Your Guide to Masks
Updated Apr. 6, 2021 Print

CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around
other people. E ective February 2, 2021, masks are required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public
transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.

How to Select
When selecting a mask, there are many choices. Here are some do’s and don’ts.

DO choose masks that DO NOT choose masks that

Have two or more layers of washable, Are made of fabric that makes it hard
breathable fabric to breathe, for example, vinyl

                       Completely cover your nose and
                       mouth
Have exhalation valves or vents which
                                                                                         allow virus particles to escape

Fit snugly against the sides of your face
                       and don’t have gaps

                                                                                         Are prioritized for healthcare workers,
                                                                                         including N95 respirators

Have a nose wire to prevent air from
leaking out of the top of the mask

  Special Considerations

  Gaiters & face shields

Wear a gaiter with two layers, or fold it Not recommended: Evaluation of face
to make two layers shields is ongoing, but e ectiveness is

Children

                                           around the sides

  Cold weather gear

Wear your scarf, ski mask or balaclava Scarves, ski masks and balaclavas are
over your mask not substitutes for masks

Other ways to improve t

Use a mask tter or brace. Wear one disposable mask underneath a cloth mask that

For people with beards that are not trimmed close to the face, masks may t loosely around the beard. However, people with

  Know how it spreads
                          • The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
                          • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
» Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
» Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes
                                or talks.
» These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or
possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
» COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

  Everyone should
  Clean your hands often
                          • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after
you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
                          • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at
least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until
                            they feel dry.
                          • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  Avoid close contact
                          • Limit contact with people who don’t live in your household as much
                            as possible.
                          • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
                          • Put distance between yourself and other people.
» Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread virus.
» This is especially important for people who are at increased risk for severe

Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others
                      • You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick.
                      • Everyone should wear a mask in public settings and when around people not
living in their household, especially when social distancing is difficult to maintain.
» Masks should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has
trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove
                             the mask without assistance.
                      • A mask helps prevent a person who is sick from spreading the virus to others,
and offers some protection to the wearer as well.
                      • Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker.
                      • Continue to keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others. The mask is not a
                        substitute for social distancing.

Cover coughs and sneezes
                  • Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or
use the inside of your elbow.
                  • Throw used tissues in the trash.
                  • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If
soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that
                    contains at least 60% alcohol.

Clean and disinfect
                  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables,
doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets,
                    faucets, and sinks. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/

                  • If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior
                    to disinfection.
                  • Then, use a household disinfectant. You can see a list of EPA-registered
                    household disinfectants here.

    Implementing CDC Guidance

Effective May 19, New York has adopted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “Interim Public Health
Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People,” issued May 13, for most businesses and public settings.
Businesses are authorized to require masks and six feet of social distancing for employees and/or patrons within their establishments
OR adhere to CDC guidance, which advises that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or be socially distanced, but
unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks and be socially distanced in most settings.*
• The Department of Health strongly recommends masks and six feet of social distancing in indoor settings where vaccination status
of individuals is unknown. Any mask requirements that businesses choose to implement must adhere to all applicable federal and
state laws and regulations (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act)
• *This provision applies across most commercial settings, including but not limited to retail, food services, offices, gyms and fitness
centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops and other personal care services, among other settings.
However, Pre-K to 12 schools, public transit, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, nursing homes, and healthcare settings are
exempt and must continue to follow the State's existing COVID-19 health guidelines until more New Yorkers are fully vaccinated.
