Services Advent Carol Service Sun, 28 November 2021, 15.00 We mark the start of the Advent season with the Cathedral’s Advent Carol Service, which brings together music, readings, and the lighting of candles, as we move from darkness to light in the expectation of Christ’s coming. St Nicholas Family Service Sun, 5 December 2021, 17.30 This short service for children and families is a joyful celebration of the story of St Nicholas and a chance to find out more about the original Santa Claus! Music is provided by local choirs and bands and the Canterbury Cathedral Girl Choristers. Choral Evensong with Carols Sun, 19 December 2021, 17.30 This service of Evensong with traditional Christmas Carols is a great way to begin the week leading up to Christmas and experience the spirit of Christmas at Canterbury.
The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral Carol Service Tue, 21 December 2021, 19.00 This short and traditional Carol Service by The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral is open to all. Our readings tell the Christmas story and music is provided by the Cathedral’s Boy Choristers, Lay Clerks, and Choral Scholars. Cathedral Carol Service Thu, 23 December 2021, 19.30 Fri, 24 December 2021, 15.00 (doors open 60 minutes before the service begins) Our main Cathedral Carol Services are one of the highlights of the Cathedral’s year. Music and readings tell the story of the birth of Christ in an atmospheric service with candlelight. Music is provided by all parts of our world-famous Cathedral Choir: Boy Choristers, Girl Choristers, and Lay Clerks. Family Crib Service Fri, 24 December 2021, 11.00 A joyful and informal service for children and families which tells the story of the birth of Jesus, with music from the Cathedral’s Boy Choristers and the singing of traditional Christmas Carols. Christmas Day Eucharist Sat, 25 December 2021, 11.00 Join the Most Reverend, Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury for our Christmas Day Eucharist.
Christingle Service Tue, 28 December 2021, 15.00 The annual Christingle service is a joyful celebration that brings families and communities together to share the light of Jesus and spread a message of hope. Each element of a Christingle has a special meaning and helps to tell the Christian story. You are also welcome to join our Christingle Workshop from 13.00 in the Community Studio to create your own Christingle to take to the service. Booking required via our website. Martyrdom of St Thomas of Canterbury Wed, 29 December 2021, 15.00 A very special Canterbury Cathedral tradition to mark the martyrdom of Canterbury’s most famous Saint. We gather for a candlelit service of medieval chant, processions, and readings as we mark the day on which St Thomas was murdered in his own Cathedral. Epiphany Carol Service Sun, 9 January 2022, 17.30 Celebrate the feast of the Epiphany with this beautiful Carol Service. The music and readings reflect on the three signs of Christ’s ‘Epiphany’ (his manifestation to the world): the visit of the Wise Men, the Baptism of Christ, and the transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
Music Bach, Christmas Oratorio Sat, 20 November 2021, 19.30 £24.51 – £30.51 Start your countdown to Christmas with this sublime performance of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Parts I-III,VI). The Girls and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir will be joined by internationally- acclaimed period instrument ensemble, The Harmonious Society of Tickle- Fiddle Gentlemen, and a stellar line-up of professional solo singers for this performance in the Cathedral Quire. You’ll enjoy a variety of popular songs, followed by a cuppa and a biscuit! Led by the Cathedral’s Acting Assistant Organist, Adrian Bawtree.

Young Explorers Gregory’s Creature Safari – FREE* Safari maps available from Visitor Centre. Did you know that dragons lurk in the Cathedral? In fact, there are lots of animals and fantastical creatures to discover in the Cathedral’s stained glass, carved stone, and amazing objects. Gregory Gargoyle has chosen 10 of his favourite animals for you to find - including birds, cats, dogs, and even wyverns!
Gregory’s Hidden History Hunt – FREE* Gregory Gargoyle loves to discover things about the Cathedral, and he has hidden 10 of his favourite facts around The Precincts for you to find. In our outdoor Precincts trail, use Gregory’s map to uncover each of these facts and use them to answer Gregory’s Cathedral quiz. Everyone who completes the Safari or Hunt correctly and in full, can return it to the Shop to claim a free Canterbury Cathedral pencil. Ready to get started? FRIENDly events The Friends are a part of the Cathedral community who work together to preserve this magnificent building by contributing financially to many vital projects. This includes a year-round programme of events, many of which are open to non-members. Family Advent Wreath Workshop Sat, 27 November 2021,10.00-14.00 Community Studio £10 per family group. Children must be accompanied at all times. Come along and make your own Advent wreath with The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral. All materials will be provided, including greenery from the Precincts. Be Still and Know: Advent Quiet Day Sat, 11 December 2021, 10.00-16.00 This is a free online event but donations to The Friends are welcomed. Join the Reverend Dr Emma Pennington, Canon Missioner, for reflection, stillness, and prayer as we prepare for Advent and Christmas. This event will be online.

One of our most popular speakers, Imogen Corrigan, returns to discuss how St Augustine’s mission led to the greatest upheaval the Church in Britain has ever known. NEW Viewing Gallery: Crafting the Cathedral A must for model enthusiasts and fans of architecture, this exhibition features exquisite 1:720 scale replicas of famous cathedrals, crafted in cardboard and wood, between 1840-1850, by model maker William Gorringe. Water Tower Corridor: Chalices, Flagons and Patens Church practice through the centuries has been full of variety, and this can be seen in the objects used in worship, from simple communion cups to decorated chalices. Water Tower: Monastic Life In this interactive exhibition in the Cathedral’s newly-restored Water Tower, discover what day-to-day life was like for Canterbury’s monks.
