Robert Owen, President 822 Freeman Lake Road Elizabethtown, KY 42701 Telephone (270) 737-1079 ~ Email: Owen@kvnet.org 12-15-14 Dear Members, I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful holiday season which means the New York specialties are right around the corner. I'm sure many of us are already planning for our trip to the Big Apple. The show will be held at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel on Sunday, February 15, 2015. The theme for this year is "New Yorkie!.....New Yorkie!". We have a great panel of judges with Carole Della Penna judging sweepstakes and Lydia Coleman Hutchinson judging all the classes. Awards will be presented at the membership meeting. The planning book is on the website, and the premium list will be out soon. Both the YTCA and the Greater New York club plan on making the event worth your trip to New York. Please remember that our Roving National for 2015 will be held June 10-14 in Louisville, Kentucky at the Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport Hotel hosted by the Ohio Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club of Kentucky. Lin Fryman is the 2015 Roving Show Chair and she will need members to volunteer to make it a success. There will be three conformation shows, as well as six companion event trials and plenty of other activities for everybody to have a really great time! We are still looking for a venue for our 2016 National Roving Specialty Show. If you are interested or considering putting in a bid, please let us know as soon as possible. The offices of Vice President (Vicki Meadows), Secretary (Wendy Doss) and the Board positions of Cookie Rogan, Helen Scott, and Jennie Wright are up for election this year. Members of the Nominating Committee are Carole Della Penna, Chair (FL), Janet Jackson (CA), Jerry Miller (NM), Mary Nehf (IL) and Shirley Petterson (PA). The nominating committee’s choices will be announced soon and nominations from the floor will be accepted. Have a great New Year with many wins, and I hope to see you all in New York! Sincerely, Bob ~3~

Georgina reported that Matina will bring several of the Heritage II books to New York which will be for sale to members. Also Matina would like suggestions for health related topics to go up on the website, her comments were, as there are many good articles in the Heritage II that are health related, could some of those be used. It was a collective suggestion that Matina seek permission from the authors of the articles and add some of these on the YTCA.org website. I feel that by demanding or implying that board members must attend both specialties each year we are limiting the number of members that can run for the board. Some members who may not be able to attend both or either specialty but could be absolutely amazing and useful board members don't run because of that requirement. Anything that affects the entire membership I feel should be voted on by the membership. I make a motion that we let the members vote as to whether they feel all board members must attend both NY and the Roving Specialties. That a ballot will be sent out to the membership with the next YTCA mailing. A discussion was held with the pros and cons being discussed by several board members. Fallon seconded the motion. ------ PAST ----- YTCA FOUNDATION GRANT SUPPORT HISTORY The Foundation’s primary over all mission is “to support and promote research into hereditary and other diseases of Yorkshire Terriers and other breeds of dogs.” Every year the Board diligently seeks out research being done that will address the conditions that were identified in the 2006 Health Survey. Table I below is a summarization of the research the Foundation has supported through the years. It shows both the grants that have been supported through American Kennel Club - Canine Health Foundation (AKC- CHF) and Morris Animal Foundation (MAF). Table I only shows the grants our Foundation supported. Additionally, the Foundation has also supported the Five and Seven Year Rabies Challenge Fund as well as supporting a veterinary student at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine one year. ~ 18 ~
These are only the grants funded by the YTCAF and do not include non-grant research studies and projects that have also been funded First shown in Table I is the funding amounts required for each of the grants listed which has been awarded to the Principal Investigator by CHF or MAF. Next is shown the amount of the YTCAF’s support for each of the grants; the amount in the yellow rectangle is for CHF and in the orange rectangle is for MAF. When a grant is supported, it is supported for the entire “Project Dates” of that particular grant. Also, please note the summary in the bottom row shows the total amount of grants the YTCAF is supporting in each particular year. It is interesting also to note how many grants have been supported from the Foundation’s funds and how that money was spent to support the specific health conditions. To show this breakdown, please review the following charts which are numbered Chart 1 for Health Condition; and, Chart 2 for Number of grants supported. ~ 19 ~
For example, in Chart 1 – 39% of our available funds that supported Liver Shunt research was 11 grants (Chart 2); 20% of funds for Cancer research was to support 6 grants; 11% of funds for Rabies Challenge was to support two research projects, etc. ----- PRESENT ----- 2014 INCOME AND EXPENSE PERCENTAGE BREAKDOWN ~ 20 ~
As can be seen in Chart 3 and Chart 4 are the current year’s income and expenses broken down in percentage by resources for the income and percentage of how expenses were addressed. ------ FUTURE ----- As 2014 comes to an end, the Foundation is pleased to have had two successful auctions and we have sponsored another grant on Liver Shunt and Liver Disease that looks very promising. The Foundation Board also has been discussing a grant with a Researcher that may lead us to finding a genetic marker for Collapsed Trachea. This is exciting news and we will be providing you with more information on this in the weeks to come. In the 2006 Health Survey, Collapsed Trachea was the #1 health concern of Yorkshire Terrier breeders and fanciers and it is certainly a large concern for many of the other Toy dog breeds as well. Stay tuned for more information on this in the near future. Hear Ye Hear Ye – A New Award For Yorkies In All The Rings! The Versatility Award: Yorkshire Terriers are active and versatile dogs. They were bred to have the skills and drive to excel in the field, and are happiest when working closely with their owners. Modern day Yorkies and their owners use these skills to compete in the many dog sports available today. To recognize and preserve these traits and to encourage owners to enjoy them, the YTCA offers the Versatility Awards, which reward participation in a variety of dog activities. The Versatility Award is designed so that the average Yorkie and owner, with some effort, can earn one. It asks for one title in three different fields, and a total of seven points. As a conformation title is not required, these awards are open to the pet as well as to the champion. Earning the Versatility Award demonstrates that the Yorkie and owner have put in a concentrated amount of time and effort in training as well as showing and trialing. While YTCA is recognizing and rewarding dog sport activities with the Versatility Award, we also recognize that there are many Yorkies involved in activities that do not offer titles. We know of one herding Yorkie, some Frisbee Yorkies and a number of racing Yorkies. The options of activities for the Yorkshire Terrier is infinite as they are truly a versatile breed. REQUIREMENTS: YTCA membership of owner or co-owner at the time of application is required. Versatility Award requires 7 stars in a minimum of three of the categories. Versatility Excellent Award requires 12 or more stars in a minimum of four of the categories included. These categories include Conformation, Rally, Obedience, Agility, Coursing, Barn Hunt, Nose Work, Flyball, Freestyle, Citizenship, Earth Dog, Dock Diving, Trick Dog, Search and Rescue. Awards will be processed annually awarded at the National Specialty. This award was approved by the board at their August meeting in St. Louis. The application form and additional details are available on the YTCA website. We are working on a National Specialty Versatility Award that will be awarded at each National Specialty and will cover only that show. We expect to have it ready at the 2015 Louisville, KY National Specialty. It will be similar to the Spirit Award given in 2014 in St. Louis. We want to call it the Yorkie Spirit Award! Yorkies In The Other Rings!!! Just what are all these Yorkies doing in other rings and activities? The Companion/Performance Committee has been working on a Versatility Award that will recognize Yorkie teams that are working in many areas of companion and performance events. With this in mind and having been asked recently to contribute to a dog magazine that is putting out an on-line book about Yorkies, we started to check with others on what they are doing with their Yorkies. We know about the AKC recognized sports and recognized titling events. There is Agility, Barn Hunt, Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog, Coursing, Dock Diving, Earth Dog, Fly Ball, Rally, Obedience, Tracking, and Trick Dog. Yes, you did read that list correctly. Those are all titling activities that AKC either offers titles in directly or recognized titles offered by organizations recognized by AKC that can be earned by the Yorkshire Terrier. The only new one from the last year is Dock Diving. And we know of Yorkies who have either earned titles in each of these or are working actively on getting titles in them. But what was surprising was what we found out that Yorkies were also doing in activities that either don’t offer titles or are activities that don’t include either Terriers or Toys to earn AKC titles. We were well aware of Yorkies doing Carting, Freestyle Dancing, Frisbee, and Terrier Racing but we had no idea that we have Yorkies Herding or Weight Pulling. When someone suggested Herding, I asked if the person really knew of a Yorkie who was really, really herding. I got a quick reply and a You Tube link. I’ll share this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8ZvkXpdYX0 or try search ‘Herding Yorkies’ and find a whole list of videos that show different Yorkies herding – mostly sheep. Okay so there are Yorkies who herd! And I have photos of weight pulling Yorkies. I am sure that I will be getting more photos and videos showing our amazingly versatile breed. I am waiting for a video of a gun dog Yorkie with a Yorkie retrieving a duck. What it means is that are a great many of us who love our breed and love living with our breed and that we take our dogs and have them play and work with us. We may be working on titles or we may be just out there doing but our dogs are with us. After all, what can you expect from a breed that includes the famous Smokey? By our National Specialty in June we hope to have the Versatility Award approved and ready for people to apply for and a Versatility National Specialty Award that will be earned at that event. In the meantime we are working on our rings for the first National Specialty in a few years that will have Companion/Performance events. The Companion/Performance Events Committee wants to encourage everyone to participate in one or all of the many Companion and Performance Events open to our breed. A busy, working Yorkie is a happy Yorkie. We also want to encourage the many people training and showing their Yorkies to become members of YTCA and get involved with YTCA. Report of AKC delegates meeting December 13, 2014, Orlando, FL Mr. James Crowley announced that the Nominating Committee: Mr. Wayne Boyd, Chair, Connie Clare, Linda Ayres Turner, Gail LaBerge appointed by the Board of Directors at the July 14, 2014 meeting, has nominated the following Delegates as candidates for such vacancies on the Board of Directors as are to be filled at the next annual meeting of the club on March 10th, 2015. There are three vacancies for the class of 2019. Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia, German Shepherd dog Club of America; Dr. Thomas Davies, Springfield Kennel Club, Steven D. Gladstone, Waterloo Kennel Club, Pursuant to Article VIII of the Bylaws of the AKC the following Delegates have been endorsed in writing by the required number of Delegates as candidates for the vacancies on the Board of Directors for the Class of 2019, to be filled at the next annual meeting of the Club on March 10, 2015: Robert A. Amen, Dr. Gregory J. Pavenza, Nominations were closed. Mr. Alan Kalter, spoke about breeders who adhere to the motto "Breed to Improve". "This large family of AKC breeders share the beliefs that guide their breeding program for a lifetime. Responsible breeders - in their efforts to protect, preserve, and improve their breeds with litter - embrace the advances in health screening and tests. These breeders apply their understanding of the science of genetics by utilizing the screening protocols designed to aid in the selection of a sire and dam. These breeders understand that education is the most powerful tool one can use to improve a breeding program. So they invest in lifelong learning to keep their commitment to continuous improvement. These breeders are accountable for their breeding programs, responsible for the safe environment, and well-being of their dogs”. The AKC Staff and Board have been working on a program to be launched next year. The essence of the program is built on the principles embraced by our most experienced breeders today - health, education, accountability, responsibility, and tradition. The program will allow us to engage and educate a wide scope of breeders on the best breeding practices, while also creating an identifiable resource for the general public to find puppies from responsible breeders who are demonstrating a validated commitment to health testing. Breeders in this program must agree to the following: They must certify that applicable health screens as recommended by the Parent Club for that breed are performed on their breeding stock and they must be prepared to supply proof of such compliance upon request. They must comply with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, including inspections by the AKC. They must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding ownership and maintenance of dogs. They must complete continuing breeder education courses provided or approved by the AKC on an annual basis. Additionally, under this program, the AKC is creating the best free of charge online resource for breeder education in the world. This resource will continue to grow in depth and breadth, serving the needs of all breeders .AKC intends to do all that it can to support those breeders who share our commitment and are willing to accept the responsibility of continuous improvement for the good of all dogs." Mr. Sprung announced that last November the AKC intended to reduce their amount of rental space currently utilized in the North Caroline facility. Beginning next year, most of the registration and customer service departments, consisting of about 40 people, will begin working from their homes. There is a proposed amendment to Chapter 11, Section 1, Dog Show Entries, Conditions Affecting Eligibility of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows, would change the timeframe at which ~ 25 ~
the limited registration must be removed for a dog to compete in a breed competition. Currently, the limited designation must be removed prior to the closing date. This amendment would make it the day of the show rather than the date of the closing date, when the dog would have to have a full registration to compete. This amendment was brought forward by the Dog Show Rules Committee. It will be published in two issues of the online AKC Gazette, and delegates will be asked to vote on it at the March 2015 meeting The following changes to Rules Applying to Dog Shows Chapter 2, Sections 2 - 16 Territories (were voted unanimously). changes in parenthesis ( ).
