Meet the Team Running in Heels At Lakeside, our onsite team offer a professional and friendly approach to help with all aspects of managing your office space. Fabiha Hussain, our Apprentice Facilities Assistant, explains just how she helps support occupiers every day: What does your role entail? I am the ‘go to’ person for first line facilities issues. I look after the helpdesk which involves taking inbound calls and emails, qualifying the issue, logging it on our system and then assigning it to one of the FM team to manage. I also have a pet project which is the key auditing system. This started as an apprentice style challenge with a box of unmarked keys and a building full of locks – and has developed into my pride and glory! How long have you been here? Feature PREPARING FOR TAKE OFF Planning Your Lakeside is home to a range of companies – from start- ups and satellite offices to UK and global HQs. One thing Business Growth that connects most occupiers is that they are successful and growing businesses who chose Lakeside because it offers space to expand, whilst providing great facilities and amenities. Some of our occupiers moved here to enable expansion whilst others chose the Campus in the very early days so they could Managing Growth with CT Automotive be surrounded by inspirational businesses whilst growing. Using Risk to Create Growth with Verisona Law Signing a lease on office space in Autumn 2008 may have been a leap of faith, but so began the journey for newly merged firm Verisona Law. The company was one of the original handful of businesses to chose Lakeside, moving in when the Campus was in transition following IBM’s departure. Verisona Law was formed by the merger of two law practices in Havant and Waterlooville. The Directors chose Lakeside North Harbour which sat between the two former offices, an important cultural consideration when merging firms. The location offered a great backdrop, the opportunity to be alongside prospective commercial clients and gave potential for expansion. The Directors also felt the planned facilities would help them to compete with ‘big firms’ when attracting good staff. “We bought a vision of what Lakeside could “Lakeside was filling up around us. Working with other occupiers also allows them to ‘drop in’, and they do! Many of our private clients say it is easier to get here than to a high street office, the parking is plentiful and they can stop and have a coffee afterwards too.” From Garage to Greatness with Carrington West When technical recruitment agency Carrington West “The scenery, open space and facilities at Lakeside was formed in 2011, the partners aspired to have the are a really important part of our employment offer. offices they now call home. Thankfully one of our Check out the website for details on how occupiers’, Giant Leap’s Bill Mousdale, has shared some to submit any last minute entries. top tips to help set up and take a brilliant photo. Composition, composition, composition It’s important to compose any image - taking care to frame it exactly. Is there a central element that needs to fill the frame or is it about a foreground and background, e.g. a duck on the lake in the background with a ‘No Swimming’ sign in the foreground? If there is a lot of detail to the image, then don’t be afraid to pull the focus in tight. Abstract images create more discussion. If you’ve got people in the picture, make sure you can fit everyone in and don’t cut people’s heads off! Lights, camera, action Lighting is one of the fundamental aspects of creating the perfect shot. If you are using a DSLR camera, settings help manage the intake of light, but smart phones and devices offer fewer tools. Therefore try to make sure the light source is in the front of the subject matter (and behind you). Don’t take pictures directly into the sun or the result is simply glare and silhouettes. Most mobiles will allow you to set the flash to auto, and generally the camera will be able to determine whether the subject needs lighting or not. If you are trying to take a distance shot, remember that the lighting will change as you zoom in, as will the impact of tiny movements in the camera – zoom images might be grainier and slightly fuzzy for this reason.
Occupier News VERISONA LAW NURTURES LEGAL TALENT As the new academic year gets underway, Verisona Law, is delighted to be welcoming two students from the University of Portsmouth who will spend the next year gaining professional experience at the firm. Sarah Lawal, who will be working as a trainee paralegal, is clear about her motivations for seizing the opportunity: ‘I want to gain experience and understanding of how a law firm operates, so that when I come to apply for graduate schemes at the end of my degree, they know I can hit the ground running.’ James Woodhouse, who is studying Law with Business and will be assisting the firm’s highly respected Historic Abuse team, agrees: ‘I feel very fortunate. There were only a handful of placements available in Portsmouth and even fewer in law, so to have been University of Portsmouth law students Sarah Lawal and James Woodhouse, starting work given this opportunity is really exciting.’ on placements at Verisona Law ‘We are very proud to welcome Sarah and James to the firm,’ says Maria Hart, Chief Operations Officer at Verisona Law. ‘After the success of individuals who have taken on placements with us in previous years, we wanted to continue offering opportunities to support the next generation of legal talent.’ COULD YOU SUPPORT A YOUNG PERSON? The pair, which are 15 months old, have attracted lots of attention with many of our occupiers popping down in their breaks to get acquainted. The Atrium will be home to a collection bag for any unwanted plastic items, with TV screens across the Buildings playing host to screenings of A Plastic Ocean. There will also be Q&A sessions and the opportunity to buy reusable water bottles and other items. Look out on the Campus App and Facebook page for more details. PLASTIC FACTS • Globally, we are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year • A staggering 50% of plastic is for single-use purposes • More than 8 million tons of plastic leaks into the ocean each year (mainly from land sources) which equates to a truckload of plastic a minute • If just one in ten people in the UK refilled once a week, we’d have 340 million less plastic bottles a year in circulation.
