Regional Officer’s report Margaret Murray Firstly, may I take this opportunity to wish all yogis and their families a HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. I would like to express my thanks to our Wiltshire County Rep, Tina Bosley for organising the South West Regional Annual General Meeting & Yoga Day and teachers who ran the sessions. Sincere thanks also go to retiring committee members for all their hard work and commitment to our Region. We are still looking for a County Rep for Dorset and a Regional Treasurer so please let me know if you are interested. I would also like to thank all our committee members who are kindly continuing as part of the committee until the next election. We look forward to meeting new members and learning new things – starting fresh with an open mind. We have fantastic yoga days and training events organised for the coming year (See diary of events) and once again we should give grateful thanks to our County Reps for the hard work they do. A request to all SW Region Members, please can you help in your county, if you have any ideas, issues or something to say in OUR Region, I would love to hear from you as this information is very useful to give us a better picture of our Region and develop ways to promote yoga. In 2019, the South West Festival will be held at Exeter University in July. It will be a fun packed weekend so come and join us, see old friends and catch up on region news. Kate Smith will be starting to advertise the weekend soon, so keep an eye on the website. With Love & Regards, Margaret YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 4
Regional Treasurer’s report Karen Ward A Healthy and Happy New Year to all! The financial year for the British Wheel of Yoga ended on 31 October and the regional accounts were prepared, audited and submitted to the AGM and central office on time. Phew! At the time of writing there is £13,019 in the regional accounts and the finances are looking healthy. Best wishes Karen YogaScene Edition 1, 2019 5
Regional Training Officer’s report Nicola Walter and Tina Bosley Firstly, we would both like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and take this opportunity to introduce ourselves on the South West committee, as Regional Training Officers. Many of you will already know one of us, Tina, from a previous role as the Wiltshire representative. The other one, Nicola, is new to the team, having already studied alongside Tina throughout the BWY Diploma and more recently, Integrating Mindfulness and Compassion in professional practice. As we settle into this new role, we shall be looking at ways to support the County Reps who work so hard to ensure we get sufficient IST days and First Aid courses available within our area. More generally, we are keen to look at ways that bring both teachers and students of yoga more opportunities to get together and further their understanding of yoga, and to look at ways to reach others that either are yet to fully appreciate the extensive benefits of yoga, or those that have the will but as yet haven’t found a way to start practicing. YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 6
Whilst we are both buzzing with ideas, as one does when taking on a new challenge, we are both conscious of the most fundamental lesson that yoga has taught us and that is the quality of patience. If we have patience, our minds have a greater chance of being more settled and what we go on to do, from a more settled mind, often has a better quality about it. This has certainly rung true for the both of us. So, we invite you to step into this new and perhaps significantly challenging year, with patience at the heart and steadiness of the mind. . We are always keen to hear from you all, so if you have any thoughts or suggestions that you would like to share with us, please do get in touch at rto.bwysouthwest@gmx.co.uk With Love, Nicola and Tina YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 7
Avon report Mary Allan Hi! My name is Mary Allan and I volunteered for the role of County Rep for Avon in November. I haven’t really got started yet but hope to get going properly in the New Year. As this coincides with having been made redundant in December, I should be able to find some time to organise something, although to be honest, it all feels a bit overwhelming at the moment! I am really keen to make sure that events in the county are relevant for teachers and yoga students and would welcome any suggestions for teachers, themes and venues. So, please, if there’s something you would like to see then let me know by emailing me at cravon.bwysouthwest@gmx.co.uk I have been practising yoga since 1993 and teaching since 2002, qualifying in 2004 with the British Wheel of Yoga. I have somehow fallen into a bit of a specialism of working with people with Parkinson’s disease and find that as I get older the knowledge I have gained doing this really informs my teaching. I look forward to meeting you all at events to be arranged! Best wishes, Mary YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 8
Gloucestershire report Katy Hand Happy New Year Gloucestershire Members! We had good attendance for the 2018 IST days. We welcomed Mary Wyvill, Bones for Life Day in April & Nada Yoga with Rajesh David in October. I have been getting lots of suggestions from members about IST days they would like to see in the area. I have taken your suggestions on board and have booked Stephen Braybrook, the movement man, Brain-Move - applied neurology for Yoga (see later page for more details and booking information). I have had so many suggestions that I am planning to add in an extra IST day this year. There will be 2 more IST days this year, in July and October. These will be available to book on the British Wheel of Yoga Website by the end of January. If you need to update your First Aid Certificate, a day has been booked with Alison Hawthorn at Standish Village Hall on Sunday the 28th April 2019. This is available to book online now. Thank you for all of your suggestions, please continue to contact me with your ideas. Best Wishes Katy YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 9

Cornwall report Kathryn Blackie-Taylor Happy new year to all our Cornwall members. The IST day ‘History of Yoga In Practice’ offered by Wendy Teasdill didn’t attract sufficient bookings in November so has been rearranged for Saturday 20th July. This is a fascinating day which promises to add depth of knowledge to your personal yoga practice as well as your yoga teaching. We are also looking at further ISTs for September onwards. Discussions are ongoing with a couple of tutors and we have just to be able to find suitable dates and available locations. These will be advertised as soon as possible. If you have a particular IST subject which you would like to bring to Cornwall please do let us know. These days are for you to further your knowledge and add to your teaching so we would like to be able to offer days which give you what you need and are interested in. Finally, as some of you know I am a cycle and triathlon coach as well as yoga teacher and my work is more frequently taking me away from the area. At times my ability to do the County Rep role depends on European hotel wifi and I have to play catch-up with communications when I return. If anyone would like to take the County Rep role on this year then do please let me or Sue know. Kathryn and Sue YogaScene Edition 1, 2019 11

On that subject, remember, you can book training days through me using the forms herein, and, that I am your first line of contact in the event of any queries, not Central Office. Wiltshire report Kim Pierpoint My name is Kim Pierpoint, I have been a BWY Teacher for 14 years, I teach a range of styles including hatha, vinyasa and restorative/yin yoga. I am a ‘full time’ yoga teacher, teaching a range of classes, one to ones, workshops and retreats. I like to think that whilst yoga is a serious subject, we can laugh in our practice, and incorporate laughter and smiling in all my classes. Since the first day I walked into a yoga class I loved it, and knew I would teach it to others, eventually, even though I couldn’t do all the postures (Even to this day, I’m still working on plenty). Taking on the role of County Rep is an opportunity to ‘give back’ through volunteering; I am looking forward to engaging with the members of the South West region. My other areas of interest are running, fitness, scuba diving, coffee and CAKE! If you’d like to get in touch to discuss future events, please don’t hesitate to contact me on: crwilts.bwysouthwest@gmx.co.uk or call 07811 385 411 Kim YogaScene – Edition 1, 2019 14

T E A C H I N G P R A N A Y A M A To The Less Experienced June 8/9 2019 A comprehensive course that will give a week by week detailed plan on how to start the process of Teaching Pranayama from the first day that a student walks into your class up to the end of Year 3. PRANAYAMA FOUNDATION COURSE Begins OCTOBER 12, 2019 and runs for 6 days spread roughly 4/5 weeks apart. ‘Prana is the bridge that leads into the deeper dimensions of Yoga. It is literally the ‘breath of life’ and forms the foundation upon which the energy aspect of Yoga is built and developed’. The Course offers an in depth, logical, structured and developmental approach to the practice of Pranayama from its very beginnings, founded in the Mahat Yoga Pranayama, up to, and including, its Classical expression as found in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. BOTH COURSES ARE HELD AT THE LIGHT CENTRE, VICTORIA, LONDON Philip has been teaching Yoga and Pranayama for over 30 years. He has spent many of those years establishing a coherent system of Pranayama practice that is accessible to all. He studied with Swami Gitananda in India in 1980, and founded Yoga Quests in 1984. His teaching is pragmatic and grounded, without ever losing touch with the power and poignancy inherent in the practice. His teaching is, as always, delivered with a sense of reverent humour.
