HEALTH and SAFETY GUIDELINES Souderton Area Community Education will be offering a variety of in-person evening classes this Winter-Spring semester. All classes will follow the current District Health & Safety guidelines found here: HEALTH and SAFETY PLAN Class size will be limited to allow for appropriate social-distancing. Arts Avenue Painting: Introduction to Oil Paint! NEW Alexandra Schnabel Tuesday 2/8-2/22 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B116 $40 Students will learn the basics of painting with oil paints and gain familiarity with brush stroke, color mixing, composition, texture and handling of paint. You will create three paintings over three sessions of one single still life, beginning our exploration with an approach called Alla Prima painting, known as the “wet on wet” approach, or direct painting. Generally, Alla Prima paintings are completed in one session- a fantastic way to gain quick experience! Get ready to witness yourself grow and understand visual elements more with each session. Material fee of $20 payable in class to instructor. Gold Card $30 Drawing: Chalk Pastels and a Bouquet of Flowers NEW Alexandra Schnabel Tuesday 3/22-4/5 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B116 $40 Come experience a drawing method with many approaches and lots of room for freedom and exploration- chalk pastels! Using this wonderful medium in between drawing and painting, we’ll create expressive imagery with partial abstraction of our subject matter—a vibrant bouquet of flowers. Over three sessions, we will work with different techniques of chalk pastel and learn about color and mark- making in the process. Material fee of $15 payable in class to instructor. Gold Card $30 Painting: Watercolor NEW Alexandra Schnabel Tuesday 3/1-3/15 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B116 $40 In this class, we’ll explore the possibilities of watercolors and image construction, combining watercolor with pen and ink in order to learn about the subject we are painting and further our depiction of it. Students will become comfortable with comprehending lights and darks by diluting paint, understanding colors through layering and mixing of pigments and testing out different application processes. We’ll learn about different types of watercolor paper and techniques as we complete one watercolor painting per week, with differing subject matter and style. Drawing: Landscapes like Van Gogh NEW Alexandra Schnabel Tuesday 4/19, 4/26 2 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B116 $30 Painting landscapes is a wonderful way to celebrate the natural beauty of the world and become familiar with where art and nature coincide! Vincent van Gogh was wonderful at expressive landscape work and we can draw lots of inspiration from his work. During this two-session course, we will enjoy the beautiful sky and view from our classroom. Using chalk pastels, we’ll learn about mark making, capturing light and shadow and finding color. Our first class will focus on landscape handling and begin working on our image which we will finish in the second class.. Material fee of $15 payable in class to instructor. Gold Card $25 Creative Crafts Sewing: Rag-Time Quilt Brenda Taipale Tuesday 3/1-3/15 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B110 $36 If you can sew a straight line, you can make a rag quilt! You can make a charming, super cozy quilt without putting in a ton of time or — wait for it — even really knowing how to quilt? It’s shocking, but true. Rag quilts aren’t actually made of….. rags. Rather, they get their name from having exposed seams between patchwork squares, which are snipped and frayed to create a “raggedy” look. If you think you can't sew, this incredibly easy rag quilt will prove you wrong. Simple to learn, forgiving and beautiful. You'll be glad you tried! Supply list emailed before the start of class. Gold Card $30 Sewing: Pajama Pants Brenda Taipale Tuesday 2/15, 2/22 2 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B110 $30 Nothing says cozy like pajama pants! In this fun beginner class, you’ll learn to sew a pair of PJ pants from start to finish. It’s an easy project for new sewers. No need to have 5
any experience sewing clothing, but basic machine-sewing skills are required. You will complete this project by the end of the session. Bring your own machine to class. Gold Card $25 Designer Greeting Cards April Stoudt Monday 4/4, 4/25, 5/2 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM IVMS B09 $40 OR Tuesday 4/5, 4/26, 5/3 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM IVMS B09 $40 Create beautiful handmade greeting cards while learning the art of rubber stamping. Each week you will make four cards while learning new techniques. You will make a selection of cards for a variety of occasions, including birthdays, thank you’s and holidays. This class is for both beginners and those with experience. Material fee of $15 payable in class to instructor. Bring your favorite adhesive, all other materials will be provided. In class you will learn the basics: the slip knot, how to cast on, the knit and purl stitch and how to bind off. We will discuss yarns and reading a yarn label. Bring size 8 knitting needles, one skein worsted weight yarn, solid and light in color. Beginners and those with some experience welcome. Enjoy an informal, relaxed night of knitting and purling, laughing and sharing stories. Knitters of all skill levels can come together to inspire and encourage, teach and learn, motivate and support others. Group will meet on the second Monday of each month. Learn Diamond Painting basics while creating fun, small crafts to share or enjoy yourself. Become familiar with the tools, glues, using special drills, placing the gems. Gather tips for working large canvases, freestyle projects and framing options. Reduce stress and improve concentration while relaxing your brain creating with others. Time will be set aside during each class to work on your projects. A $10 materials fee including a full kit, glue and drills, will be collected at the first class. Diamond Painting adds a glossy glow to a Friends Night Out. Relax while working on freestyle projects such as a keychain, ornament, 5-D kit or out- of-the-box ideas using spare gems. Improve your concentration, reduce Stress and pick up tips and tricks for taking Diamond Painting beyond the canvas. Time will be set aside each class to work on your projects. Crochet for Beginners Lisa S. Burger Wednesday 2/2-2/16 3 Sessions 6:30-8:30PM SAHS B108 $36 Learn the basics of how to crochet starting at the very beginning. In class you will learn how to hold a crochet hook, how to make a slip knot and crochet a chain stitch, along with the single and double crochet. Family Self-Defense (Parent & One Child) Mark Cashatt Thursday 2/3 1 Session 6:30-7:15PM IVMS Cafeteria $25 This is a basic self-defense class geared towards families with children age six and up. There will be instruction in the do’s and don’ts with simple avoidance tactics and blocking. Master instructor Mark Cashatt, 8th Degree Black Belt, will lead the class and make it fun, exciting and educational for every member of the family. Participants will learn the “frontal 5” and “dirty ½ dozen” self-defense routines along with tips on staying safe. Mindfulness for Everyday Life NEW Nicole Tuohey, MSW, LSW Thursday 3/17, 3/24 2 Sessions 6:30-7:30PM SAHS B110 $30 Mindfulness and meditation practices have been found useful and effective to help with building awareness, reducing emotional reactivity and helping people to relax. This course will help teach ways to integrate mindfulness techniques and meditative practices into a daily or weekly routine. It will hep participants to think of unique ways to utilize practices as “mind exercises” for wellness in everyday living. The cardio section will include a variety of heart conditioning exercises. We will also focus on developing core strength and stability in abdominals, hips and lower back. Aquatics All Aquatics programs are dependent on Montgomery County Department of Health and SASD Safety guidelines at the time of classes. All participants will follow the guidelines in place. Students are required to complete all 30 hours to receive a certificate. Instructors will also focus on defensive driving techniques and managing distractions while behind the wheel. This class fulfills insurance company standards for driver education classroom theory. To register, students must be 16 or turn 16 by the end of class. All Souderton Area School District rules and regulations are enforced by SACE. Hospitalization/Insurance is the responsibility of every Community Education Participant. Gold Card Policy: All residents of the SASD who are 62 years of age or older are eligible to receive a Gold Card.
