                                                   Medications
School nurses are prohibited by state law from dispensing medication to school children without specific written
authorization from parents and the family doctor.This applies to prescription drugs and to over-the-counter items
such as Tylenol, Advil, eye drops, antihistamines, etc.
If parents expect a medication to be dispensed to a child during the hours he/she is in school, the following require-
ments must be met in each specific case of treatment:
1) From the family doctor…a written request indicating frequency and dosage of a prescribed medication.
2) From the parents…a written request to administer the medication as specified by the doctor.
3) By the parents…direct personal delivery of the medication to the school nurse.
4) By the school nurse…storage of the medication in a locked drawer or file separate from supplies kept for emer-
     gency care.
The authorization described above does not carry over from one school year to the next. It must be updated with
the start of the new school year.
Parents of children who require special attention for medical reasons should discuss the problem with the school
nurse as soon as possible after school starts.
Please see our school nurses and/or the District website for the authorization form for students to possess and
use over-the-counter medications in school. Please note that educational law requires that the school nurse cannot
dispense over-the-counter medications without this authorization form signed by parents and the family doctor.

                                             School Physicals
New York State Education Dept. law requires that students in grades Pre-K, K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 as well as those enter-
ing kindergarten and new entrants to Caledonia-Mumford Central schools have a health appraisal (physical exam) on
file in the Health Office. It is recommended that this exam be made by your family healthcare provider who knows
your child best. Body mass index and dental forms are required as well. Forms may be found on our website at www.
cal-mum.org.

                                         Accidents/Insurance
Our school district will no longer provide accident insurance for students. Parents will need to provide their own in-
surance for any injuries occurring during all school functions.This includes but not limited to sports and gym injuries
or any accidents sustained while participating in a school sponsored activity.

                        Child Health Plus Health Plan for Kids

       Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
The underlying premise of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is that
students have a right to feel safe in their school and that the school staff has
the responsibility to secure their safety.
The objective of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is to shift the
balance of power away from students who bully to the students that are
committed to help put an end to bullying and to school personnel who
confront the unacceptable behaviors of aggressive students.
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program teaches students how to deal with
bullying. Because much of the time bullying incidents do not occur in the
presence of school staff members, student involvement in helping our school
put an end to bullying is critical.Through classroom lessons the students will
learn to:
   • Define bullying and understand what behaviors are considered bullying;
   • Understand the effect of bullying behavior and develop empathy for
       targeted students; Please visit www.cal-mum.org or sectionvny.org for all sports schedules.
   • Learn ways to respond to bullying behavior;
   • Learn when and how to report bullying;
   • Learn the consequences the school has established for engaging in
       bullying behaviors.                                                                                                                                                                                                             page 9
