As the summer light fades and school begins, it is the perfect time to plot out your evenings' entertainment for the months ahead! glór has a packed programme of exciting artists and theatre, music, dance, film, comedy to appeal to everyone. Highlights that I am particularly looking forward to include: our Associate Artist Dave Flynn, and The Irish Memory Orchestra, (4-5 Oct), How to Catch a Star by Branar Theatre, (22-23 Oct), The Irish Chamber Orchestra, (18 Oct), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by Rough Magic, (27 Oct) and of course our annual MÓRglór Award to celebrate the exceptional concertina player Chris Droney, (17 Nov). It is wonderful to see audiences growing for our fortnightly Tuesday evening film season too - and the new monthly afternoon matinée will hopefully appeal to parents with babies, amongst others. We will continue to support artists in creating work, with various initiatives including Soundings, our Artist Supper Clubs, PlatForms and our Associate Artist scheme. Get Creative Theatre @ glór Post-show discussions with members of the company will take place after the following selected theatre shows and we invite you to join in, ask questions and reflect on the production with the artists: Frank Pig Says Hello, (Thurs 4 Oct); A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, (Sat 27 Oct) and Bat The Father Rabbit The Son, (Fri 2 Nov). Rough Magic Rehearsed Reading of Buttshaft by Fergal McElherron Free but ticketed (limited capacity) 2pm Sat 27 Oct Buttshaft is a story set in the hinterland of Clare. It is a study of women’s need to love, possess, survive and ultimately to make choices based on instinct. glór plans to present the full production in May 2019 and this is your chance to get a flavour of the play whilst in development. PlatForms PlatForms is a glór initiative to support artists in creating new work – it is free to attend for audiences and will illuminate the creative process and the choices that artists make. Soundings This autumn glór will launch a new initiative inviting a traditional music/dance artist to collaborate with another performance artist to spend a week together creating innovative new sounds. We are delighted to kick off this new exchange of ideas between fiddler Tola Custy and sound artist Natalia Beylis. See page 13 for details of their performative installation on Wed 14 Nov. Documentary Day glór will present a day devoted to the best Irish and international documentaries to brighten up gloomy January. Dive right in and immerse yourself in three fascinating films, or choose from our film package. Film Season: Shorts and Afternoon Screenings Get Creative From our open call for short films, glór has selected a series of witty, moving and thrilling shorts to accompany the main feature film. We have also added afternoon screenings to selected films for parents & baby or for those who would prefer to see an earlier screening. BYOK – Bring Your Own Kids! We appreciate it can be an expensive night out when you have to pay for a sitter as well as everything else – so we have noted some shows that are suitable for well-behaved children to attend, for a parents-child date night! Clare. First Fridays is a monthly series of talks and interactions with some of Ireland’s leading visual arts practitioners, both curators and artists, this season curated by Deirdre O’Mahony. Deirdre O’Mahony’s art practice is grounded in collaborative engagements with different rural publics and contexts. In Clare, she developed X-PO, a former rural post-office in Kilnaboy as a social and cultural public exchange for different communities. glór presents Mick O’Dea Selects… From Fri 7 Dec – Sat 19 Jan Launches Fri 14 Dec Mick O’Dea Selects… is one of the most significant exhibitions of contemporary Irish art in recent years, and is a return of the hugely successful glór Selects… series, which sees a renowned Irish artist curate an exhibition of artists whose work has influenced or inspired their own work. For the 2018 Selects… exhibition, Ennis local and President of the RHA, Mick O’Dea has pulled together an extraordinary line-up of artists from the senior council of the RHA. Artists whose work will feature in this landmark exhibition include Una Sealy, James Hanley, Blaise Smith, Colin Martin, october Donald Teskey, Abigail O’Brien, Eithne Jordan, Carey Clarke, Geraldine O’Neill, Eilis O’Connell, and of course work from visual arts Mick himself. Dublin in the 1980s. Rabbit is a self-made haulage magnate. But something’s wrong. He cuts a deal with his underling Keogh to help him find his lost moorings. The quest is hampered by his dead father Bat, Citizen Army volunteer and pawn shop assistant, bubbling up. The struggle between father and son, past and present, imagination and reality, spans Dublin.
