Foreword Dear Year 11 students, We understand that many of you will be feeling apprehensive about the weeks ahead. Please be assured that whilst we cannot make the assessments you will sit easier, we can support you with your preparation within the guidance provided. As you are already aware, we have planned to run classroom based assessments between 26th April and 14th May. This will allow plenty of time for in-class support, independent revision at home and the opportunity to follow up on any concerns arising from individual circumstances. We will also make sure that access arrangements are in place for those students who are entitled. Please note that we may have to extend the assessment window by a fortnight for some students where special circumstances mean we need further evidence. This will be by special arrangement with individual students. We hope that this booklet will provide you with further information so that you can prioritise your revision in each subject and make use of the resources each subject is recommending for you. The assessments need to be fair and robust and it is really important that you prepare well so that you are able to provide clear evidence of what you know, understand and can do. In this booklet you will find; • Arrangements for Easter revision classes • Guidance on how to prepare well for the assessments • Information from each subject on which topics to prioritise for revision and recommended revision resources. We will write to you again, once the Exam board materials have been published, with clarification on the final process for the awarding of grades this year. The most important thing for you to remember is that we will be doing all we can to support you. Listen to, and act upon, your teacher’s advice and help yourself by making use of the guidance to revise well independently. We wish you every success in the assessments. Mr Hacker (Principal)
Easter Revision sessions There are a number of revision sessions running over the second week of the Easter holidays. These sessions are voluntary and students can attend some or all of the sessions. Sessions are open to all students unless specified otherwise. Consent forms, sent out via the MyEd App, must be completed and returned by Monday 29th March 2021. Key Points • Students do not need to wear their school uniform but should ensure that they are suitably dressed. • Sessions will run according to the timings of the normal school day. • Students should enter school via the main reception, sign in and wait in the Atrium for their teacher to collect them at the session start time. • Students should use the Expression toilets only. • If Students are on site over lunchtime they need to remain in classrooms in the Expression Zone • There will be no food available to buy on site so please bring any lunch / snacks / drinks with you. • Once students have completed their sessions they should sign out and leave via the main entrance.

Exam Board Assessments Assessment materials are due to be published by the end of March and will be based on the work students have covered only. The performance of students in these assessments should form the starting point of the final grade awarded - i.e. this grade should form the baseline from which other assessment pieces contribute. It should be exceptional to have a final grade awarded that is more than a grade away from what the examination board material would suggest. At Co-op Academy Walkden, the window for classroom based assessments will be 26th April to 14th May (3 weeks). Students should presume that there may be an assessed element in every lesson during this time. Class Charts will be used to post specific information about the preparation at home for each lesson. Students will be appropriately supported in lessons for those assessed elements.
Preparation Remember all of the work we have done on revision strategies and use the three step process. Miniaturise Look over your notes for any given topic and pull out the key points. Remember to abbreviate, use symbols, arrows, pictures to make the key points memorable. Have you tried the method of Cornell Note taking? It is a simple and effective way of taking notes in any subject. Want to know more? Click on the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLtM3pa9_SQ
Produce We know that simply reading or highlighting our notes is ineffective so the next step is to use The Production Effect. This is where we produce revision resources using our miniaturized notes. This could be: • A mind map • A knowledge organiser • A set of question and answer cards • Cue cards containing key words or concepts. We also know that our brain can remember colours and pictures far more easily than words so use this knowledge when producing your resources. Retrieve This is a really important step in the revision process. This is where you can see what your memory has retained and put it to the test. You should now complete past questions and exam style questions to test your knowledge. Try to recreate the conditions you will face in the assessments; limit your time and do not allow yourself access to your notes. Then evaluate how you did. What areas are you confident in? Are there any key points you need to return to? If so go back to step to, produce , and work on that concept again.
The Logistics How long do you revise for at any one time? • Half an hour? • An hour? • More? Research tells us that you should revise for your chronological age plus / minus 2. So ,if you are 15 then your maximum revision time should be 17 minutes. Then you need a break. All researchers agree that approximately 30 minutes is the maximum before a short break is needed. However... By a break we mean grab a quick drink and back to it not a break of two hours on your XBox! Why? We know that you learn the most at the beginning and the end of any revision session. So imagine you study for one hour. One hour Now imagine you split that hour into 3 x 20 minute sessions. You will therefore have 3 session beginnings and 3 session endings and will have gone from 2 key learning points to 6! But remember short minute breaks only! After an hour then take a longer break.
Reflect, Revisit, Revise Images taken from: elearningindustry.com and https://medium.com/@WeAreHowDoI/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-curve- of-forgetting-dff1bb3e6d26. Do you remember this image? This image shows us how much content we remember if we only ever look at it once. The implications of this are so significant for our revision process. If we return to the material on more than one occasion then our retention significantly increases.
So when revising, alternate your subjects and the content you study and build in opportunities to return to the material. If you want more information, all of this is available on our school intranet. https://walkden.coopacademies.co.uk/ks4-knowledge-organisers/ https://walkden.coopacademies.co.uk/exams-information/ Taking Care of Yourself It is really important to take care of yourself. Pace your revision and make sure you still find time to do what you enjoy, whether that is chatting to your friends or the latest game. More information on pastoral support can be found here https://walkden. coopacademies.co.uk/students/pastoral-care/
