Dear Parents and Carers A week into the new term and remote learning and we are very pleased to see that our students are becoming familiar with the new procedures and routines involved with this way of working. To support our students, we sent out a Remote Learning document this week explaining the Windsor Girls’ School expectations for working remotely and offering advice on how to organise study time both online and working independently. We hope that both students and parents will find this useful. Staff INSET this week was also focused on Remote Learning and Teaching. Staff looked at how to make the most effective use of platforms and tools for remote teaching so that we can offer the best experience for our students. Today (Friday) our Year 13s have been participating in Study Skills sessions which have run alongside their usual lessons. These sessions are aimed at improving these skills for working now and in the future. Next week we are very much looking forward to the first Community Week of the calendar year. Art Julian Opie Biography – Freya H 9EB Julian Opie was born in 1958 in London. He was raised in the city of Oxford and attended Magdalen College School, Oxford, from 1972 to 1977. Opie graduated in 1982 from Goldsmiths, University of London, where he was taught by conceptual artist and painter Michael Craig-Martin. He is now a sculptor and digital artist associated with the New British Sculpture Movement and he is best known for portraits that reduce subjects to essential lines and colour planes. Julian Opie artwork evaluation Bryan plays guitar was completed by Julian Opie in 2004. This piece of work is very bright and colourful. I think the artist is trying to create a happy feeling from this artwork because yellow is normally a happy and exciting colour. Also, by Bryan playing a guitar it might make people think of the sound of a guitar and music which usually picks people’s moods up and makes them feel better if they are down. I think the artist worked from memory as well as imagination. I think this because it could be a memory of someone playing a guitar but also imagination for the bright colours and way of drawing Bryan. This work makes me feel joyful because of the yellow which normally suggests being in a good mood. Paper heads was completed by Julian Opie in 2019. This piece of work is also very colourful with the different background colours. I think the artist is trying to give a feeling of equality with this piece of artwork as each picture shows women from different race or cultures, but they are all the same. I think the artist might have worked from memory but also maybe used photos. This work makes me feel happy and also that maybe there is hope that equality exists in our world and there is no racism or prejudice.
Art Karel Dujardin was born on September 27 th 1626 and died on November 20th 1678. He was a Dutch golden age painter. Although he did some images and artwork of spiritual subjects, most of his paintings are small Italianate panorama scenes with animals and peasants. Dujardin spent prolonged periods at the start and end of his career, in Italy. The paintings have a very orange tone and there are horses, dogs houses and people in both drawings. In one of them there’s a man laying on the floor with a horse next to him and dogs around him, there’s a mountain behind them and the sky is bright blue with a few clouds in it. In the other painting there are two women and one man sitting at a table next to a house that has vines on a section of the roof and there are two horses standing in front of the table. - Tilly Kemp, Year 9 EtonX If students already have an EtonX account, follow these steps: 1. Food and Nutrition We have two groups on rotation in Year 9 in Food. Over the last two weeks they have been learning about the following: Bread - understanding how to make bread and the functions of ingredients such yeast and gluten. They have then been asked to cook bread or pizza at home. Pastry - understanding different types of pastry, their properties and classic dishes made with each type of pastry. They have been asked to make puff pastry tarts at home. They have produced some lovely cooking.
Food and Nutrition Year 10 have been busy studying "Cereals" ready for a test next week. As part of that they have completed a risotto practical and will be cooking quiches in the next few days, to help them understand the versatility of cereal products. The Catering class are due to produce fruit tartlets - so look out for more pictures in future newsletters. Year 11 Caterers have been trialling dishes that they may want to cook in their practical exam on their return to school.
ICT ICT - Year 9 As we start the year in a lockdown situation we want to give the students a chance to explore Technology in a wider sense. With that in mind, we are using the iDEA programme from the Government, effectively a ‘Digital Duke of Edinburgh’, and standing for Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award. The portal has a wide range of badges that students can explore and it’s a great way to develop their skills and interests for the future – they are also recognised badges that can be included on CV’s, applications and platforms such as Unifrog in ‘Learning to Work’ and post 16 Education plans. We’ve asked the students to create an account using this site (https://idea.org.uk/x/WGS-2021) as it will link to the Windsor Girls’ School profile, then complete these badges: There are lots of badges covering all aspects of Technology and we’ve encouraged the students to explore them over the coming month. Computer Science – Year 10 To support the students during the lockdown period and beyond we have invested in a great third party platform called ‘Craig’n’Dave’ who provide videos, content and activities to develop learning. This month the students are exploring what causes performance issues on modern Networks – which is very appropriate in our new world of remote working with platforms such as Teams and Zoom. Computer Science – Year 11 To support the practical element of Component 2, the students are working through the online tutorials for the programming language Python on: https://www.w3schools.com/python/python_intro.asp This provides a great online way of progressing their knowledge and skills during remote learning.
MFL - Spanish Our students keep on learning and working hard during lockdown. Y12 are learning about the Direct Object pronouns. Working in pairs in the breakout rooms: Back together! Year 13
MFL - Spanish Year 10 are putting 90 word essay ideas together using present, past and future. They work in pairs or threes in the breakout rooms and then put it all together using the whiteboard. Year 11 are working on a translation about their daily routine in two breakout rooms. Foundation Higher And back together!
‘ MFL - Spanish And the completed work: Sociology This week Year 13 Sociology students have been studying the topic of secularisation. They have been looking at debates around the claim that religion is less influential in people’s lives today than it was in the past. They have considered the evidence to support the secularisation theory and also the evidence that challenges it. We have investigated the problems associated with research methods used to measure secularisation. Students have been encouraged to speak to elderly members of their family or friends to discover if their experience of religion is different e.g. was society more religious when they were growing up?, do people become more religious as they get older? We explored the impact of today’s global mass media on religion and the impact of the pandemic on religious practice. We have discussed the reasons for secularisation and the claim that, with industrialisation, science became the dominant belief system and replaced religion. As ever, Sociology proves such a topical and current subject and we have pondered the question of whether the rising distrust associated with science in recent decades will be overturned given the current pandemic and the hope that is being place in science and a vaccine. Year 12 Sociology students have started using Seneca Learning to support them in their remote learning. Tasks have been assigned on the topic of Families and Households completed before Christmas and this will be an excellent resource to assist students with revision of this topic. In our remote lessons we have been studying class differences in educational achievement and we have explored the reasons why some social classes do better than others in the education system. This week we have explored the argument that the home background is the most important influence on children’s educational attainment, in particular the way in which parents socialise children. Next week we will look at the impact of material factors, i.e. poverty, on children’s educational attainment. Again, the pandemic and current events present us with many opportunities for interesting discussion. We will make good use of current affairs to assist in our understanding of the topic e.g. government policies around free school meals and laptops for children during the pandemic.
Science Year 11 students have been learning about cloning techniques for plants and animals as they begin their remote learning journey. During their live lesson they learnt about plant tissue culture, embryo transplants and adult cell cloning. Optional extension work was provided and those students with a keen interest in Ethics have completed a newspaper style article that discusses the social and ethical issues around animal cloning. Lastly, some religions may agree with cloning, such as Islam. The Qur'an teaches the value of preserving human life, ‘whoever saves a life - it is as if he had saved humankind entirely’ (Qur'an 5:32). For this reason, many Muslims might consider that the benefits of lives saved by cloning cells or organs for medical reasons, mean cloning is morally acceptable. To conclude, cloning is beneficial because of the lives that can be saved, through organ donations, infertile people having a child and filling a void. However, cloning has been deemed as unethical due to religious reasons. Some people believe cloning interferes with God’s role as a creator and might interfere with the natural course of evolution or be misused by malevolent people. Christians believe God is the Designer and Craftsman of everything in the universe, and He created human beings a step above all the rest. By breathing His own life into that man, He created the man and woman “in His own image” (Genesis 1:27). That means that human beings are more like God than any other created thing.
