U.S. News ranks KU School of Medicine #9 in primary care and #16 in family medicine U.S. News ranked KU School of Medicine #9 in primary care and #16 in family medicine in 2022. This ranking combines all three campuses of KUSM: Kansas City, Salina and Wichita. Typically, the Wichita campus produces one of the highest percentages of medical students matching into family medicine in comparison to any other campus across the country. In the last 30 years, the Wichita campus has had an average of 27% of medical students match into family medicine. In 2013, the Journal of Academic Medicine published the article “Toward graduate medical education accountability: Measuring the outcomes of GME institutions,” a one-of-a-kind study by health workforce researchers at George Washington University. In this study, KUSM-Wichita was ranked #6 in the production of primary care graduates, #1 in graduates practicing in rural areas and #2 in graduates practicing in underserved areas. We are proud of our graduates, faculty, residents and medical students who are advancing family medicine and serving those who need it most. Record-breaking attendance at the Department of Family & Community Medicine 2021 Virtual Spring Symposium! The DFCM hosted its annual Spring Symposium on Friday, April 9, and had a record-breaking attendance of 165. The focus on dermatology education resonated as an educational need for family physicians. Virtual formatting allowed for physicians from all over the state to participate. This conference was highlighted by dermatologist Brandon Litzner, M.D., who kindly answered chat questions throughout the conference as well as presenting two of the 16 presentations. Due to outstanding feedback, the department is offering the recorded videos of individual presentations online at bit.ly/KUFCMSpring21. KUSM-Wichita preceptors may find the following two presentations especially pertinent: • “Race and/or Ethnicity in Clinical Presentations” by Scott Moser, M.D. This presentation highlights the new medical school policy on mentioning race and/or ethnicity in the chief complaint: bit.ly/KUFCMMoserRaceEthnicity • Special thank you presentation, “There is a Light at the End of the Tunnel”: bit.ly/KUFCMThankYou Pictured from left to right: Maurice Duggins, M.D., Via Christi; Jeremy Lickteig, MS4, KUSM-W; Brandon Litzner, M.D., Heartland Dermatology; Miranda McKellar, M.D., community faculty, Norton; Amy Seery, M.D., Via Christi; Aaron Sinclair, M.D., Wesley; Andrew Westbrook, D.O., sports medicine fellow. Fresh from FM RADIO (Family Medicine Research and Data, Information and Outcomes) The article “Kansas family physicians’ perceptions of parental vaccination hesitancy,” written by Kale Mills and Kari Nilsen, Samuel Ofei-Dodoo, Kari Nilsen, Ph.D., was published in the Kansas Journal of Ph.D. Ph.D. Medicine using results of a recent FM RADIO survey. The survey explored the perceptions of family physicians as to why parents in Kansas may be vaccine hesitant. Results of the survey, performed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, revealed that the most common reason for parental vaccine refusal was fear of long-term complications. The vaccines most refused were HPV, influenza, and measles, mumps, and rubella. The purpose of this study was to aid physicians in understanding the reasons behind parental vaccine refusal so that they could better address parental concerns. The aim is to help combat the rising rates of parental vaccine refusal which has led to local outbreaks of disease. The full article can be found here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC7651789/. If you are interested in joining the FM RADIO network or would like more information about utilizing FM Radio for your survey needs, please contact DFCM-W research faculty, Kari Nilsen, Ph.D., at knilsen@kumc.edu and Samuel Ofei-Dodoo, Ph.D., MPA, M.A., CPH, at sofeidodoo@kumc.edu.
