announcing a further extension of measures to
prevent forfeiture for the non-payment of rent, which will protect
businesses from eviction.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve committed more than
£2.5bn to businesses across Wales, in addition to our business as
usual support through Business Wales. Businesses in the hardest hit
sectors also continue to benefit from a full 12 month business rates
holiday package.
“Combined, these measures have helped protect thousands of firms
and safeguard many more jobs. It’s a key part of our plans to kick-
start a strong Welsh recovery post-pandemic.
“We remain committed to backing Welsh firms.”
The UK Government recently announced how it intends deal with the
issue of commercial rent arrears built up during the pandemic.
The Welsh Government will consider the matter further for Wales
in the months ahead.

The realisation of a Football Museum for Wales here in
Wrexham has come a step closer with the appointment
                   of the design team.
Haley Sharp Design (hsd), together with architects Purcell and
quantity surveyors MDA Consulting, will work with Wrexham Council
and the Welsh Government to develop the designs of the new
museum before construction begins in 2022.
Meet the team

David Donoghue, Creative Director at hsd commented: “We are
proud to be working with Wrexham Council, the Welsh Government
and communities across Wales to develop a new, dynamic museum
experience to enable everyone to actively engage with their
heritage. We can’t wait to start exploring the rich stories and
collections, and to create impactful and exciting proposals.”

project for Wales and Wrexham.”
‘Real progress being made’
The new Football Museum will be based within the Wrexham Museum
building on Regent Street in the town centre.
Major refurbishment work will be carried out so that both the
Football Museum and Wrexham Museum can exist side by side.
Over the next few months, the team will work with the public and
stakeholders to develop the design of the new museum, together
with its visitor facilities and public programmes. As well as the new
football museum, the Wrexham Museum displays will also be
refreshed and enlarged as part of the project.
New Welsh Government Deputy Minister responsible for Arts and
Sport Dawn Bowden said, “I am delighted to see that real progress
is now being made in moving this very significant project for
Wrexham and Northeast Wales forward and I look forward to
working with Wrexham Council to bring this exciting development to
completion.”
A major new attraction for Wrexham town centre’
Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for People – Communities,
Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh
Jones said: “The new Football Museum will be a major new attraction
for Wrexham town centre, drawing visitors from all over the country
and beyond. It will tell the story of football in Wales in all its
diversity, from the clubs and supporters across the country, all the
way up to the national teams and their historic achievements.
“We are delighted to welcome Haley Sharp Design and look forward
to seeing this exciting project progressing as we move towards the
next stage of its development.”
Wrexham Council’s Chief Executive, Ian Bancroft, said: “The
appointment of such a strong world class design team reflects the
commitment both of the Council and the Welsh Government to
create a museum which will recognise the importance of football in
Wales and secure Wrexham’s place as the spiritual home of football
in Wales.
“This significant step forward for the project comes at a hugely
exciting time for football fans here in Wrexham and across Wales.
We congratulate the national team for their fantastic achievements
this summer and for adding another thrilling chapter to Welsh

The following message was sent out on facebook last year as
the shock and power of the virus began to dawn on us all.
(sadly I missed reading it then):
“To all our customers and friends.
During this very difficult time for everyone with the Coronavirus
pandemic, we - Jets Transfers - would like to try and help our
community to survive this crisis.

If anyone needs any help with deliveries we are available to help
whether it be just voluntarily collecting prescriptions or shopping.
We are well known in Ruabon and are completely trustworthy
and, I am sure, the members of Friends of Ruabon would be
willing to vouch for us.
Stay safe and look after yourselves.
Julian and Annette.”
Julian’s Executive Transfer Services
J.E.T.S - Transfers.”
Annette and Julian
(Unfortunately I missed out on reading about this promise).
Since this advert, both Annette and Julian have suffered severe
personal losses, but luckily, have heaps of friends supporting them
through their personal crises.

As lockdown eases we all know that J.E.T.S Transfers will, once again
be hot on the list for those needing its reliable and courteous
services. (Personally I wouldn’t use any other service, for my family
visits from Australia). Sybil Bremner.
