YOUR JOINING INSTRUCTIONS
Welcome to Buckinghamshire New University! We are looking forward to you joining our BA (Hons) Hair and Make-Up for Film and Performance course in September. At BNU we pride ourselves on the support we offer our students to succeed in their academic learning and creating graduates ready for employment. This information pack has been created by the BNU Welcome Team and your course leader, Emma Croombs, to provide you with information that you will need for a successful start at BNU. Please read it carefully before you join us. THE ESSENTIALS… YOUR WELCOME WEEK AT BNU Your Welcome Week will run from Monday 19th September to Friday 23rd September 2022 at our High Wycombe Campus and you will be provided with a full Welcome Week timetable in the coming weeks. All the information you need will be on the Welcome Page on our website so please check that regularly. ABOUT YOUR COURSE The course BA (Hons) Hair and Make-up for Film and Performance is designed to develop the skills and professional protocols required for entry into the media and performance hair and make-up industries. The course is approximately 70% practical with theoretical research and professional standards and protocols underpinning all areas of study. The lecturing team are all from various areas within the industry with relevant and up to date knowledge to share with our students.
Modules are designed to reflect industry requirements regarding conceptualisation, timings, health and safety, technical skills and promotion. Trips and visiting industry specialists are organised to enhance your studies and work experience and collaborations are actively encouraged and supported. As well as meeting the team at High Wycombe during Welcome week for induction activities, we will also be expecting you to travel to Pinewood studios on the Friday for an approximate 10am start. This is to enable you to get your individual Pinewood passes and be orientated with the facilities at Pinewood in preparation for starting your studies the following week. Conformation and timings for this will be included later in your Welcome Week timetable. On this visit you will need to organise your own travel to Pinewood, via the Students’ Union bus and the Pinewood shuttle bus. The SU bus leaves from the bus stop by the University on Queen Alexandra Rd and travels to our Uxbridge campus. From here it is a 10-minute walk to Uxbridge station where you can access the Pinewood Shuttle bus which drops you just outside the studio. On arrival at Pinewood, please walk to reception where we will be waiting to greet you. The timetables for the individual buses are below. You will be able to access the SU bus with your university pass and for the first time to enable access to the Pinewood shuttle we will issue a letter. After this your Pinewood pass will give you access. Please see the attached links below. As a team we have developed this kit to facilitate your studies and as a good starting point when entering the industry. Some students will already have related products and you can exclude these from our kit list, however every student is required to have all the items listed or an equivalent, so please make sure you have all the items listed towards the end of this document. ENROLMENT UK Students You need to enrol online with BNU before you join us. You will receive an email giving you all the information you need, so don’t worry. More information can be found on our website and we have included a handy checklist to make sure you cover everything.
International Students
You need to pre-enrol online and show proof of ID in-person to complete your enrolment process. Please see our
website for full details.
ID / Qualifications Check
You will be required to show proof of ID when you start with us. This can be:
• Current passport
• EU / EEA National Identity Card
• Birth / Adoption certificate
You will also require proof of your qualifications. Please make sure you have these documents available prior to
joining us.
Photograph
You will need to email us a head and shoulders photograph of yourself before you start at BNU. This photo should
be in a JPEG format and sent to students@bucks.ac.uk with the subject line “Student ID.” Please include the
following information in your email:
• Your student ID (if you know it)
• Your full name (include all forenames and surname)
• Your date of birth
• The name of the course you will be starting
YOUR TEACHING TIMETABLE
Your teaching timetable for your first semester will be available closer to your starting date via MyBNU.
IT SERVICES
When you receive your enrolment email it will include all the information you need to access the digital services at
BNU, including setting up your IT account and accessing MyBNU to access all university systems and

ACCOMMODATION
We guarantee accommodation for all new students at BNU who have applied by 31st August 2022 so if you need
accommodation check out our website. If you have already applied for accommodation, moving in information will
be sent out at the end of August.

Summer Project
In order to prepare you for your upcoming course we would like you complete the following task over the summer
and bring your work with you during the Welcome week visit to Pinewood Studios. Please be prepared to share
your work with the rest of the group.
We would like you to produce a sketch book project based on the following brief:
This project is designed to introduce you to theories, research, critical investigation, and study.
Pick a minimum of 2 examples of films or television productions that derive from the same story base, (fact based or
fictional). These may be set in different eras of time from the original story setting and can include all forms such as
musicals, comedies or dramas.
For example:
• Romeo and Juliet
• Dracula
• Elizabeth 1st
• Snow white
Discuss in which era each production has been set. Why do you think the director has made this choice? Is the
make-up and hair accurate for the era it’s portraying or do you think other factors are in play?
Areas to consider:
• Historical accuracy: Research the era each production has been set in. Has this been accurately portrayed?
• Is it fact or fantasy?
• When was the production filmed? Has this affected the design?
• What audience range is the production aimed at?
• What type of production is it (musical, comedy, etc) and do you think this has affected design decisions?
• Who was the Hair and Make-up designer and director for each production?
• Compare each version. Which do you prefer and why?
Consider all elements and present your findings in an A4 sketch book, include illustrations/mood boards to support your research. Be critical and analytical when discussing each production. Use the key links reading list as a starting point for your research. We look forward to seeing these in Welcome Week. .

You may need to sign up / apply for cards, for example, MAC offer 10% student discount on UNIDAYS and offer a 15% discount card for individuals studying make-up. You will also need something to store your kit in (if you don’t have something already) which is practical and easy to transport to and from university. You won’t be required to bring in everything at once, so set bags and pull along make-up cases are practical and easy to carry to lessons. We will be able to offer some recommendations. Clear plastic make-up bags are also useful for organisation and can be purchased from Boots and Primark. We have included a set bag with a good discount code in the optional section.
