9 June 2018 Centenary of the End of World War One 11 November 2018 Exhibitions & Events Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion, Victoria and Albert Museum Until 18 February 2018 Revered by his contemporaries and fashion designers today, Cristóbal Balenciaga represented the pinnacle of haute couture in the 1950s and 1960s and is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential designers of the last century. His exquisite craftsmanship and pioneering use of fabrics and cutting set the tone for the modernity of the late 20th century. The V&A will present the first exhibition on Balenciaga in the UK, marking the 100th anniversary of the opening of his first fashion house in San Sebastian and the 80th anniversary of the opening of his famous Paris salon in 1937. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will take an almost forensic look at the craftsmanship and skill that made Balenciaga’s creations so special and explore how his work has shaped future fashion design. The V&A has a large and important collection of Balenciaga and many pieces have not been seen before. https://www.vam.ac.uk/ Franklin, The National Maritime Museum Until January 2018 An epic story of Arctic endeavour that ended in tragedy, this exhibition will tell the story of Sir John Franklin’s famous 1845 expedition to the Northwest Passage, in the wake of the recent discovery of Franklin’s flagship, HMS Erebus. New archaeological evidence presented for the first time will give clues to the mystery of what went so tragically wrong when 129 men lost their lives in the ice. Group rates will be available in 2017. http://www.rmg.co.uk/national-maritime-museum Matisse in the Studio, Royal Academy of Arts Until 12 November 2017 Step into the studio of Henri Matisse, brimming with the artist’s treasured objects. Focusing exclusively on their important role in his work for the first time, we will reveal how this eclectic collection took on new life in his transcendent art. Matisse drew his collection from the far corners of the world: Buddhist statuary from Thailand, Bamana figures from Mali, textiles from Polynesia. Rarely of material value, these objects were nonetheless precious. Offering points of departure to which he could return again and again, they appear in his work in different guises and across spans of decades, reinvented afresh in each new setting. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/matisse-in-the-studio Can Graphic design save your life? Basquiat: Boom for Real is the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of American artist Jean- Michel Basquiat (1960- 1988). One of the most significant painters of the 20th century, Basquiat came of age in the post-punk underground art scene in Lower Manhattan in the late 1970s. More than any other exhibition to date, Basquiat: Boom for Real focuses on the artist’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing it within the wider cultural context of the time. Paintings, drawings and notebooks are presented alongside rare film, photography, music and ephemera in a design that aims to capture the dynamism of Basquiat’s practice. https://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=20335 Jasper Johns, Royal Academy of Arts 23 September- 10 December 2017 Jasper Johns’s position in the art world was established in the late 1950s when he first showed his iconic paintings of targets, flags and numbers in New York; motifs which, as he put it, “the mind already knows”. Charting his development over the last six decades and featuring paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture, this exhibition will seek to bring Johns’s work to a new audience, and confirm his continuing status as one of the most significant and influential living artists. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/jasper-johns Opera: Passion, Power and Politics, Victoria and Albert Museum 30 September 2017 – 25 February 2018 Together the V&A and the Royal Opera House will create a vivid and immersive journey through opera, from its origins in late-Renaissance Italy to the present day, in the inaugural exhibition of the new Sainsbury Gallery. The exhibition will focus on seven opera premieres, seven opening nights in seven distinct cultural landscapes, which culminate in the international explosion of opera in the 20th and 21st century. The exhibition will show how the creation of a new opera can reflect the social, political, artistic, and economic conversations, which define cities and will reveal the process of making opera from libretto to score, design to performance. The cities and premieres that will be explored are: Venice (Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, 1642); London (Handel’s Rinaldo 1711); Vienna (Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, 1786); Milan (Verdi’s Nabucco, 1842); Paris (Wagner’s Tannhäuser, 1861); Dresden (Strauss’ Salome. 1905) and St Petersburg (Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, 1934). https://www.vam.ac.uk/ Reflections; Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites, National Gallery 4 October 2017 – 2 April 2018 Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) was one of the beacons by which the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood took its stylistic bearings in forging a radical new style of painting. The painting informed the Pre- Raphaelites’ belief in empirical observation, their ideas about draughtsmanship, colour and technique, and the ways in which objects in a picture could carry symbolic meaning. The exhibition will examine early responses to the technique and style of the painting, from the first press notices to the writings of the painter and National Gallery Director, Charles Eastlake, and draws attention to the different ways in which the Pre-Raphaelite artists responded to the Arnolfini Portrait. https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/reflections-van-eyck-and-the-pre-raphaelites Dalí / Duchamp, Royal Academy of Arts 7 October 2017 — 7 January 2018 Take another look at two artistic giants: father of conceptual art Marcel Duchamp, and larger-than-life Surrealist Salvador Dalí. This is the first exhibition to throw light on their surprising relationship and its influence on the work of both artists. On the surface, these two great 20th-century artists could hardly be more dissimilar, but Dalí and Duchamp maintained a lasting bond of friendship and mutual admiration throughout their careers. What fuelled this seemingly unlikely friendship was deeper than their shared artistic interests – amongst them eroticism, language, optics and games. More fundamentally, the two men were united by a combination of humour and scepticism which led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life. This original exhibition brings together around 60 works, including some of Dalí’s most inspired and technically accomplished paintings and sculptures, and Duchamp’s groundbreaking assemblages and readymades. But it will also showcase the less familiar: photographs by Dalí, paintings by Duchamp, correspondence and collaborations between the two artists. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/dali-duchamp Poster Girls, London Transport Museum London – What’s New www.londonandpartners.com/traveltrade

This major exhibition will bring together for the first time over 50 of Cézanne’s portraits from collections across the world, including works which have never been on public display in the UK. Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) painted almost 200 portraits, including 26 of himself and 29 of his wife, Hortense Fiquet. Cézanne Portraitswill explore the special pictorial and thematic characteristics of Cézanne’s portraiture including his creation of complementary pairs and multiple versions of the same subject. In collaboration with Musée d’Orsay, Paris and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/2016/cezanne-portraits.php Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia, British Museum November 2017 Room 33 of the British Museum is to be reopened to the public in November after major renovations. A brand-new display will present a narrative of China and South Asia up to date with the present day. Updated interpretation, new lighting and design will allow this extraordinarily rich collection to be better seen and understood by the Museum’s seven million annual visitors. Monochrome; Painting in Black and White, National Gallery 1 November 2017 – 18 February 2018 This exhibition will explore the tradition of painting in black and white from its beginnings in the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and into the 21st century. Organised in a chronological manner, Monochrome: Painting in Black and White will present a series of case studies that investigate where and when painting en grisaille was used and to what effect: from early religious works, which stipulated that sacred images for particular locations or seasons in the liturgical calendar should be painted ‘without colour’, to paintings that emulate sculpture or respond to other media such as printmaking, photography, and film. https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/monochrome-painting-in-black-and-white The EY Exhibition: Impressionists in London: French artists in exile, Tate Britain 2 November 2017 – 29 April 2018 In the 1870s, France was devastated by the Franco-Prussian war and insurrection in Paris, driving artists to seek refuge across the Channel. Their experiences in London and the friendships that developed not only influenced their own work but also contributed to the British art scene. This exhibition is the first to m ap the connections between French and British artists, patrons and art dealers during a traumatic period in French history. Highlighting their engagement with British culture, traditions and social life, their art is a fascinating insight into how London was perceived by the visiting French artists, and the remarkable works that came from their time here. http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/exhibition/impressionists-london Red Star Over Russia, Tate Modern 8 November 2017 – 18 February 2018 London – What’s New www.londonandpartners.com/traveltrade
The year 2017 will mark the centenary of the October Revolution, which heralded a wave of innovation and design in Russia. In the years that followed 1917, as Russia became the Soviet Union, these early experiments and diverse practices formed a new visual culture for a nation that covered one sixth of the Earth. Red Star Over Russia explores artworks made by Russian and Soviet artists over five decades, from the first revolution of 1905 to the death of Stalin in 1953. Rarely seen posters, photographs, and other graphic works from the David King Collection – now part of Tate – are on display, including work by El Lissitzky, Gustav Klutsis, Dmitri Moor, Alexander Deineka, Nina Vatolina and Yevgeny Khaldei. http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/red-star-over-russia 'Medicine & Healing in India', Wellcome Collection 16 November 2017 This exhibition will offer a glimpse into some of the ancient practices of sustaining human health in India and examine their relevance to contemporary medicine and life. Born in Livorno, Italy and working in Paris from 1906, his career was tragically short but experimentation was a consistent priority. Connecting biography with practice, and including works in different media, the exhibition places Modigliani’s work in dialogue with pieces by his contemporaries including Brancusi and early Picasso. His sculpture, portraiture, nudes and paintings of young peasants reveal a body of work that borrowed from – and contributed to – the visual culture of his time. http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/modigliani Charles II: Art & Power, The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 8 December 2017 – 13 May 2018 After over a decade of austere Cromwellian rule, the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 led to a resurgence of the arts in England. The court of Charles II became the centre for the patronage of leading artists and the collecting of great works of art, which served not only as decoration for the royal apartments but also as a means of glorifying the restored monarchy and reinforcing the position of Charles II as the rightful king. From John Michael Wright's monumental portrait of Charles II in his coronation robes and a glittering silver-gilt dish which adorned the high-altar of Westminster Abbey during the King's coronation, to old master paintings, tapestries and spectacular silver-gilt furniture, the exhibition shows the rich material world of Charles II's court and the role of the arts in the re-establishment of the Stuart monarchy. https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/themes/exhibitions/charles-ii-art-power/the-queens-gallery- buckingham-palace ABBA: Super Troupers, Southbank Centre 14 December 2017 – 29 April 2018 This interactive exhibition takes you back through time to witness the musical journey of Swedish pop sensation ABBA, highlighting the sights and songs that saw them shoot to stardom. https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/123377-abba-super-troupers-201718 Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring A Classic, Victoria and Albert Museum 16 December 2017 – 8 April 2018 This exhibition will reveal the story behind the creative partnership of A.A. It will look at the development of Pooh from pre-views of verses and stories in periodicals to the published books and show the illustrative process and the interrelation of text and image. It will also improve its main entrance and will create a new state-of-the-art Learning Centre with a number of studio spaces. As well as extending activities for schools, families, young people and students, a volunteering programme will be introduced.
