International Students on Snow Day I would like to say that it is such an honourable experience to have attended the snow trip, as it was my first time viewing snow, I would definitely remember it for my whole life. I would recommend others to go too! Visal Ean, 11C Snow day, not going last year was a mistake. Luckily, there was a chance to participate this year. I really had fun as I learnt how to ski. Furthermore it was a really fun experience and I would highly recommend those who will have the chance next year to take it. Kongyew Ly, 11F The snow day was so much fun. We learnt how to ski, which we really enjoyed. We also had some sushi, hot dogs and donuts from the shop up top the mountain. Overall, it was a fun experience; especially our snow fights! Yeklang Chao, 10B International Students at the Presentation Ball Sokhout and Dararith, Year 10 International Students We had the pleasure of attending the annual Presentation Ball held by Wellington Secondary College at The Grand on Cathie’s Lane. This night was quite special as it served as an example to what was we were to expect from next year’s Presentation Ball. Furthermore, we had the privilege of having the Premier of Victoria, Mr Daniel Andrews, in attendance. It was a pleasure seeing all the couples being presented and to see all of the dances. Everyone was very well dressed and looking glamourous on the night. Not only that but the venue was packed with the largest number of International students attending any event! It truly was a night to remember and we can’t wait for next year’s one. Visal, Kenny, Kongyew and Astra, Year 11 International Students We were very honoured to be invited as guests to Wellington Secondary College’s 2018 Presentation Ball. This year’s one was especially special as there were more than 50 international students in attendance with 2 students actually presenting! Smiles and laughs were shared between friends and families. Furthermore, we had the honour and gratitude of meeting the one and only Mr Daniel Andrews, which was a very rare opportunity indeed. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the Presentation Ball as we made new friends and experiences. Definitely one of the most memorable nights of our school years! Sovita, Jazz and Sivlin, Year 12 International Students As for the Year 12 International Students, it was a true honour to have the privilege of attending the 2018 Presentation Ball. We would like to give a huge thanks to Mr Hugh Blaikie, the Premier of Victoria, Mr Daniel Andrews, and Ms. Connie and all the staff members who weere in attendance during that glamourous night which made this evening even more unforgettable. We really enjoyed the presentation of the students in Year 11, in their beautiful dresses and suits but most importantly the showcase of all their hard work and dedication to make the night one of the most memorable. Overall we were most thankful for the opportunity to spend such a great night watching such a show stopping dance and it was such a pleasure to be able to put aside the pressures of Year 12 and come have fun for one night. Well worth the effort!
SENIOR VCAL COMMUNITY AWARENESS PROJECTS For our community awareness project, we chose Poverty. We chose FareShare as our external partnership. The reason we chose FareShare is because we wanted to donate food to the homeless people. In our ‘guess the lolly compe on’ we raised $55 for people living in poverty and the winner was Lalin Tea of 12J who guessed 908 lollies. We also had a can collec on, and asked our students and staff to donate non-perishable foods so FareShare could make meals for the homeless people. We reached our goal of 102kg of non-perishable foods and canned foods. On Au- gust 21 a driver from FareShare collected our food and took it to FareShare. Kanika and I would like to thank all staff and students who par cipated in our fundraising program for FareShare. Becky Chan and Kanika Prak 12V Our community awareness issue was Domes c Violence. The charity we chose was White Ribbon and they are responsible for helping those people who are affected by Domes c Violence. We chose this charity because they clarified how the money is going to help them. One of the ways we raised money was by doing fundrais- ers. We came up with two ideas for our fundraiser such as selling chocolates and donuts. How we did it was by planning and organizing how everything was going to lay out. At the end of fundraising, we ended up raising $168. We had fun doing the whole project and we knew it was for a good cause. Alex Mai, Tu Le and Leap Au 12V
For my senior VCAL project on August 25th I did a presenta on on a drinking safety organisa on named Drinkwise to 6 teachers. I researched what the organisa on does, their campaigns, drink driving laws and effects of alcohol on driving. My presenta on was designed to share the informa on I learnt about drinking safety. Hayden Ly 12V On August 2 we organised a concert at the school and a casual dress day to fundraise and spread awareness against bullying with the focus on promo ng awareness of cyberbullying. We chose Bully Zero as our charity because their goal is similar to ours. Many staff members helped us to promote our events. We were very successful and raised a total of $970 , which will go towards further awareness and preven on. It went well but we wished that we could have raised $1000. Joel Black , Sanara Bun, Thomas Nguyen and Johnny Nguyen 12V The year 12 senior VCAL class split into groups to research and find a charity for a community issue. Our group chose to look into Family Domes c Violence as it was one of the major community issues that we thought was very important and worth a further helping hand. We came across a charity called Safe Steps. We chose Safe Steps as it is a state -wide family violence response centre for interven on, support and advocacy. We contacted them and created an external partnership with them, offering to help and raise money. We came up with the idea of selling brochures and pins that they had sent to us to sell. We also sold pizzas bought from Pizza Boys August 14 to teachers and students, raising a total of $190 which will go to helping sup- port the fight against family violence. Jade Mayes, Harry Nguyen, Veasna Suon and Michael Trapouzanlis 12V
Year 11 Theme Day With a huge amount support from the Senior School teachers towards planning and organising, the Year 11 committee debuted their first event on August 9. Students dressed up in the spirit of the theme 'Twinning with your best friend(s)'. With an amazing amount of participation, there were many creative outfits on display. From matching pajamas to TV show references, students were given a chance to strut their stuff down a catwalk during the year level a s s e m b l y, s t r i k i n g a p o s e f o r o u r cameraman, Yash Daware. On average, one in four people will experience anxiety at some stage in their life. Anxiety is common, but the sooner people with anxiety get support, the more likely they are to recover. Year 8 Chinese Museum Excursion All of the Year 8 students studying Chinese went on an excursion on Friday August 24. Here are some of the students' reflections on this excursion from the Chinese class 8.3: "I learnt that a lot of the structure in Chinatown is regarded with significant meaning, such as the T-junction being bad luck, which was counteracted with a red door never been touched by the Chinese." "I learnt that China's culture and traditions heavily involve luck, fortune and respect. I also learnt that Chinatown was a place where the Chinese stayed during the gold rush in Melbourne in the 1800s. I learnt this in the Chinatown guided tour.“ "I have learnt that the Chinese Dragon, also known as the Millennium Dragon, is comprised of 9 parts from different animals. It has the head of a camel, body of a snake, claws of an eagle, ears of a cow, paws of a tiger, scales of a fish, horns of a deer, eyes of a rabbit and belly of a frog." “I have learnt about the history of Chinese people in Australia and how they made their way here. I also learnt more about their culture and beliefs." "Through the excursion I learnt that women with small feet were desired for various reasons: they couldn't run away from their husband and were believed to be graceful." "From this excursion I have learnt the history of the settlement of Chinese people in Melbourne and how they were treated unfairly. I also learnt what the developments the Chinese people have made such as paper." “I have learnt more about the beginning of Chinatown and how much of an impact it has made on the modern Chinese society in Melbourne." Excelling at Athletics Recently on Tuesday August 28, the Monash Division Athletics were held. One of our College Captains, Jack Scott-Smith (pictured with Principal, Hugh Blaikie), is a regular on the athletics track. Jack once again excelled on the day - winning several events. These events included the 800m, the 1500m and the 4 x 100m relay. Well done, Jack!
Year 9 Sculpture Excursion On Wednesday September 5, students from the Year 9 Sculpture class went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria. The day began with an exciting scavenger hunt where students worked in small groups to search the gallery for particular artworks based on small clues and questions given to them. They busied themselves with reading didactic panels, interpreting, analysing and describing artworks, searching for key visual features in artworks and sketching particular artworks. After a sunny lunch break near the Yarra River, students carried portable chairs and drawing materials to the Asian Art Collection in the NGV International and sketched sculptures of their choice to use as inspiration for their next sculpture assignment. Students also completed observational drawings of sculptures from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, time periods and materials. We look forward to returning to class with all of our inspiration documented and ready to be added to visual diaries in preparation for the next project. A big thank you to Ms Biggin for coming along too!
