Lauren’s Adventure Lauren’s Adventure I’ve said it before, and I shall say it again; being a fundraiser is fantastic! You never know what you will be doing from one week to the next as so many of you come up with fantastic, creative ideas to help raise money to enable us to do fantastic work. August 15th brought me one of those ‘pinch me I’m dreaming’ moments when I arrived on a field at 8am ready for Hornby & District Sheepdog & Sheep Show. The event was organised by the local committee who choose a different charity each year, something which is close to their hearts. Recently, 3 members of their community received life-changing treatment at Lancashire Cardiac Centre based within Blackpool Victoria Hospital so they chose us to benefit this year – fantastic! The day included sheep judging, cake eating, sheepdog showing and lots of awards all surrounded by many different types of sheep and fantastic people. The total is to be announced in October but the day is said to have raised over £2,000 for our Heart of Gold Fund. Although I still can’t tell the difference between a Texal and a Lincoln I am very grateful that I got to spend the day showing sheep and raising the profile of the charity. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped organise and attended the day, it was a huge success. Have you got a fantastic fundraising idea? Whatever your idea, I am here M to help! Give me a call or an e-mail today for more information. Many Thanks, Lauren. lauren.codling@bfwh.nhs.uk Call: 01253 952369 / 07826 908961 3 enhance ma g a z ine
Tree of Lights Appeal and Event Tree Celebrate and remember Of Lights loved ones Each year Blue Skies Hospitals Fund arranges a Tree of Lights event in the restaurant at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. This year it will take place on Monday 11th December at 7.30pm but sadly this is likely to be the last time it takes place at the hospital as we are outgrowing the space. This event has a special place in people’s hearts because it enables them to celebrate the life of a loved one in a positive, deeply personal and very special way at such an emotional time of year. They help friends, families and colleagues to come together. The event is open to anyone, not just people whose loved one was cared for by our Trust. Chaplaincy staff and volunteers are on hand to listen to memories and provide support where people feel a need. For everyone there is a cuppa and mince pie and the opportunity to enjoy music and readings in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Everyone who attends will also receive a memento of the evening. You are invited not only to be comforted by remembering a loved one but also to make a donation and have their name recorded in our Book of Remembrance which will remain open in the hospital chapel throughout December and will be opened at the Tree of Lights event. All monies raised will be used to support those going through bereavement throughout the Trust. Please help us with this appeal by telling your friends and colleagues about the service. Donations of £20 or more in memory of a loved one will also receive a special pin badge which will be available to them on the night. Monday 11th December at 7.30pm If you would like to attend the event, enter a personal dedication in the Book of Remembrance or just make a donation please complete the form opposite and return it to the address shown. If you would like further information please contact Nicci Hayes T: 01253 957904 E: nicci.hayes@bfwhospitals.nhs.uk . 4

Gig Gigging The Night Away Not only are the Fylde Coast NHS employees dedicated to their work they also have fantastic ideas for supporting Blue Skies Hospitals Fund. One such person is Mark Taylor who works in the Stores department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Together with his colleague Liz Walton he organised a gig night, the third in aid of the charity. Raising £1,003 the event clearly struck the right cord with bands and music lovers. Held at the Stanley Ward Conservative Club in Blackpool, the monies raised will all be going to the Neonatal Unit at the hospital. Mark said: We have organised this event for a few years now and the bands always support us. The night takes six months to organise but thanks to their support and the backing we have had from the Stanley Ward club and their staff it was a great night and I can’t thank everyone enough. Bands that played included The AC/DC Experience, Joe Mercel and the Sweet Aspirations, English Electro, The Getsettes, Twelve Paces and Free Roll. Ann Hedley, Interim Head of Fundraising for Blue Skies Hospitals Fund, said: It’s great when a community comes together to enjoy something like this and to raise money for a good cause. Mark’s enthusiasm and commitment shines through and, for me, it’s great that no one had to wade through the mud of a field to enjoy such great music. We can’t thank him enough for his continuing support. Mark has something else in mind for next year so watch this space to see what he comes up with. No doubt it will be another fabulous event to out do his previous ones. 6
Pork Butchers Continuing Support From... ...The Pork Shop,Poulton Hint of Pink work with Blue Skies Hospitals Fund to support the Breast Care Centre at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Amongst their many supporters is a butchers in Poulton le Fylde. At the start of Hint of Pink several years ago Lee and Gordon donated £500 to the charity for the Breast Care Centre. Since then they and latterly just Lee, as Gordon has retired, have supported us with pork pies, having a bucket continuously on the counter at their shop on Church Street, and attending the Hint of Pink Dinner Dances. The Pork Butcher’s support over the years has raised in excess of £4,000 from the buckets alone – amazing what pennies can add up to! Hint of Pink and the Breast Care Centre wish to say a very big thank you to Lee, the staff and patrons for their continuing support. Couch to 5K and Beyond COUCH TO 5K AND BEYOND You may have seen our article last month about Lisa Huddleston, Mum of two, who has been fundraising for the Heart of Gold Fund. Here she tells us about her journey and completing her first 5k run: I started the ‘Couch to 5K’ programme initially in September 2015 & really struggled with running. I occasionally attended a running club and in March 2016 I tried to run a 5K route with the running club and had really bad chest pain. I went to see my GP and after a few weeks of tests, I was diagnosed with ALCAPA, an undiagnosed condition I had been born with. Two months after my diagnosis, on 5th July, 2016, Mr Duncan performed a double heart bypass and a repair to stop the deoxygenated blood feeding my heart, at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. In the months that followed, I attended cardiac rehabilitation courses and having had a satisfactory cardiac treadmill result in May, 2017, I felt able to begin the ‘Couch to 5K’ programme again, which I started on 7th June. Friends came to run with me to encourage me, building up from 60 seconds of running to 30 minutes of continuous running over a 9 week period. I found the running easier than I had expected, as now my heart was functioning as it should, it was still hard though. In July, I signed up to do my first ever race, the Blackpool Illuminations 5K, on 26th August. I asked my best friend from School to run it with me, she is a very good runner, and she encouraged me all the way round. I set off, along with about 1,500 other people, 8pm on Saturday night, with the lights of the illuminations glowing as it got darker. I ran the whole route, including a steep climb up a hill between 3 and 4 km, which I wasn’t expecting. I was grateful I had trained on the hills where I live! The emotion of the last few months came flooding out in tears as a neared the finish line, to the cheers of my parents, husband and children. I completed the run in 40 minutes 25 seconds and have been collecting sponsorship for ‘Heart of Gold Fund’. So far on my Just Giving page and paper sponsor form I have raised £532. 8
Host a Hotpot HOST A HOTPOT... ...Well, we are based in Lancashire Blue Skies Month was such a fantastic time of fun, frivolity and friendship that we sat down here at Blue Skies and thought what can we do as winter approaches to help everyone enjoy themselves again? Sitting around the table we began to talk about MasterChef and The Great British Menu and our favourite topic of food, thereby we got around to Hotpot. Si Of course we have Lancashire Hotpot but there are variations on the toppings – should it be sweet potato for the health conscious, some think that traditional is sacrosanct. Then there’s veggie and vegan or even a Thai Hot Pot. Wikipedia says: ‘Also known as steamboat, is a variety of East Asian food, prepared with a simmering pot of stock at the dining table. P R While the hot pot is kept simmering, ingredients are placed into the pot and are cooked at the table. ’So we think that there’s lots D of variety and could even be a little bit of competitiveness between friends over this. Host a Hotpot in October and your guests may even cook their own food if you choose the Asian version. Whatever you choose isn’t it a lovely thought to share this warming comfort food with family, friends and colleagues and to raise awareness of Blue Skies Hospitals Fund at the same time? Perhaps you could raise a little money by holding a simple supper and asking people to make a donation or asking your workplace to put it on the menu for a day with a collecting tin next to the checkout for loose change or those heavy £5 notes? Whatever you would like to do we would be grateful of your support and of course we’re here to help. To kick off the month our friends at Carousel Diner have kindly offered to Host a Hotpot and Psychic evening on Wednesday 4th October. For only £10 there’ll be the finest homemade hotpot served with red cabbage & bread roll (vegetarian M option available). B There’ll be a raffle and lots of fun. The Diner is licensed so you can enjoy your favourite tipple as well as perhaps finding out what the future holds. I’m afraid that this event is open to over 18s. If you would like to register an event or would like ideas or support please contact Lauren on T: 01253 952369 E: lauren.codling@bfwh.nhs.uk. We’d love to hear from you. Sandcastle Supports Blue Skies Spiral Sandcastle Supports Blue Skies Spiral As the sun shone down on Blackpool promenade, on the afternoon of Saturday 22nd July, a spiral of coins was created outside Sandcastle Waterpark. £190 was raised on the day through a children’s tombola and the spiral of coins. There was even a visit from Sandcastle Waterpark’s very own monkey, Bing. Blue Skies Hospitals Fund had asked the community to ‘Turn the Blue Skies Gold with £1 coins new and old. Leading up to the event collecting boxes were hosted by Smyths Toys, Marton and M&S, Blackpool Victoria Hospital and these were used to begin the spiral on the day. Sandcastle Waterpark have become great partners of Blue Skies Hospitals Fund. Not only did they host this event but they have also allowed some of our other supporters from the National Citizens Service to hold events there too. They continue to give huge support to the work our donors enable us to do. Mark Wilkins, Head of Marketing at Sandcastle Waterpark said: “We were delighted that Ann and Lauren wanted to hold their £1 coin and tombola fundraising events at Sandcastle Waterpark. In supporting health care and medical research locally, Blue Skies is an amazing charity that allows fantastic work to be carried out at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and across Fylde and Wyre for the local community and visitors to our area. We look forward to working with the team at Blue Skies on their future fundraising endeavours.” Thank you to everyone who donated and enabled the day to be such a success and a huge thank you to all the staff at Sandcastle Waterpark for their involvement and support (and all the coffee that they supplied Ann and Lauren with on the day!) 12
