TIMBER TRADE IN WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICA The West and Central Africa sub-region is an important producer of wood products, although production is dominated by industrial round wood and primary processing (mainly the production of sawn wood and wood-based panels). Historically, countries in the sub-region have been log exporters. Timber trade in the West and Central Africa sub-region is influenced by local, regional and overseas demands, with Europe being an important market for the major producing countries in the region. Much of the demand for wood product in the region is for rough-sawn and low-grade timber used in construction and joinery with regional markets. 2 nd largest mass of tropical rainforests in the world 230 million hectares of forest covering six African countries: Gabon, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, and Republic of Congo. + 100 species of trees: okoumé (Aucoumea klaineana), sapelli (Entandrophragma cylindricum), ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon), limba (Terminalia superba), and moabi (Baillonella toxisperma), ebony, Wengue More than 16 million m2 of roundwood production / year. Post Show Review Gabon WoodShow 2018 The inaugural edition of the Gabon WoodShow had a successful run from 20 – 22 June, 2018 at Jardin Botanique, Libreville, Gabon. It was the only event in West and Central Africa that caters to the wood sector, which aims to highlight the potential and dynamism of the timber industry in the sub-region. His Excellency Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon, officially inaugurated the event along with other ministers. Important regional and international associations such as the Gabon Government, Ministry of Forests Environment and Sustainable Development, the Forestry Commission for Central African States – COMIFAC, Agence Nationale De Promotion Des Investissements Du Gabon – ANPI-Gabon, Gabon Special Economic Zone (GSEZ), Eumabois (European Federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers), ATIBT, UFIGA, RAFM (Reseau Africain de Forets Modeles), Acimall (Italy), AIMSAD (Turkey), and China National Forestry Machinery Association (CNFMA), officially supported and participated in the three-day exhibition.
African Timber Forum African Timber Forum, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Forests Environment and Sustainable Development, was also held in partnership with the Forestry Commission for Central African States – COMIFAC. It discussed the future of African wood processing industry by 2030 that aims to analyze the options for developing a profitable, waste-free, carbon-efficient and socially inclusive African wood processing industry. Racewood The Racewood Technical Conference organized by Atibt in collaboration with UFIGA was hosted within the Gabon WoodShow. The symposium deliberated wood market certification and legality, wood and logistics strategy, strategies for sustainable development and product improvement and scale of manufactured products along with the state-of-the-art techniques.
