Fake calls from Apple and Amazon support: What you need to know By Alvaro Puig Division of Consumer and Business Education, FTC Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls. In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s some- thing wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill. In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud ac- count. In fact, they say your account may have been breached. In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number. If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up. x Donotpress 1 to speak with customer support x Donotcall a phone number they gave you x Donotgive out your personal information If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real. Evidence Based Healthy Food Trends for 2021 Condensed from healthline By Katey Davidson, MScFN, RD Medically Reviewed by Lisa Hodgson RDN,CDN, CDCES The year 2020 brought hardships and change for many people around the globe, and our everyday habits and behaviors have drama&cally shi'ed. Our priori&es have changed as well, with many people focusing anew on their health and wellͲbeing, including what they eat. As a result, food and health culture have changed. We will see these changes come to frui&on in 2021. The top food and nutri&on trends ex- pected for 2021 include: Func&onal nutri&on including immunity boosters and ea&ng for be(er mental health ea&ng food with a purpose following a middleͲground approach for dietary habits convenience and transparency about ingredients family nutri&on. We will highlight these trends in this newsle(er beginning with immunity boosters. The future of food and drink will take cues from the supplement market, calling a(en&on to the roles that specific ingredients play in improving overall health and wellͲbeing. COVIDͲ19 is a reminder than health is transient and can change at any &me. This has lead to more products taking aim at suppor&ng a healthy immune system. According to Market Research, over 50% of consumers reported taking more supplements to support their immune health in 2020. The goal is to strive towards preven&on with a strengthened immune system rather than focusing on trea&ng condi&ons. More foods are available with added nutrients such as zinc, selenium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D. Alterna&ve remedies are expected to con&nue to increase in sales. With growing interest in honesty and transparency, companies will need to be careful of their messaging and avoid making health claims not backed by science. In 2021 you can look forward to a huge shi' in the food industry. Gone are the days of extreme diets, unnecessary ingredients, and false promises. As we move forward into the new year, we’ll see more people looking to eat food that has a purpose, story, and serves society and health. From a die&&an’s point of view, these changes appear to be a step in the right direc&on by focusing on things that truly ma(er. PICTURE THIS! A news photographer was assigned to get some video of a gigantic forest fire. Because of the dense smoke at ground level, his editor hired a light plane for aerial views. The photographer was told that the plane would be waiting for him at a small rural airfield. So the photographer drove to the airfield and spied a small plane warming up on the runway. He parked the car, ran to the plane, jumped in and yelled, “Let’s go!” Once in the air, the photographer shouted: “I want you to fly over the middle of the fire and get as low as you can get!” “Why?” asked the pilot. “What do you mean, why?” the exasperated photographer said. “I want to get some video of the fire for the news station!” With that, he flashed his em- ployee badge ID card. The pilot, now looking worried, quietly asked, “So you’re not the instructor?” FAIR PLAY “It’s been a long time since you and Bob have played golf together, “Tom’s wife said. “Has something happened?” “Sure has,” Tom said. “I ask you, would you play with someone who moves his ball closer to the hole when he thinks no one’s looking, deliberately creates a distraction halfway through his teammate’s backswing, and lies about his handicap?” “Certainly not!” cried his wife. “Well,” Tom said, neither will Bob.” Page 15 • h7p://bcutah.org/seniorͲcenter.htm For advertising info call: 1-800-950-9952 For ad info. call 1-800-950-9952 • www.lpiseniors.com Brigham City Senior Center, Brigham City, UT E 4C 05-1010
Marge’s Meanderings: Miss Read "If you can read this, Thank a teacher." I like this quote because by profession I am a teacher. Actually, I have been a teacher since I was born. My mother tells me that at 3 years old, I gathered all the neighbor children together, sat them under our big Maple tree in the front yard and told them to sit down so i could teach them. (You have heard all this before.) I really am not sure what I taught them, but since I can always put my mouth in overdrive at a moment's noce (just ask my hus- band ) I am sure that I could think of something to say. However, when I was li.le, my fa- vorite place to teach was under our Mulberry tree. I was small enough to stand up and pick berries while I taught. The neighbor kids would also pick berries and eat them, while I ex- pounded on the "Wonders of the World", whatever they were at that me. My mother was born in 1906 and at that me students only went as far as the 9th grade in school. AUer 9th grade, they had to move into town and stay with a family that lived close to the higher school. My mom and her family lived nine miles up the canyon from Cambridge, Idaho in an area called Nine Mile Canyon. Mother and her step sister, Elaine, rode a horse (bareback) down to the small town of Cambridge from their parents homestead to where the school was. By the me I was a young girl, the schoolbuilding in Cambridge was just a heap of falling bricks. Mom would take my sister and I up to see what was leU of "her school”. It never seemed like an abandoned building to me, even then. It always seemed to be a building to me that had teaching oozing out of the rubble. The spirit of educaon was nurtured into me through my mother. She was a natural born teacher who never went past 9th grade but she taught me many things and nurtured my desire to be a teacher. I would have to change my original quote that I started this arcle with by saying, "If you can read this, thank your Mother." I was the 9th of 11 children of my parents and we also had other kids who lived with us so they could go to school, or learn discipline in a loving way, taught by my parents. My wayward cousins or other people's children in town that had "hard to handle children", usually sent their kids to live at our house. My father had a farm, a ranch and a number of car dealerships and mechanic shops in the valley, (Marsh Valley) where boys could always work and Mom and Dad had an abundance of love to share and a lot of room and beds in our large home. I was so young at the me that I didn't go out the door to school in the morning aUer one of mom's filling and delicious breakfasts. My youngest sister didn't come along unl I was 7 and mom was 45, so for 7 years I had mom to myself aUer everyone else leU for school. There were many dishes to do aUer breakfast and mom didn't get an automac dishwasher for many years, so she sat me on a small stool by the sink in the morning while she washed the dishes. She would give me le.ers and num- bers to write and then combine le.ers into words so I could read words at the young age of 4. Idaho did not have Kin- dergarten programs at that me so Mom was my teacher unl I entered first grade. The house I grew up in had books everywhere. We also had builtͲin book shelves on either side of the fireplace in our family room. Both my Mother and Father loved books. My mother can only remember having one of her own books while she was growing up. Her parents could usually find her curled up somewhere with that book or another one she could find that belonged to someone else in her house. Finally, my mother was nicknamed, “Miss Read". I could be called that too, because I am like my mother and always have books piled by every chair or bed in the house, so I always have something to read. One of my fondest childhood memories (almost to my teenage years), is when every night, my mother put one child on each side of her and then read to us unl we fell asleep. Many nights I remember mother reading to us and then all of a sudden I was asleep and my Father was carrying me to my own bed to tuck me in for the night. I close this Marge's Meanderings for the New Year with another say- ing, "Sad is the man that can read and doesn't." It is important that our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren see us reading and more important it is that we read to them. One easy goal for me in this New Year is "read more and read more to thosepeople around me that I LOVE.' I write these Marge's Meanderings so I can keep in touch with many friends that I love. And that includes you! Page 16 • h7p://bcutah.org/seniorͲcenter.htm
