May 2020 Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo enjoys widespread MOTHER’S DAY Tea popularity across the United States, despite many Americans mistaking the Trolley holiday as Mexico’s Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo revelers take note! Mexico’s Independence Day is held on September 16. It commemorates the day in 1810 when a Catholic priest known as Father Hidalgo made a speech in the town of Dolores calling for independence from Spain. Hidalgo’s speech has since been called the “Cry of Dolores,” and the town is now known as Dolores Hidalgo. Cinco de Mayo commemorates a very different event on a date over 50 years later. He rounded up a group of 2,000 locals and fortified the town under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza. On May 5, 1862, Lorencez surrounded Puebla and began shelling the town with heavy artillery. Yet by nightfall, the French were forced to retreat, having lost 500 soldiers. Zaragoza’s victory at the Battle of Puebla was not a major one, but it was symbolic. Juárez’s government used the victory to rally support against the French. Five years later, the United States sided with Mexico against the French and put an end to the war. Americans celebrating Cinco de Mayo are not celebrating America’s successful intervention. It is more a general celebration of Mexican culture, fueled by the marketing influence of the beverage industry.

May 5, 2020 A Message from our C.E.O Families and Residents of PEI Seniors Homes, The team at PEI Seniors Homes is grateful for reaching May with no COVID-19 in our homes and being part of the Island community that has kept infection so limited. Across the province and around the world, many people want to return to normal. We are watching the slow and measured approach to easing restrictions, taking place outside of our homes. Some day we will see a return to more normal activities inside the homes but not soon. Last week the Provincial Government of PEI released its 4-phase plan to reduce restrictions and get the provincial economy and society from today to July. The steps they are taken are small and quantified. We watch and hope that these changes do not result in the community spread of COVID-19. Our staff are instructed to remain vigilant in their interactions inside and outside of work. Under Dr. Heather Morrison’s 4-phase PEI plan, there is no proposal of changes to the rules around long term care and the pandemic precautions now in place. For the next six to nine weeks, I expect no significant shift will happen in the activities and precautions inside nursing homes, including our homes. We are refining two plans at this time. We continue to enhance our infection control and outbreak plan. We expect any COVID-19 positive resident will be transferred to the QEH for care. Regardless, we have a plan in place for caring for any resident with or without COVID-19 in the event of an outbreak. Protocols for staff and contact tracing as also developed. Today we believe we have the proper precautions in place to maintain the physical health of our residents and staff. Any resident or staff member with the slightest chance of having COVID-19 is immediately tested, and all have been negative and COVID-19 free. Looking to the future, we are also planning for a return to what we call the New Normal. Our management teams are engaged in discussions around planning what precautions we could start to loosen in the coming months. For example, later this month, we may return to serving meals in our dining rooms. Residents will need to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet, as they currently do in our activities program. Social interaction is an essential part of a person’s health, and we work every day at improving this connection between residents, families and staff. Dr. Heather Morrison was asked last week, “what it would take to have all the protocols go back in place.” Her answer was simple – One case of COVID-19 in a nursing home. Our combined responsibility to protect our home’s residents and staff has never been greater. Any plan to return to a new normal is to be developed as a gradual and precise set of changes. The safety of our residents is the value that will guide us. Jason Lee CEO PEI Seniors Homes
