Preface
 • The book is based on a detailed Computer Science syllabus that has been reviewed by many
experts. This syllabus is available for download at http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/~sri/papers/CMC-
     curriculum-03June2013.pdf.
 • The main objective of this series is to develop computer fluency and thinking process skills
     of students.
 • Fun is an important element of learning. The books in this series explicitly integrate playfulness
as a basis for learning activities.
 • The lesson contents are woven around the two conversations between an imaginary facilitator
and two students. The facilitator mostly asks questions that guide the students to discover and
learn topics on their own. It is not necessary that the facilitator does a role play to recreate the
story in every class. Rather, the narrative style is adopted to facilitate reading and consequently
     learning by the student.
 • Each lesson focuses on specific concepts and associated skills. These concepts are selected such
that: (i) They lay a strong foundation for learning computers. (ii) They contribute towards
general intellectual development, and (iii) They are age appropriate.
 • The Worksheets and Activities are designed in such a way that they supplement topics being
covered in other subjects, as much as possible. Group activities are included in each lesson to
encourage collaborative learning. Projects are also suggested to reinforce the learning across
     multiple lessons.
 • 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity are addressed
in the lesson content and supplementary activities.
 • Tips to healthy computer practices are included in the lesson content and supplementary activities.
 • The lessons and activities are based on many free and open source software as well.
 • The book includes child-friendly illustrations that are sensitive to body image and gender issues.
 • Each lesson has a Facilitator’s Corner section, which gives a lesson plan outline, some dos
and don’ts, and pointers for when each worksheet has to be given to students. Any facilitator
(teachers/parents/others) can refer to the Facilitator’s Corner.
 • Each book has a Glossary page at the end explaining all the key technical terms covered in the book.
 • The book meets the standards suggested for Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation
     (Right to Education).

Computer Masti has been designed and created at Computer Science and
                           Engineering Department at IIT Bombay.

2. Explain the factors which resulted in the inventions of devices like Napier bones, slide rule in the 16th century.

Explorations of various continents and trading brought in the requirements of precise
calculations of sea routes, accounting, planetary positions, and navigational tables in the 16th
century. Mechanical devices were also developed to assist in tedious and repetitive calculations
like generating calendars of a year, taxing and trading. These are the factors which resulted in
the inventions of devices like Napier bones, slide rule in the 16th century.

    C. i, iii and iv
    D. i, ii and iv

  b. Which of the following pairs is correct?

      i. XMind - Brainstorming
     ii. LibreImpress - Word processing

     B. i,ii and iv
     C. ii, iii and iv
     D. i,iii and iv

  c. Find the odd one out from the following software and give reason for it.
      i. GIMP
     ii. MS Excel
    iii. Audacity
     iv. Mozilla Firefox

Rest all are FOSS based tools and applications.

2. What do you think are the benefits of using FOSS tools for students?
FOSS provides students with the option to use software which is free of cost. It also enables students to share
and distribute the software with their friends. Students can also understand how the software works as the
source code used to develop the software is freely available. They can study the software’s functionality and
aim to improve its working or add more features. They can share their knowledge using FOSS and build a
thriving community of learners where knowledge is created and shared.

3. How would you install the different FOSS applications?
FOSS applications are freely available on the Internet in a downloadable format. You can search for the
software using its name or search terms such as foss tools and the purpose of the application; for eg foss tools
for desktop publishing. It’s better to download the software either from the software’s website or from a
reputed download platform such as sourceforge.net and en.softonic.com You can refer to the documentation
available on these websites about the steps to install the application. Once the software executable file is
downloaded, you can run it by which the application auto-installs on the system.

Level 7 Lesson 9 WORKSHEETS

4. Where would you look for more information about documentation and troubleshooting for FOSS tools?
Most FOSS tools and application have documentation available on the website homepage for:
   Usage of features
   • Other help links that can be searched for are: tutorials, sample problems and solutions and application
     output samples.
   • Some applications may also provide the documentation under the Help menu.
   Troubleshooting
   • For clarifications on application, Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section is generally available at the
     application website.
   • Queries can be uploaded at user forums of the application.

5. State the freedoms associated with using FOSS tools? Compare the freedoms with the restrictions associated
with proprietary tools and software. In your opinion what are the long term benefits of using FOSS?
Free software is about the users’ freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More
precisely, it means that the program’s users have the four essential freedoms:
Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.
Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish. Access to
the source code is essential for this. Providing access to the source code is called Open Source.
Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom 3: The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. By doing this you can give the
whole community a chance to benefit from your changes.

For the comparison state the pros and cons from the end user point of view.
  Pros for using FOSS tools
  • Provides universal access for all users
  • Can be downloaded and distributed
  • Helps save cost and expenses
  • Can be customized to suit user requirements
  • Easy access to support through forums and discussion boards
  Cons
  • Updates depend on number of users

  Cons for using proprietary software
  • Expensive
  • Restrictions on how the software can be used
  • Available to limited number of users as per the cost
  • Support is easy to access though requires additional cost
  Pros
  • Newer versions available at regular intervals

Long-term benefit of using FOSS tools:
Example: A dynamic community of software users and developers which helps in evolution of the software as per
user requirements wherein all stakeholders are involved.
