FOA-Get-Involved-2019.qxp_Layout 1 09/01/2019 11:50 Page 2 At Friends of ANCHOR, we never fail to be inspired by those around us fundraising and supporting the charity in any way they can. They are the lifeblood of the charity and make this job the privilege that it is. At the heart of Friends of ANCHOR is that sense of community; that we’re all in this together. So many united for a cause that is so personal and for the majority, has affected a loved one close to us. Working in a small fundraising team of four, we feel in some way connected to everyone who chooses to support the charity. Through your involvement in Friends of ANCHOR, we hope you can really grasp that you are a part of something special. The pages that follow are filled with countless ideas for how you can get involved. Hopefully you’ll have a flash of inspiration as you find something you love doing, choose to donate monthly or take a big leap to push your limits and sign up for a challenge in aid of a cause we all feel so passionate about. We’re looking forward to having you with us on the journey. Sarah-Jane Hogg, Fundraising and Development Director Ready to get involved? No costs deducted for the fundraising team salaries. Nor for any administration costs. Neither is there a percentage taken from your donation for the running costs involved in operating the fundraising office. Since the charity was founded in 1997, every penny of these running and administration costs have been fully covered by Balmoral Group. FOA-Get-Involved-2019.qxp_Layout 1 09/01/2019 11:50 Page 4 DO WHAT YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU LOVE We recognise that not everyone wants to run an ultra marathon in 40 degree heat or swim the channel in a Speedo. If you’d like to do your bit without breaking a sweat, we have some great ideas for you. If you choose something you love and feel confident doing, you’ll enjoy your fundraising journey even more! Fiona Russell Fiona and her partner Lucy throw a huge annual fundraiser every year, with smaller events across the calendar to keep their keen supporters engaged. “I’ve been a patient in the ANCHOR Unit for 16 years and the progress that’s been made in cancer care and support in that time is tremendous. When you’re in the ward, you really see the difference that Friends of ANCHOR makes, and I wanted to put something back in. We’ve been fundraising for years and we’re so happy to have raised well over £30,000 since we began. Each year we try to top the amount we raised the year before, and we’re always amazed by the support we get. For anyone who’s thinking about taking on a fundraising event, my advice would be to get a team of people around you who are happy to help, and then you’re onto a winner. Spread the word about what you’re doing, what it’s for, and you will find that people really get behind you.”

FOA-Get-Involved-2019.qxp_Layout 1 09/01/2019 11:50 Page 6 Robin Parkinson Robin completed the NC500 (and a few extra miles!) on his motorbike, in a mere 24 hours. As if that challenge wasn’t great enough, Robin then took on the coast of Britain, covering a mammoth 3,154 miles. “Cancer has affected me a lot through my life; I lost my mum to cancer and my best man had bowel cancer. Friends of ANCHOR has done a lot to improve quality of care for many people close to me. When it comes to fundraising, I like to challenge myself; I get a lot out of challenges that I think are improbable. But the great thing about fundraising is that you can help by doing anything - it doesn’t have to be off the wall or a huge venture that costs lots of money. It can be something you love, or something small – it will all add up to make a big difference. If you challenge yourself in a way that you’re comfortable with but set yourself a goal, people will get behind you. To those who want to fundraise, there are really only three words: Go for it! Don’t be shy, be creative, publicise it, put it on social media, and people will support you.” Christine Cairns Christine Cairns creates beautiful decoupage artworks as Chic by Christine Cairns, and sells or raffles them on her Facebook page, with all proceeds to Friends of ANCHOR. “The care and dedication that Friends of ANCHOR brings for patients is amazing. My husband Gordon has been in the ANCHOR Unit fortnightly, since 2017, and is always very well looked after. We wanted to show the gratitude we have for them; how thankful we are that they go the extra mile, which really makes a big difference to people when they’re in a vulnerable position. It’s nice to be able to try to turn a negative into a positive. For me, that’s what fundraising does – all the kind messages I get about the pieces I make, the money we’ve managed to raise, they’re uplifting. For Gordon, it takes his mind off things and he likes to get involved. For people who want to do something different, turning a hobby into a way of giving back has been really rewarding for both of us – you just have to find the thing that’s for you.”
FOA-Get-Involved-2019.qxp_Layout 1 09/01/2019 11:50 Page 7 Rachael Murison – 6-time Kiltwalker “I went to many chemo sessions with my mum Linda when she was a patient in the Unit. Being on the ward with her, I could see so clearly the difference Friends of ANCHOR makes. The care that is given, the time and effort, right down to the very small things. These little touches made a big difference to my mum’s time before we lost her. “My life has changed considerably since mum died; I’ve made huge changes to my lifestyle and started my fundraising journey, which I love. I just wish she were here to see it all. To anyone who is thinking about making a positive change, I would say make that change, do what you want to do while you can, and while you can share it with your loved ones. “My dad and son have both joined me on Kiltwalks. A couple of years ago, my dad would never have thought he’d be walking all those miles. For us, it’s a journey that motivates and involves the whole family.” Al Lawrie - Consultant Haematologist within the ANCHOR Unit “I have been fortunate to benefit from Friends of ANCHOR funding both directly and indirectly; the charity funded my research into lymphoma and leukaemia, and every day I see patients being supported by the work Friends of ANCHOR does. I joined the Friends of ANCHOR committee after I was appointed as a consultant a few years ago, and this really brings home how much effort, time and commitment people give to raise funds for Friends of ANCHOR. With this in mind, I decided it was time to do something myself to give back. With the exception of ferries to Orkney and Shetland, I cycled to visit all the 20for20 anchors throughout the North-east. As well as enabling me to visit areas of Scotland I had not seen before, I was also able to visit community hospitals along the way, which provide community care to ANCHOR Unit patients locally. My trip also highlighted the geographic challenges faced by patients, relatives and staff across the region, which Friends of ANCHOR is always working to address, by funding equipment such as video conferencing facilities which alleviate the need for patients to travel to Aberdeen for some appointments. As a committee member and consultant in the ANCHOR Unit, I would like to thank everyone who fundraises for the charity. It makes a huge difference to patient care.”
FOA-Get-Involved-2019.qxp_Layout 1 09/01/2019 11:50 Page 8 PUSH YOUR LIMITS There are so many ways you can set yourself a goal and make your mark in 2019. Outwith the charity’s usual affiliated events, there are many more fitness-based or adrenaline events throughout the country. Whether it’s finding your stride at the Kiltwalk, gearing up for a big cycle challenge or convincing yourself to jump out of a plane for a 10,000ft skydive, there is something out there to suit all interests. Judith Forrest - BHGE 10k Finisher “Before my diagnosis, I had seen articles about what Friends of ANCHOR does, and I was aware of Courage on the Catwalk and various other events. I had always wanted to do a 10k and my sister-in-law Sheila had previously run for Friends of ANCHOR. “When I got my diagnosis in December 2016, I thought ‘Right, this is the time to grab the opportunity and do it’. The training helped me feel better and gave me something to focus on. I felt good on the day of the race and being part of a group of people running for the same cause was really motivating, I was so pleased I had done it. I started treatment the week after. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but knowing Friends of ANCHOR is there has made it easier – the help given is wonderful, so I’m happy that I’ve been able to play my small part.” Liam (10) and Joshua (6) Brands – Wee Wipeout Warriors Liam: I wanted to raise money for Friends of ANCHOR because they help lots of people with cancer who need it, and it’s sad that they have to be ill. I’m lucky it’s not my mummy or daddy.” Joshua: “I loved the inflatables - they were so much fun and I really enjoyed sliding off the bottom of the giant slide. Wee Wipeout was A-mazing!!!” Mum Diane Brands, Clinical Specialist Nurse in the ANCHOR Unit: “The boys are both excited to do the event again next year and raise even more money for Friends of ANCHOR. I’m really happy that the charity has provided a way for them to get involved and have fun at the same time.”
