Policies Enrollment: Enroll online for any course at www.tulsaparks.org or in person at WaterWorks Art Center. We encourage you to enroll in courses early, as they have a limited number of spaces. If a course becomes full we can place those still interested on a waitlist. Courses are available to persons 16 years of age or older unless otherwise noted. Programs not meeting minimum enrollment prior to their start date will be cancelled and some programs may have an enrollment deadline that can result in late enrollment fees. Cost and Payment: Advanced registration for classes is required. Payments can be made online or in person, and we accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards, check, or cash. If paying in cash, exact change is required. Make all checks payable to the City of Tulsa. Materials or kit fees are paid to instructors on the first day of class. Tuition covers all necessary tools and supplies unless otherwise noted. A supply list will be provided to students when needed. A 25% fee will be added to all rental and programming prices for residents living outside City of Tulsa limits, but senior citizen discounts, scholarships, and non profit rates are available for some programs and services. Speak with a park staff member for more details. ID Cards: All patrons ages 10 and older must obtain a free Tulsa Parks ID card to participate in activities. Membership cards will be issued upon enrollment if registering in person. If enrolling online, membership cards can be picked up on your first day of class at the front desk. Check in using your membership card with each visit. Attendance: Tuition and fees are for the entire course, regardless of attendance. Students must attend the first day of class or contact us prior to the class meeting, otherwise they will be unenrolled with no refund or credit issued. Program Change: Changes to programs are made based on current enrollment numbers, health and safety concerns or when needed by the instructor. This can result in a change of day or time of program, as well as location, class size, changes or restrictions in program content or even cancellation of the program. When a change to a class is made, we will contact all enrolled participants with information about the change as soon as possible. If a participant no longer wants to attend the changed class, a refund or in-house credit is available. Credits & Refunds: If a student withdraws prior to the class date, a credit or refund will be issued. Credits are useable at any Tulsa Parks locations. Refunds are issued via check and will be mailed to the recipient. Health & Safety: The City of Tulsa’s Park and Recreation Department remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of our staff and residents during the current COVID-19 pandemic and continues to consult with the Tulsa Health Department and CDC guidelines. Please note the following temporary practices and protocols are in place at our center: Building hours and programs are subject to change in response to health guidance and protocols, including additional restrictions, rescheduling and/or cancellations. Online registration is available at www.tulsaparks.org and is the preferred method of enrollment and payment for all programs and events to reduce your wait time and increase safety. Tulsa Parks will continue requiring all staff and residents (ages 4 and older) to wear a face covering while inside any of community or recreation facilities regardless of their vaccination status or activity participating in unless otherwise notified by Tulsa Parks staff. Each program will have a unique set of health and safety guidelines for the activity/event. Additional updates and policies will be communicated by center staff as well as posted online to our website and social media accounts. Empty Bowls Volunteer Workshop Two Sessions Available: $5 each WW26507.3 February 5 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. WW26508.3 February 26 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Empty Bowls is the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma's largest annual fundraiser. Their Hunger Awareness Dinner will be held on May 10, 2022. Each year, WaterWorks staff, artists and patrons donate their time and skills to make bowls for this worthy cause. Pre-pandemic, over 800 bowls were created at WaterWorks and provided to attendees of the Hunger Awareness Dinner. If you would like to participate this year, please sign up for either volunteer workshop to learn how to hand build and glaze the bowls. Registration is $5 and open to adults and children age 7 and up (must be accompanied by adult). All materials and equipment are provided. Students may keep one of their finished bowls and donate any additional pieces to the fundraiser through WaterWorks. Finished bowls may be picked up two weeks after the workshop date attended. 4
Birthday Art Parties Come celebrate birthdays with us! Art-themed parties are available for kids ages 6 and up. Each birthday party lasts approximately 1.5 hours (45 minutes for the art project and the remaining 45 minutes for guests to enjoy refreshments brought by the host family). Typical art projects include: acrylic painting on canvas; watercolor painting on paper; cards with ink stamping; and mixed media collage. WaterWorks Birthday Parties include: Use of the large studio space with tables and chairs Use of art supplies necessary to complete your take- home project An art instructor who guides guests through the art project 1 - 10 children: $100 (minimum) 11 - 20 children: $10/child (maximum 20 children*) *Covid-19 safety regulations must be followed at all times. Clay Classes All Clay Students must wear shoes with closed heels and toes Pottery Wheel 101 Instructor: Yusuf Etudaiye $130 · Two Classes Available: WW26500.3 · January 3 – February 28 · Mondays 6 – 8:30 p.m. WW26501.3 · January 4 – February 22 · Tuesdays 1 – 3:30 p.m. This eight-session class is designed for anyone interested in learning how to throw on the pottery wheel. After a comprehensive policies and procedures lecture, students learn clay-forming techniques and develop an understanding and appreciation for both the studio process and hand- craftsmanship including how to center clay on the wheel, make cylinders, and pull coffee mugs and bowls. Step-by-step instruction provides the basic how-to information needed to complete one or more glazed projects. Each student must purchase 25 lbs. of clay ($20); an optional basic clay toolset is available for $10. Introduction to Hand Building in Clay Instructor: Yusuf Etudaiye $100 · January 5 - February 9 · Wednesdays 1 – 3:30 p.m. Resident Teaching Artist Yusuf Etudaiye introduces students to hand building clay practices and equipment in our Clay Studio including the slab roller and extruders. Students learn basic hand building glazing techniques and create objects such as jewelry boxes, soap dispensers, and experiment with free-form sculpting as well. This is the perfect way to “get to know clay” and all are welcome in this six-session class. Glazes and firings are included in the tuition. Class Code: WW26504.3 One Love Two Hearts Clay Date Instructor: Yusuf Etudaiye $75/Couple · January 22 · Saturday 1 – 3 p.m. WaterWorks Art Center is a unique place to spend some quality time with that someone special! Learn a new skill, get creative and take home two handmade ceramic hearts to remember your great experience. Resident Teaching Artist, Yusuf Etudaiye, provides each couple step-by- step instruction to make the project and select the glaze that we will apply after your piece has dried and is bisque-fired. Glaze kiln firing completes the process and your work of art is ready to pick up on Valentine’s Day. Wear comfortable clothing or bring an apron/smock. All materials are provided. No previous experience is necessary – just come with an enthusiastic attitude and your date! Class Code: WW26505.3 Clay Date for Kids: Build a Giant Mug! Instructor: Hans Fichtenberg $45 · January 15 · Saturday Noon – 4 p.m. Kids age 7 and up with an attending adult can build a giant mug in this fun, hands-on clay workshop! Participants use slab-rolled clay and a cardboard cylinder form to construct the body of the mug and attach a handle. Then, using stencils, rubber stamps and other tools, personalized designs are added for a one-of-a-kind glaze-fired mug ready for pickup one week later at WaterWorks. The workshop fee is based on the number of mugs created so, simply sign up under one name if one child is assisted by an adult; if the adult also wants to create a mug as well as assist the child, sign up under two names. Jewelry, Metals & Glass Classes All Jewelry Students must wear shoes with closed heels and toes. Stone Set Cuff Bracelet Instructor: Jenny Bradley $45 · January 15 · Saturday Noon – 4 p.m. Develop foundational skills for jewelry-making through the creation of a bezel-set stone cuff. In this beginner-level course, students design and create bracelets by sawing, piercing and soldering metals. Each student receives a cabochon stone that is set as the centerpiece of the bracelet. A kit fee of $40 (payable to the WaterWorks Advisory by check or cash is accepted) provides materials to practice and make the final cuff bracelet in sterling silver. Tools are provided and shared. No prior jewelry experience necessary in this four-session class limited to six (6) students. All students must wear closed-toe shoes to participate in classes and open studio sessions held in the Jewelry/Metals Studio. Drawing, Painting & Printmaking Waxing Poetic Basics Workshop: Beginning Cold Wax & Oil Painting Instructor: Lori Roll $60 · January 21 · Friday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. This ancient medium using wax with oil pigments is gaining tremendous popularity in the United States and abroad. Learn the basics using this malleable medium to create layer, marks and personal artistic expression in this one-day workshop. Students new to cold oil and wax are introduced to the medium, materials and tools. The instructor demonstrates color mixing, applications and techniques. Students bring a roll of 1" painter's tape and a pad of Arches (or other brand) 9"x12" oil paper. Wear old clothes or an apron. All skill levels are welcome – no experience is necessary. This dynamic offering is limited to ten (10) participants to allow for individual attention and support. Class Code: WW26512.3 Waxing Poetic Intermediate/Advanced Workshop: Cold Wax & Oil Painting Instructor: Lori Roll $60 · January 28 · Friday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m If you have already taken a workshop in cold wax and oil painting, this workshop is for you! You’ve already got the basics and a general understanding of the endless possibilities of this malleable medium and you’re ready to explore and expand your repertoire. We refresh ourselves with the basics, gather inspiration from various sources and then we paint! Students explore techniques beyond the basics including the use of pigment sticks, collage and mixed media. The instructor demonstrates color mixing, applications and technique. Students bring a roll of 1" painter's tape and a pad of Arches (or other brand) 12” x 16”" oil paper. Wear old clothes or an apron. This dynamic offering is limited to ten (10) participants to allow for maximum individual attention and painting time. Class Code: WW26513.3 Colored Pencil Pet Portraits Instructor: Lee Anne Zeigler $50 · February 2 - 16 · Wednesdays 1 – 4 p.m. Bring your favorite photo of a beloved pet or any animal you like for this fun, stress-free adventure in capturing that image in colored pencil. Together, we explore how best to transfer your photo image to Stonehenge paper and discuss various methods of applying and removing color. Finishing techniques such as the use of fixatives, matting and framing will also be discussed. Colored pencil is a wonderfully relaxing medium and very portable, too. A basic supply list is provided to each enrolled student, but additional pencils may have to be purchased (or borrowed from the instructor) based on the photo you choose. Drawing, Painting & Printmaking Collage Compositions Workshop Instructors: Lori Roll and Lee Anne Zeigler $50 · February 4 · Friday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Using animal and nature templates, instructors work with students to create an artful collage. Students bring a 16” x 20” canvas board for collage and any favorite papers or collage materials. Materials provided include handmade and commercial printed papers, found items, and interesting tidbits. All skill levels are welcome – no previous experience is necessary to create an inspired collage composition. Wear old clothes to this messy, workshop. Bring a snack, if desired, to enjoy during the short break. Class Code: WW26515.3 Painting Snow Scenes in Pastel Instructor: Greg Stone, PSA $65 · February 8 - 22 · Tuesdays · 6 – 8:30 p.m. Winter provides many opportunities to create beautiful landscape paintings. Warm sunlight illumines banks of snow reflecting many more colors than we might imagine. Shadows appear in rich shades of blue and violet and evergreen trees provide warm contrasts to fresh snowfall. Students learn how to make full use of their pastel palette to represent the look and feel of winter in this class geared for beginner- and intermediate-level pastel painters. Many of the lessons may be applied to other media. Each student brings a good selection of soft pastels (not oil pastels) with a variety of values, colors and temperatures such as Richeson 40 Landscape™ or Richeson Handmade 24 Set™, a pack of UART™ sanded paper (any grit, but in light, not dark, colors), reference photos of winter scenes and a sketchbook, pencil and eraser. Are you confused about what to paint and how to paint it? This workshop is for you! Students learn to create unique and meaningful art beginning with a great concept. Fiber Arts & Textiles Traditional Woven Star Workshop Instructor: Laura Borders $45 · December 11 · Saturday 11 a.m.– 4 p.m. Woven from natural reed, students create a traditional 14” three- dimensional star which may be hung using ribbon, twine, beads or placed on a table or mounted to a wall. The instructor, Laura Borders, a Cherokee citizen and artist, guides students step-by-step through the construction process. No experience is necessary in this introductory workshop. A kit fee of $25 (payable to the instructor in cash at the beginning of the workshop) provides everything you need to create a traditional woven star. Elmer’s Glue-All™ is used in this project, so drying time is required during a short lunch break. Students may bring a sack lunch or snack and a beverage to enjoy at that time. No experience is necessary – all skill levels are welcome in this fun holiday season workshop. Class Code: WW26518.3 Two-Color Shibori Workshop Instructor: Gina Crowder Levesque $40 · December 18 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. A “make and take” workshop just in time for the holidays! Shibori is a Japanese surface design technique in which fabric is stitched or folded to resist the dye bath. In this one-day workshop, students explore the art of laying multiple colors to produce stunning effects. Each student takes home a sample book, a pair of socks and a bandana they have dyed during the workshop for a kit fee of $20 (payable to the instructor). Additional blank socks and bandanas may be purchased from the instructor, if desired. Students should wear old clothes or a dye apron. Rubber gloves (like those used for house cleaning) are desirable. The instructor will have a limited number of pairs for workshop use. No previous experience required – all skill levels are welcome. Class Code: WW26519.3 Beginning Cherokee Double-Wall Basket Weaving Workshop Instructor: Laura Borders $45 · January 8 · Saturday 11 a.m.– 4 p.m. Students create a Cherokee double-wall basket from natural reed with instruction from Cherokee citizen and artist, Laura Borders. She will demonstrate the mechanics of weaving a Cherokee basket. Then, each student creates their own unique basket with the option of using hand- dyed reeds to incorporate the element of color and design into their basket. No experience is necessary in this introductory workshop. A kit fee of $25 (payable to the instructor in cash at the beginning of the workshop) provides everything you need to create a small basket. No experience is necessary – all skill levels are welcome. NOTE: This is a wet process; students should bring a towel from home and perhaps an apron. Fiber Arts & Textiles Winter Weaving Studio Instructor: Lynn Tedder $110 · January 24 – February 28 · Mondays 1 – 4 p.m. Make your next weaving project uniquely your own by adapting a project from WaterWorks’ extensive collection of weaving patterns or using one of your own ideas. With instructor assistance, adapt, warp, and then weave the project to suit your vision on one of WaterWorks’ looms. Participants must have completed Weaving 201 or be able to read and interpret weavings drafts, wind a warp and warp a loom back-to-front in this six-week class limited to eight (8) participants. Instructor approval is required to enroll. Participants purchase their own yarns for the project they choose. Class Code: WW26521.3 Advanced Inkle Weaving Workshop Instructor: Gina Crowder Levesque $40 · January 29 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Students learn the art of inlaying words in this advanced-level inkle weaving workshop open to those already familiar with how to warp an inkle loom and basic inkle weaving techniques. Each student should come prepared with a name or short phrase to weave into a band. This project is perfect for gift giving! The instructor provides a loom, shuttle and warp for each student to use during the workshop. Each student takes home a finished band and helpful handouts for future inkle weaving. This workshop is limited to eight (8) students. A kit fee of $15 (payable to the instructor) covers all workshop materials. Class Code: WW26522.3 Silk Scarf Dyeing Workshop Instructor: Taylor Painter-Wolfe $35 · February 5 · Saturday Noon - 4 p.m. Dyeing silk is so easy and fun –it’s almost impossible to avoid creating something beautiful and luxurious! In this one-day workshop, students explore several different silk dyeing techniques including silk resist painting, ice dyeing and indigo dyeing. This is a great starting point for anyone brand new to creating fiber art and a wonderful opportunity to add new skills for those who already have experience with it. Participants leave with the knowledge of how to execute future silk dyeing projects on their own as well as multiple hand-dyed silk scarves – perfect for giving as a gift or adding a unique piece to one’s own wardrobe. All skill levels are welcome -- no prior experience is required to enjoy this workshop. A kit fee of $30 (payable to the instructor) provides all necessary materials. Fiber Arts & Textiles Introduction to Natural Dyes: Native and Historic Instructor: Gina Crowder Levesque $40 · February 12 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Learn the art and history of fabric dyeing using lightfast and colorfast natural dyes. Over 20 historic and native dyes are utilized in this workshop including indigo, cochineal and Osage orange. Students take home a notebook of recipes and yarn samples and are encouraged to bring small samples to drop into the dye pot. Wear old clothes or a dye apron in this workshop limited to twelve (12) students. A kit fee of $15 (payable to the instructor) covers all workshop materials. No previous experience is required – all skill levels are welcome. Class Code: WW26524.3 Hand Papermaking Workshop Instructors: Tom Conrad and Hans Fichtenberg $40 · February 19 · Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Handmade paper can be used to make cards, journals, or can be framed as its own work of art! Come learn the basic techniques of making paper by hand in this one-day workshop! We set up the pigmented paper pulp (made in our own Hollander Beater), provide dishpan mould-and-deckle sets and decorative objects such as dried botanicals and fiber -- everything one needs to create a dozen or more 7” x 9” sheets of paper. Students work in the large studio room and outdoor classroom and are encouraged to wear an apron and shoes suitable for standing on a wet concrete floor. At the end of the workshop, each student loads their handmade pages into a unique drying box. Students may pick up their dried handmade paper the following Tuesday at WaterWorks. Open Studio Policies Our facilities are available for use beyond our workshops and classes. Do you need more time to finish up class projects or dive more deeply into the material? Open Studio time is a great way to build a stronger art practice and nurture our artist community. For a daily Open Studio fee, you are welcome to access most work spaces for use of tools and equipment. Students must have completed a course (excludes one-day workshops) in the medium studio area to ensure safe use of materials and equipment. Release and waiver forms as well as policy & procedures documents must be signed by clay and metalsmithing/jewelry students and any other specialty workshops and/or special events as deemed necessary.
