APRIL 2021 | VOLUME 51 ISSUE 10 YORBA LINDA LIGHTS The Newsletter of The Yorba Linda Woman's Club A MEMBER OF THE GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS INTERNATIONAL & CALIFORNIAFEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS Upcoming Events As I entered my house this afternoon, I looked up and realized that I still had shamrocks hanging from my front Board Meeting 4.8 7 PM door. Yes, as I write this, it is March. But tomorrow is April. Out to Lunch 4.14-11:30 Kelly's Where did March go? Greg and I ate outside at a local Korner-Placentia restaurant and the wind was so strong, plates were being General Meeting 4.15 7 PM moved. Out like a lion is right! Out to Dinner 4.22 6:30 TBD Location I find it interesting that even though we aren’t meeting, our days are not empty. We are still sewing, collecting denim jackets, etc. We are participating in membership events like our Out-to-Dinners and Lucy Huerta’s wine bottle painting class. Stay aware…we have some other activities planned for you to join. I wish I had hard news about when we can meet again. Ann Walker has taken over the Telephone Tree and she will be updating the tree limbs. This is our meager attempt to stay informed about our members. Please stick with us. At our March General Meeting, we did not have a quorum. Linda Queen was ready to present the new officers. Carrie was ready to present the proposed changes to our Bylaws. Two of our Board Members brought Motions to the Board. All was for naught. For whatever reason, we did not have enough members on Zoom to be able to vote on these things. That A MESSAGE means come April’s General Meeting, these issues and more FROM THE will need to be voted upon. A member today told me she doesn’t do Zoom because her computer or device doesn’t PRESIDENT have a camera. If you don’t have a camera, no problem. Susie Autry Instead of your face, we will see your name and/or phone number. And you and your VOTE will count towards the quorum.

YORBA LINDA LIGHTS ANNUAL DUES PAYMENT Hello YLWC Members, This is a friendly reminder to those members that wish to join our Fabulous Yorba Linda Woman’s Club for the 2021-2022 club year, your dues are now needed. The deadline is coming up soon. I am required to get our portion to Orange District no later than April 30th. We will be calling members in the upcoming weeks, to help remind you. Thank you so very much. I would also like to thank all those that attended our Wine A MESSAGE FROM Painting Membership Fundraiser on Saturday, March 27th. Thank to those that made a donation, but could not attend. 2ND VP I would especially like to say THANK YOU, Leslie Sorrells, for MEMBERSHIP her help in setting up and making cupcakes and Nancy Lucy Huerta Capel for creating some succulent pots for an extra boost in sales. I am honored to say we raised $475 for our general fund!!! DENIM DAY: APRIL 28, 2021. AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN! The campaign began after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction. The reasoning? The victim wore tight pants, under threat, she helped the perpetrator take them off. The court believed this implied consent. The following day the incensed women in Parliament wore jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed Denim Day to raise awareness of victim-blaming and myths that often surrounds sexual violence. Make a statement on the 28th of April by wearing jeans and a teal ribbon for Sexual Assault Month. If someone asks about the ribbon share this story and why you are wearing jeans. Support survivors of sexual violence by raising your voice! Raise awareness!

YORBA LINDA LIGHTS SEW KIND AND THREADS OF LOVE Aileen Baker and Andrea Hagen – Sew Kind Chairmen Jackie McPheeters – Threads of Love Chairman “April Showers bring May Flowers”, and even though we may not get many April showers, the groups still shower the charities with their love and hard work. The ladies in the Sew Kind group have continued to cut and sew at home to create the items we donate to the various charities. The group recently donated 22 of the Trauma Bears to the BACA organization. Ann Walker came to Aileen’s front porch to pick them up, so several children will now receive them for comfort. Thanks to the donation of fleece from several YLWC members, more bears are in the process of being made so those will be donated soon. The gals are also working on all the other projects as well. Threads of Love is now able to donate their preemie baby items to most of the hospitals, and once the gals in the group have been fully vaccinated they will be back to work on all the needed items. As always, if anyone would like to help in either of these projects, just give one of the chairmen a call or email. BYLAWS UPDATE Please plan to attend the next general meeting on April 15 so the bylaws can be reviewed and voted on. Your voice and attendance are important at meetings so the business can be conducted with a membership quorum present.

YORBA LINDA LIGHTS ENVIRONMENT – BIRD SANCTUARY Club Member Question: When is the best time to trim our trees to save bird nests? The Audubon brochure below notes most birds nest between February 1 and August 31, therefore, trees and shrubs should be trimmed during the fall and winter months. In Southern California, nests of hummingbirds, hawks, owls, and others may be found at any time of year. Always check for active nests before trimming. “Keep Bird Nests Safe and Your Trees Healthy” brochure online. Also, our Club has several of these brochures. Please contact me if you’d like one. Environment/Ecological Assistance: Through tree and plant trimming awareness and education, we can improve and maintain the protection and appreciation of our birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. This contributes to achieving balanced and environmentally sound ecosystems within our communities. OLIVIA ALESSI – CHAIR Member picture contribution: The “New” Bald Eagle Babies – Spring is here; It’s a new beginning! By Jackie McPheeters. She says “Our local babies are thriving.”
