W ould you like to smile at someone and know you’ll get a smile back? There’s one carwash where the Golden Rule still applies, and you can find it in the greater St. Louis area. Friendly staff at Country Club Car Wash will greet you with full, flex, or express service options, offered in the longstanding tradition of the company’s late founder, Randy Bluestone. “Randy’s business philosophy was simple. Treat people the way you would like to be treated, provide a clean and inviting facility, and of course, the best carwash possible,” explains Mark Kummer, who currently owns Country Club with Randy’s widow, Barb Bluestone. Country Club Car Wash is a six-location touchless process chain. All sites feature Mobil gas stations and five also include On the Run convenience stores. WashTrends / June 2017 9
Barb and Mark preserve Randy’s legacy by emphasizing friendliness and training for it. On the first Tuesday of every month, the management team holds a staff training meeting which begins with a re-affirmation of company policies. Then, they break the group into individual stations to work on fundamental skills such as how to dry a vehicle, do interior glass, vacuum, and shampoo mats. All new hires and anyone needing attention in any area is required to attend. In this way, Country Club maintains its standard of excellence. Country Club Car Wash prides itself on the care it gives to customers and their vehicles. Mark Kummer MARK KUMMER & BARB BLUESTONE, OWNERS explains, “Since our original store opened in 1989 we have been cleaning cars touchless. As this became more popular, many operators tried the touchless process but eventually moved backed to the friction model. We have stayed true to the touchless aspect. We feel our customers appreciate this way of cleaning their vehicles.” Country Club’s staff is neat, courteous, and polite. Their demeanor pairs nicely with the décor. The chain’s newest On the Run convenience store in St. Peter’s, Missouri, is especially “clean and inviting” and was completely designed in-house. Barb and Mark wanted to do away with the standard drop ceiling and drop-in light fixtures. Instead, they elevated the ceiling; exposed the ductwork; and introduced reclaimed barn wood, corrugated metal, and hanging LED lights to achieve a modern, airy vibe. It also boasts a beer cave and many fresh food items, attracting customers of all ages. The LED lights are part of a broader effort to implement green technologies. Country Club has kept up with trends and shown concern for the environment by changing their gas canopies and wash tunnel lights to LED fixtures, and they use green soaps when possible. Good business owners know that keeping customers happy is the key to success, and even when the wash is done, Country Club wants their customers to know that satisfaction is paramount. They have a 48-Hour Clean Car Guarantee. As their website points out: Rain spots? Dusty roads? Overzealous birds? No problem. “For whatever reason, just return within 48 hours and we will rewash the exterior. No questions asked,” says Mark. 10 WashTrends / June 2017
ON THE RUN CONVENIENCE STORE Maintaining ties to the community was important to Randy Bluestone when he founded Country Club, and this value is still critical to the success of the business today. Country Club makes quarterly charity donations. “At our monthly management meeting, everyone is required to nominate a charity that is their choice to donate to.” Their biggest event last year – proposed in one of those monthly meetings – was with the BackStoppers organization. BackStoppers provides financial assistance to the families of police, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs in the St. Louis area who have lost their lives or suffered catastrophic injury in the line of duty. Mark explains, “We sold boots to our customers, who donated $10,000 to this event, which we [then] matched, and donated a check for $20,000.” This first-time event for BackStoppers was such a success that Country Club Car Wash plans to continue this event annually. Country Club’s charity efforts are consistent and substantial; they also donate gift certificates on a weekly basis for sports teams, trivia nights, and benefit events. Country Club’s largest social media marketing tool is Facebook. Their interactive page features “free wash” contests and other “quirky things to keep people interested,” says Mark. They also have a text club: customers can opt in to receive special offers or reminders of current offers. Their On the Run brand affiliation also has an app which enables them to run offers for free washes. It’s easy to believe that Randy would be proud of the work that Barb and Mark are accomplishing in serving the needs of their customers. With smiling staff, green technologies, charitable work in the community, up-to-date marketing tools, and clean car guarantees, Country Club makes special efforts to please the most discriminating drivers. When Washing Cars Is Your Whole World BENTLEY BRANDON IS CHANGING THE WAY AMERICA PERCEIVES CARWASHES 16 WashTrends / June 2017
WRITTEN BY LUCIA REGAN B entley Brandon, known as the guru of carwashing to many, has been working in the industry since the tender age of 13, where he first learned to wash a car from his father in his hometown of Smyrna, Georgia. At first he started working to help his family out after his mother told him he was old enough to get a job. Now, 20 years later, his enthusiasm for clean cars has continued to grow and thrive, and he is his own boss. A business mogul, Brandon owns Luxury Wash all-hand carwash, My Neighborhood Car Wash which makes “house calls,” Bentley Car Care – which encompasses service, products, entertainment, and media – and a unique company called Car Wash Careers that is a platform solely for connecting people with jobs in the automotive industry. Ever since Brandon purchased his first business for $300 at age 24, he was inspired to do great things, and he was extremely enthusiastic. “I didn’t just want to be a regular carwash,” he admits. “ I wanted to be the number-one car-care company in the world!” He created his “dream business,” called Luxury Wash, and then, in addition to washing cars, he began creating products for parents and children, releasing books and entertainment and even educational courses. “Additionally, we pioneered the first-ever staffing company exclusively offering careers for candidates desiring to be a part of the automotive industry: Car Wash Careers,” he says. However, Brandon ran into some operational issues with local government, so he did what he thought was the logical thing: He ran for city council! He fell short, but after deciding he had a bigger calling in his life, he launched a community initiative that has spread across the nation, called I Love All Americans. Its purpose is to inspire people not to quit, but to keep going. It’s inclusive of all different cultures, nationalities, sexual orientation, etc. “It’s an act of God that we’re meeting,” he explains. Brandon believes in hand washing, and that’s the only way his brand cleans cars. “My father taught me the correct way to wash a car, and I still do it that way. I don’t believe in machine washing,” he proclaims, explaining that the only thing automated is the people. Elaborating on some negative effects of machine-washing, he says, “Sometimes you get swirls, and spiders from the brushes. Your paint is just like your skin – it has layers. Brandon compares washing cars to putting lotion on your skin, saying, “If I washed my body like the machines wash cars I would have a rash or start peeling my skin!” WashTrends / June 2017 17
To prove that hand washing is as efficient – or more efficient – than machine washing, Brandon created an event called Man vs. Machine, which put humans to the task, competing with the automated carwash. He enthusiastically promoted the event, which drew a large crowd that included the mayor of Smyrna. “It took four guys 2:36 to clean the exterior, where it took an automated tunnel 3:00 to do the same thing, and then it wasn’t even completely dried,” he says, proving his theory. You might think hand washing would be more expensive than automated washing, but at Luxury Wash the price is $30 for an inside and out wash, which is right in line with most automatic carwashes. Brandon took hand washing a step further when a customer invited him to come over to his house to wash his car. “He said, ‘Come on by, I have a hose and towels,’” explains Brandon. “Then a light bulb went on and we started the business My Neighborhood Car Wash,” he continues. MNCW is a unique “house call” carwash that only costs $30. “We go door to door washing people’s cars in their driveways. My example of a luxury wash is having someone do the work for you!” he concludes. Bentley Brandon not only wants to clean the cars of the world, he wants to prevent them from getting so dirty in the first place. He has created Bentley Brandon’s Children’s Auto Etiquette Book in the hope that children will learn to keep cars clean from an early age. Along with the book comes Bentley Brandon’s Backseat Pledge, which asks children to commit to taking responsibility for the cleanliness of their car. “Something as simple as avoiding accidents based on not eating or drinking while in the vehicle or while it is moving assists in preventing messes. This concept not only keeps cars cleaner, but it’s safer, and the overall atmosphere in the car is happier and more peaceful,” he explains. “Vehicle etiquette, education, fun, and peace of mind along with improving discipline are just a few of the benefits you and your children will enjoy after taking the Backseat Pledge.” Brandon’s idea has been so successful he recently got a partnership with Toys “R” Us with the Backseat Pledge. 18 WashTrends / June 2017
In noticing a lack of entertainment in the carwash industry, Brandon created Car Wash Diaries, a show that’s part of Bentley Car Care. He also owns Car Wash Sports and is launching Car Wash Tips, which is the do’s and don’t’s of caring for your car. “I want to be entertainment!” exclaims Brandon. Perhaps the most intriguing of all of Brandon’s business ventures is CarWash Careers. It is a pioneer company that focuses on the automotive industry. It’s for mechanics, emission techs and others who are inspired to love the industry – those who love cars and the atmosphere of being around cars. “I checked around and found that nobody was an exclusive recruiter for the carwash industry,” states Brandon. “Furthermore, many applicants for carwash-related jobs come in with no prior knowledge of carwashing, and there is also a very high turnover. The industry was empty and I wanted to fill that void. We’re sitting on a goldmine!” “Today, we are the first company in the automotive industry to offer exclusive online recruiting services globally. With CarWash Careers, people can browse the most sophisticated job seekers and employer ads,” says Brandon. “Understanding the employee point of view and job-seeking process helps the automotive industry by creating a platform solely for us. That will help people improve their lives with better jobs, and employers find the best talent.” “We’re about to change the whole carwash industry,” exclaims Brandon enthusiastically. And he is well on his way to doing that! By the way, in case you were wondering what kind of car Brandon owns, it’s a Bentley GT, his dream car! WashTrends / June 2017 19

An Event to Remember WRITTEN BY PAT TROY WashTrends / June 2017 21
T he Mid-Atlantic Carwash Association board decided to make its May 2017 event an “event to remember.” This was the organization’s 20th anniversary, so the group wanted to do something very special. Former MCA board member and carwash industry leader David West is the marketing manager at the new Dominion Raceway south of MCA CELEBRATED ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY Fredericksburg, Virginia. West invited AND FOUNDING MEMBERS WERE ON HAND the MCA membership for a special tour and much more. It is no secret that carwash folks love cars, so it was not a surprise to see that this event attracted many attendees. The evening started with go-cart rides. One long-time member, Bob Boardman, brought his entire family. Attendees loved the thrill of racing around the track in a “low to the ground” go-cart while admiring friends and family looked on. Dominion Raceway hosted a reception at the 118 Lounge and then the group moved to the Champion’s Suite for a white-tablecloth barbeque dinner. Chocolate cake was the perfect dessert to celebrate the 20th anniversary. Founding members Dave DuGoff (also current president) of College Park Carwash (College Park, Maryland), Bob Boardman of Waterworks Carwash (Elkridge, Maryland) and Bill Bascom of Clean Machine (Charlottesville, Virginia) were recognized. A highlight of the evening was the awarding of a special plaque to David West in recognition for his long-term service to MCA and the carwash industry. The dinner program focused on new model cars with various automated features and how carwashes can best deal with them. The speaker was Umur Selek, service project engineer with Subaru of America. He gave a great presentation on Subaru’s new Eyesight feature. After the meeting, the Eyesight-equipped car he drove down from New Jersey was available for the members to view. Of course, proud Subaru owners in the audience got ROBERT STAIR AND TOM DEPUTY, OF MINE to take home some special Subaru ROAD AUTO SPA IN FREDERICKSBURG, VA, merchandise. TOAST THE EVENING’S FESTIVITIES Operators, including a large group from Autobell, had questions related to carwashes and the new features. With Subarus, there are clear instructions in the manual for disabling automated features. The features and disabling mechanisms vary by make and model, and the owners rarely know what to do. Until there is some commonality across manufacturers, carwashes will have to use special diligence. Common carwash problems include automatic braking, auto-door locking with the key in the car, automatic windshield operation when water hits the windshield, and more. The evening would normally end at the end of the program, but this event was special. At 8:15 p.m. the group adjourned to the performing hall Dominion Raceway for a complementary concert by Austin’s Grammy-winning Reckless Kelly. The evening ended on a very positive note and comments from many were, “We have to do this again next year.” DAN CALLIHAN, MCA TREASURER UMUR SELEK, SERVICE PROJECT AND GLEN BURNIE CARWASH ENGINEER WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA OWNER, WITH WIFE, LANA. The questionnaire should contain a series of questions you’ve structured beforehand: • What other products could be offered in our lobby or vestibule to make it more convenient for you? • What other services can we offer you? • What is your top annoyance when you come here? • What are areas for improvement here? “If you are not savvy in this area,” he says, “consider getting a marketing consultant to help you. It does cost more than having your own staff do it.” One of the “amazing success stories” he’s observed are the people, he said, who’ve partnered with community organizations, like a high school band or a nonprofit. Those groups come in to the wash to help do the washes. The group or organization sells coupons to go to the wash and, in turn, the wash donates a portion of the proceeds to the organization. “Everybody wins,” Jeffes says. “The carwash wins because it increases traffic by 30 percent because a team is selling the event. These carwash owners sat down and said, ‘How do we build this as a win/win project?’ They partner it out. Everybody comes to the carwash instead of the organization setting up a do-it-yourself operation. The wash can charge a premium price, too.” Jeffes said one carwash company conducted competitive analysis – their employees scouted out the competition. A sort of undercover intelligence-gathering operation. They found people spending time in the competitor’s full-service lobby. Their reaction? “How can we do that?” They came up with a solution: They installed WiFi and put in comfortable work areas, plush leather couches and shelves lined with items to purchase. They quickly realized an extra revenue stream from the sales of the extra products. “If you are not marketing savvy, you’ve got to bring in an outside consultant to help you, even for a few hours. If you want the consultant to personally conduct the survey, that will cost a little more money.” But, he said, “You make it up in adding products and services you didn’t have before and added revenue stream.” Jeffes has seen one carwash company’s promotion in which it asked customers to provide their most creative carwash photos. The best photos were posted on the company’s Facebook site and hung in the carwash’s lobby. Another company conducts a contest in which it asks for customer comments via social media postings and in lobby posters and flyers. “Give us suggestions on how to improve,” the flyers read. Jeffes says the customers who submitted the three top suggestions on how to improve received either a gift card or another incentive. “Empower your customers to submit suggestions and sensitize them with the prizes,” says Jeffes. “Customers like to get engaged and participate.” WashTrends / June 2017 31
“In the past two years,” he notes, “many different businesses have done contests, like re- naming contests. One restaurant received thousands of suggestions on a new name for the eatery. Winners received prizes worth $250, $100 and $50. The same method works for suggesting how to improve a carwash business.” In his travels around the U.S. Jeffes took note of a carwash in Tampa. “It is one of the most dynamic carwashes. It has a mobile carwash business which can go to the customer and wash cars. At its on-site wash it has a hand wax lane. The company had conducted a survey over six- month period. “One customer offered a suggestion that stood out: “It would be really great to have a high-end hand wax and detailing area for people who can afford it.” Jeffes says, “The carwash owner realized the high-end customers wanted to be pampered and receive ultra-premium service. They wanted their vehicles cleaned top to bottom and shiny. The business went gangbusters after the ultra-luxurious hand waxing service lane was put in. It had waiting lines. It was not cheap but people really wanted it. The carwash business would have never known if they hadn’t conducted the contest requesting ideas on how to super-charge their business. “The rest is millions of dollars of history.” 32 WashTrends / June 2017
BLOG A Periodic Blog Posting From WashTrends and the Industry Leaders From the WashTrends.com Website BY PAT TROY, PUBLISHER OF WASHTRENDS Carwash Words is a periodic blog. Posts are written by an array of carwash industry folks on carwash related topics of their own choosing. It is my observation that innovation in the carwash industry springs from individual hard work and flashes of genius, coupled with a healthy competitive environment. The trends don’t trickle down from a few people at the top. On the contrary, they seem to percolate up from the bottom. In my opinion, that is why a magazine like WashTrends is important to the industry. Somebody needs to keep an eye on what is driving change and report it throughout the industry. RAWR! CENTRAL TEXAS’ FIRST COIN-OPERATED DINOSAURS DEBUT AT JURASSIC CAR WASH Animatronic T-Rex and Styracosaurus come alive when customers insert 75 cents into machines Jurassic Car Wash now showcases the first coin-operated mechanical animatronic dinosaurs in central Texas. The two museum- and exhibition-quality dinos are a Styracosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex— each 12 feet long and 6 feet tall— at the wash’s location at 4809 South Congress Avenue. The realistic dinosaurs come alive with sound for more than two full minutes when 75 cents (quarters only) is deposited. When activated, the dinosaurs open and close their mouths in synchronization with loud roars, thrash their heads and tails from side to side, move their chests up and down to simulate breathing, and blink their red-toned glaring eyes. The coin-activated dinosaurs operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day (the same as Jurassic Car Wash itself). There are 16 security cameras and four large LED lights on the premises to keep the facilities safe and secure after dark. The T-Rex and Styracosaurus weigh around 300 lbs. each and were manufactured to look as much like their extinct counterparts as possible— with accurate colors, proportions, and detailing. The two coin-operated dinos are located in the back of the carwash premises behind a chain link fence, suspended over a retention pond for maximum visibility and safety. There is also a third stationary dinosaur in the retention pond, a Velociraptor hatching from an egg. Owner of Jurassic Car Wash and longtime entrepreneur John Borek set out to make his carwash “fun and different with a dash of Austin weird”—unlike the other carwashes all over town. Borek has always been a big fan of eclectic yard art, but when he installed two mechanical dinosaurs at his house for Halloween (the same two that are now coin- operated at the wash), the creatures weren’t well received. The neighborhood association’s law firm sent a threatening letter demanding they be removed, and this sparked Borek’s idea for Jurassic Car Wash. You could say the rest is history— Jurassic history! Jurassic Car Wash also features three other animatronic dinosaurs that come alive regularly and for free: a giant T-Rex that squirts water on cars as they enter the automatic wash tunnel, and a Pterodactyl on the roof and a Dilophosaurus on the building that come alive on the hour and half hour daily between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. 38 WashTrends / June 2017
“I wanted my carwash to be an entertaining one-stop shop for families,” says Borek. “It’s about amusing people and making them smile.” For more information, visit http://jurassiccarwash.com/. For real-time updates, visit Facebook.com/JurassicCarWash and Instagram.com/JurassicCarWash. About Jurassic Car Wash Jurassic Car Wash is fun and different, just like Austin. Customers can enjoy a premium clean carwash while sitting in the presence of animatronic dinosaurs. Open 24/7 and located at 4809 South Congress Avenue, Jurassic Car Wash has four convenient self- service bays, a full service automatic carwash, and a pet wash on its premises. PRIME SHINE OPENS 18TH LOCATION Prime Shine Car Wash, California’s largest independently owned exterior express car wash, opened a brand new location in Patterson this past Wednesday. The new site marks the 18th location opening for Prime Shine. “The opening of our 18th location is part of a larger goal of operating 20 locations by the year 2020,” said Evan Porges, Prime Shine’s CEO/President. “We are excited to bring our brand to Patterson. Residents can enjoy and experience our fast and friendly service, quality products and exceptional employees without having to drive longer distances to other cities in which we operate.” Prime Shine Car Wash opened its first location in Modesto on north McHenry Avenue on April 11, 1991. What started then as a single-location car wash founded with the goal of changing the way Californians think about washing their cars has grown to become Carlifornia’s largest independently owned car wash chain. Prime Shine was the first of its kind in the state, serving customers looking for a high-quality wash, at a reasonable price, with friendly and professional staff. With a top-to-bottom clean that is value-priced, and finished in just three minutes, Prime Shine filled the niche between time consuming and pricey full-service washes, and the do-it-yourself option. Since opening Prime Shine Car Wash, owners Norm and Evan Porges have been the driving force behind the company that has washed millions of vehicles throughout the Central Valley. Whether you’re in Stanislaus, San Joaquin or Merced County - you’re never too far from a clean car! For more information about Prime Shine or to find a location near you, visit www.primeshine.com. STUDY: MILLENNIALS AND CENTENNIALS DRIVING DRIVERLESS DEMAND The automotive buyer intelligence firm Autolist.com released a study showing that a large number of millennials (Gen Y) and centennials (Gen Z) are interested in buying an autonomous vehicle today. The Autolist.com analysis, based on a survey of 8,576 vehicle owners, found that millennials and centennials are most desirous of autonomous vehicles, with 48.7% and 44.5% (respectively) indicating a desire to buy an autonomous vehicle today. Additionally, centennial generation men indicated the most desire (59.6%), followed by millennial generation men (53.2%). By contrast, traditionalist generation (ages 70+) women indicated the least desire (13.3%). In terms of trusting autonomous technology, around a quarter of centennials (20.9%) and millennials (18.9%) trust complete autonomy technology today (level 5). However, that number increases to around 40% when respondents were asked to forecast whether they will trust it 10 years from now. Additionally, all generations saw between an 18 and 23– percent increase in trust forecasting 10 years out. Autolist also looked at trust in level 2, semi-autonomous technology today and found patterns in trust based on the make of the vehicle one drives. To that end, male and female drivers of Audi vehicles were among the most trusting of level 2 autonomous technology or above, at 75.0% and 74.3% respectively. Overall, the most trusting group was male drivers of Acuras at 78.7%. As the data demonstrates, automakers cannot get viable autonomous vehicles to the market fast enough—clearly the demand is here to stay, with millennials and centennials leading the way. Autolist.com (www.Autolist.com) is based in San Francisco and is the fastest growing mobile-focused new and used car search engine. With the top rated automotive apps in the Google Play and iOS App Stores, the company is leading the way for consumers looking to research, find and buy their next vehicle across their devices and on the web. 40 WashTrends / June 2017
