Investing back into athletic associations Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon is organized by Göteborgs Friidrottsförbund (Gothenburg Track & Field Association). Approximately 4,000 volunteers are involved. The surplus from the events goes directly back to the athletic organizations to invest in the youth programs and the maintenance of the Friidrottens Hus (Indoor Track and Field). One of the explanations of the track and field explosion is a result of the indoor track and field arenas that have been built throughout Sweden. The first full size indoor arena was Friidrottens Hus in Gothenburg that was built by the Gothenburg Track and Field As- sociation financed through own expenses. It was renovated 2005-2006 but without the Göteborgvarvet Half Marathon this would have never been possible. Now there are approximately 25 indoor track and field arenas throughout Sweden. The arena gives clubs and associations the possibility promote youth programs. 10 million SEK to charity About 2000 slots in the Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon 2018 are reserved for charity. All the runners that run for charity have paid a higher registration fee and will run with special designed shirts repre- sented their charity of choice. The charities that Göteborgsvarvet has chosen to work with this year are: Stadsmissionen, Ung Cancer and Ågrenska. We are also cooperating with A Non Smoking Generation, in Cityvarvet. Since 2011 Göteborgsvarvet has donated approximately 10 million SEK to charity. Additionally, Göteborgsvarvet makes a major effort to pay attention to and contribute to the activities of ”Ung Cancer”, the initiative is called the ”Uppvarvningen”. At uppvarvningen.se you can start your own collection for the benefit of Ung Cancer and give extra meaning to your training. Göteborgsvarvet Running groups Göteborgsvarvet Running groups meet and run together from September to May at no extra costs. The groups are led by experienced runners and each year there are a total of 650 running sessions in 40 different places throughout Sweden. To prepare for the half marathon 2018, we’ve arranged 10K races in 21 different cities in collaboration with local running associations. Focus on health and fitness Since 2012 Göteborgsvarvet has put health as a number one focus. We started a health project in 2012 in Gothenburg area, with main focus on physical activity while meeting socially and improving the overall health in the area. Today the project has grown and developed further with running schools for children in five different areas of Gothenburg and also in other parts of Sweden. Göteborgsvarvet: a sustainable event Göteborgsvarvet is constantly working towards becoming an even more sustainable event through key elements such as social engagement, economy and environment. What does Göteborgsvarvet do? • During the week of Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon we recycle as much as possible. Everything from cups to forgotten clothes are taken care of. • The food served to volunteers and visitors is kept as environmentally friendly as possible. Among other things, the coffee, bananas and milk served after the finish line are ecological. Furthermore, the food served to volunteers is lacto-ovo vegetarian and disposable packages are avoided as much as possible. 24 GÖTEBORGSVARVET MEDIA GUIDE 2018
• The electricity that is used during the event is 100% reusable and the track and field arena Friidrot- tens Hus and the organizer Gothenburg Track and Field Association’s office receive their electricity from wind power in collaboration with Göteborg Energi. • A big part of Göteborgsvarvet’s sustainability work is focused on transport. One example of a try to reduce the emmissions during the event is the establishment of an environment fee paid when parking on one of the parking lots around the event. The fee goes to the organization Gröna Bilister, which works for lower carbon dioxide emmissions in Gothenburg. Runners are also recommended to take the train instead of car or flight to Gothenburg. All the trips made by Göteborgsvarvet’s staff during the event are compiled and compensated for via Tricorona. • Göteborgsvarvet always tries to have a restrictive attitude against consumption, without making the quality of the event lower for that sake. All purchases are therefore made by a sustainably adapted environment policy. • This year, Göteborgsvarvet offers digital offers (”Varvetdeals”) to runners instead of plastic bags. What can the runners and visitors of Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon do? • Recycle their waste in the correct bin. • Choose an environmentally certified hotel, we recommend Gothia Towers which is close both to Göteborgsvarvet Expo and the event area of Göteborgsvarvet located in Slottsskogen. • Choose one of the lacto-ovo vegetarian food options that can be bought around the start- and goal area. • Take the bus (free public transport between Thursday and Saturday for runners), bicycle or walk during the week of Göteborgsvarvet. • Climate compensate for trips by car via Gröna Bilister.
