   Your Mission….

From Monday 29th June to Friday 10th July all Y7, Y8 and Y9
students will be taking part in a challenge yourself themed project.

Your mission is based on the theme of ‘Undercover Reporter’.

ONLY Y7 & Y8: You should pick four subject areas from the
list below and attempt their task(s). It is suggested that you complete REPORTER
two in the first week, and hand them in, and two in the second week.

ONLY Y9: You should do the English, Maths and Science task(s) plus
your bridging work for your option subjects. Remember you have two weeks to
complete the tasks from this booklet.

Each page is dedicated to a subject area and will give you instruction for what to do.
Many subjects have options so please ensure you read carefully. You should hand in
the work to your normal subject teacher and some subjects will post additional
instructions on SMHW where required.

If you have any questions or queries you should contact your normal teacher of that
subject area or the contact included on the page in this booklet.

This is supposed to be fun and a bit different to the usual work you have been set so
embrace the challenge and enjoy it!

Research, explore and plan for a brand-new
restaurant that is based around the theme of
‘SPIES’. In order to plan the restaurant and
menu successfully you will need to conduct REPORTER
extensive research into all aspects of serving
                    food to the public.

Suggested Tasks To Guide You (you should complete at least 5 of these tasks):
• Use at least 3 different websites to research the chosen theme – of food in disguise. Foods that look like other foods.
You could look at Heston Blumenthal’s - Christmas feasts. He creates dishes that taste completely different to their
     appearance.
• Make a dish that looks like another food for example a burger birthday cake or bread rolls to look like fruit.
• Create a spider diagram of some of the key things you would need to research before setting up a restaurant – front of
     house and in the kitchen.
• Design a meal for your favourite spy. Draw out the dish, add colour and notes to explain what each food is and how it
relates to the spy you have chosen.
• Draw the front of your new Spy restaurant.
• Design a menu for the “Spy” Restaurant. The food should fit the theme you have decided on. It might be around a
particular culture or based on a spy film. Aim for 3 starters, 6 mains and 3 desserts.
• Make one or some of the dishes from your Spy restaurant menu and ask your family to review your food.
• As a food critic write a review of your Spy dish, in the third person. Be positive, but critical about the dish you
produced. Describe its Appearance, taste, textures and aroma (smell).
• Write an advert to promote the opening of your new restaurant. Explain what dishes you will offer, any promotions
you have on whether you will offer take away as well as eat in and the opening times
• You are a mystery shopper who has been given the task of reviewing the quality of food and service, of 3 take away
restaurants in your area. Describe how easy it was to order, the speed of preparation, Ease of collection or delivery,
the presentation of the food, the quality of taste, texture, aroma of the dishes you ordered. Which restaurant would
you recommend and why? What good practice could you use in your “Spy” restaurant
• Make a list of all the checks a food health inspector would check if they came to your restaurant. Think about
temperature of fridges and freezers, routine cleaning, personal hygiene, use by dates.
• Test your food safety knowledge on this quiz: https://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk/search-results?q=food+poisoning
• Investigate “hidden sugars”. Produce a PowerPoint to explain what the term means, what hidden sugars are and where
they could be found. Explain how a shopper could look out for them.
• Using the “explore food” nutritional analysis, input your ingredients into the spreadsheet to show what nutrients are
     contained in your dish.
You will need to have your ingredients listed in grams. http://explorefood.foodafactoflife.org.uk/
• Try this interactive quiz: https://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk/11-14-years/where-food-comes-from/interactive-

• Find out where your food will come from by making a list of the origins of your main ingredients. Calculate the food
     miles. https://www.foodmiles.com/
• Explain how you could reduce the food miles in your dish and therefore reduce its carbon footprint.

been asked to work undercover in Pyongyang as an event

undercover job is to organise embassy events with business
people, aid charities and government officials in North Korea REPORTER
through the embassy. The meetings need to be organised so
they do not insult the locals and follow North Korea’s STRICT
rules and culture. These are very important. No one can be
                     allowed to lose ‘face’.
You mission is to research the culture of North Korea and
present it as a checklist to your team of agents so they know
how to operate, when trying to gather intelligence at these

                                          when collecting intel.
1. The history of the North Korea Since 1939.
        a. (What happened during WW2? What happened in 1950 with the USA

             Jong-un different?)
3. What are the rules that North Koreans have to live under?
        a. (e.g. forced military service, pictures in every room, school’s sports
             day activities)
4. North Korean has surprising wealth in natural resources such as oil, coal and minerals. What are
the main goods traded with other countries? What are the jobs and wealth like for the average
North Korean?
5. What are North Korea achievements at? (e.g. nuclear power stations and weapons, include fake
achievements, (like how many times they have won the world cup!))
6. Summarise some of the problems/dangers of North Korea’s regime
        a. (E.g. the famines, the censorship, the brainwashing media, the concentration camps, the
executions, the punishments if North Koreans flee the country)

How likely is it that North Korean will invade South Korea? It is a nuclear power, with a huge, well-
armed, fanatical army. What would happen if it did happen? What other countries would get
involved and how? (USA, UK, China, Japan?).

                                               Easy
• Design a poster to advertise your new spy movie.
• Create a playlist of music that shows your spy movie music research on Spotify/iTunes etc.
• Create some sound FX that could be used in a spy movie using household objects.
• Watch scenes from at least 3 different spy movies to research spy music in movies (think James Bond,
      Spy Kids, Bourne Identity etc.)
                                                Intermediate
• Create a PowerPoint that storyboards your movie scene to match your music
• Research how a composer creates a new film score (look at Hans Zimmer/John Barry/John Williams) -
present the findings in a podcast or audio recording.
• Create a spider diagram of some of the key instrument you noticed were used and how they were used.
• Design an album cover for the soundtrack ready to be released.
                                                    Advanced
• Compose your own pop song with lyrics to be the theme song for the movie (e.g. every bond movie has its
    own theme song)
• Compose a 30 second piece of music on edu.bandlab.com to go with a specific scene (e.g.
    chase/creeping/death/intro scene)
• Create a spider diagram of some of the key musical elements you found out from your research.
• Make a graphic score that maps your music (google graphic score for help on this – it doesn’t have to be
    super detailed)

                                           UNDERCOVER TALENT SPOTTER / SCOUT
You are a talent spotter/scout working for your favourite professional sports team. Your manager approaches you and
asks you to go undercover and write a detailed analysis on one of your opponents and their strengths and weaknesses
ready for the next match/game. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, you are unable to go out and actually
physically watch the matches/games and performers live! Instead you are going to have to do any research on the
opponents via video analysis, i.e. YouTube, Dailymotion etc.
Things the manager would like to see include:
                                         • The opposition’s strengths as a team
                                        • The opposition’s weaknesses as a team
                      • Any of their star players and their own individual strengths and weaknesses
                                          • Any tactics that the opposition use
  • Any statistics that might be worth considering (record when playing at home, record when playing away, record at
                                        certain grounds/stadiums/arenas/venues etc)

How you can complete the task:
          • Any sport is fine – team sports such as football, netball, volleyball, basketball, swimming are great, but so are
individual sports like tennis, swimming etc.
         • Use YouTube, Dailymotion etc to find a suitable video for you to watch someone perform – ideally it should be
around 20mins so that you can collect lots of data/make lots of judgements
 • Pick any team to watch – try and write it about an opponent who might face your favourite team, but if you’d rather
you write it about your own/favourite team, that’s fine too!
 • Try and find clips of whole games to watch rather than just simply highlights – highlights usually only show the really
                                                       good (or really bad!) moments!
     • Present the report however you wish – you could write a written report, create a PowerPoint with different slides,
make a detailed and in-depth poster – anything is absolutely fine!
     • If you can use pictures, images, diagrams, table, charts etc to support some of the points you are making, great – if
you can use images from the video you are watching then even better!
                              • Email a member of the PE team if you are unsure or have any questions!

       Your RE Mission….

How much can something change and still be the same thing?
The city of Athens is in urgent need of an investigator with philosophical
credentials. The ship of Theseus been proudly displayed in our harbour for
centuries, but it may have been secretly replaced!
Theseus was a hero of Greek mythology and the supposed founder of
Athens, Theseus is said to have won several naval battles and defeated
several monsters, including the Minotaur. We display his ship to respect REPORTER
                               and remember.
However, over the centuries the wooden ship has decayed and worn down.
Every time a piece of the original was past its best it was removed and
stored in a museum and replaced with a new, stronger piece.
We are now forced to ask ourselves… If the ship on which Theseus sailed
has been so heavily repaired and nearly every part replaced, is it still the
same ship — and, if not, at what point did it stop being the same ship? Is
the ship in the museum the true one, or the one in the harbour?

Very simply, our question is: does A = B if the physical
parts of A are not the same as B?
Please write urgently to the city of Athens explaining the findings of your investigation. You should
explain which ship is the real ship of Theseus, the one in the harbour or the one in the museum. You
must back up and explain why your answer is correct, as well as justify why the other side is wrong.
Use diagrams and pictures if it helps with your explanation. The best investigators will interview their
friends and family to learn their opinions, so they can make an informed decision.
The sorts of ideas you might expect to hear include:
* Is the ship different the moment the first plank is replaced because any change would result in a
different ship?
* Is the ship different only when the last piece has been replaced because only then is there none of
the original ship left? Does that mean that when there is only one piece of the original ship left it is still
the old ship?
* If it suddenly changed, or if it changes gradually, does this effect your answer?
* If the materials it’s made of change, but the shape, the name and the design stay the same, is it the
same ship?
* It is the same ship if other people think it’s the same ship? Is it just a matter of opinion?
Our sources tell us previous investigators have attempted to solve this with no luck. Below are links to
previous reports that might help you in your intellectual sleuthing.
