1. THE UNIVERSITY FOR FOREIGNERS OF SIENA The University for Foreigners of Siena, located in the famous historic centre of the city, is a public institution with a special mandate for undertaking research and instruction in the fields of Italian language and culture. Teaching and research activities at the University for Foreigners of Siena are carried out by the Faculty of Italian Language and Culture, the Department of Humanities, the Department of Languages and Cultures Sciences, the Language Centre and the Centre for Certification in Italian as a Foreign Language (Cils). The University for Foreigners of Siena provides courses for both university students and lan- guage teachers. In addition to traditional courses in language and culture, offered in an inno- vative range of combinations, the University of Siena for Foreigners awards a university degree, specialist degrees, and confers specialised postgraduate degrees and research doctorates. The University for Foreigners of Siena, with its long-standing experience in the fields of linguistics and language teaching, also provides further training for Italian and for- eign teachers of Italian as a foreign language. In Siena and abroad, the University offers training, refresher courses and advanced courses for Italian language teachers. These programmes are constantly updated and revised in order to include develop- ments and trends in linguistic research and language teaching. To effectively fulfil its mandate on an international level, the University for Foreigners of Siena works closely with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. At both national and internation- al levels, the University for Foreigners of Siena promotes cultural links with other universities, cultural institutions and research bodies, collaborating with profession- als in the areas of culture and scientific research abroad. EILC (ERASMUS INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSES) 2 In the context of the Erasmus Action of the LLP Programme, the European Commission promotes the Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC), with the aim of spreading the European languages which are less spoken and taught.
The EILCs are planned to take place in the following 23 countries: Belgium (Flemish Community), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey. The Erasmus Intensive Courses for linguistic Preparation (EILC) may take place from summer before the start of the academic year until end of February. Courses vary in length according to country and the student’s level of language knowledge, and normally last between 3 and 8 weeks. The Erasmus Intensive Language Courses will be offered at two levels of linguistic knowledge (level I: beginner; level II: intermediate) to students (and possibly teachers) participating in the LLP/Erasmus programme who have been admitted to study in one of the European countries listed above. The University for Foreigners of Siena is one of the organising institutes of the EILCs in Italy. The EILC courses will take place in two different sessions: summer (August, September) and winter terms (January, February). The approximate number of foreign students who attends EILC courses in Italy every year is 350 per organising institution (total Italy: 700). Applications should be submitted to the students’ home institutions, which will be responsible for forwarding the applications to the course organisers. Application forms and information notes on the courses on offer are available at the home institutions, as well as on the European Commission site (General Management Education and Culture): http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/llp/erasmus/eilc/index_en.html. Participating students do not have to pay any kind of tuition fee. The National Agency/home institution may award a supplementary Erasmus grant for the duration of the course. In return, students will be asked to contribute to the evaluation of the courses and of their impact on their academic studies. 3. By bus: From the North: From Pisa airport to Siena (hours 14.30 and 22:45). The ticket costs about € 14,00. From Florence ask for “Siena rapida” service. It takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. REGISTRATION Your home University must send to the Erasmus and International Mobility Office of the University for Foreigners of Siena your personal data (name, address), in order to submit you 4 the application form, which has to be filled out and returned to us by fax, mail or email. Once in Siena you must go to our Erasmus and International Mobility Office to complete your registration. Our office will be at your complete disposal for any infor- mation, as well our Housing Office for any help with accommodation problems.
5. HOW TO GET AROUND IN TOWN Siena is a small town. It is possible to cross the centre by foot. Town buses, as well as private cars, are not allowed to cross the historical centre, except for “Pollicino” – minibuses – which connect peripheral parking sites with the centre. If you want to reach peripheral areas or the countryside, the cheapest and fastest way is to go by bus (orange colour). Tickets are available at newsagent’s, tobacconist’s and at the TRA.IN office and cannot be purchased directly on the bus. For information TRAIN +39 0577 204111 www.trainspa.it. Several parking areas are distributed all around the historical centre just at the outskirts of the town, which offer the possibility to reach the centre by minibuses. ACCOMMODATION The University for Foreigners of Siena is able to help all incoming Erasmus stu- dents to find a suitable accommodation, in order to satisfy all their different needs. We offer places in our Guest House “Villa Il Pino” (Via Berlinguer, 1), a recently con- structed building which sleeps up to 60 people. The entire complex consists of three buildings and offers single, double and triple rooms, one quadruple room, and mini- apartments all with private bathroom with shower and kitchenette. Some places are available in Students’ residences and dormitories located in different areas of the city, but mainly in the city centre. 7. MEALS Students enrolled at the University for Foreigners may eat at the University canteens: Ristorante “Sallustio Bandini” - Via Sallustio Bandini, 47 Monday – Friday lunch 12.00 – 14.30, dinner 19.00 – 21.15; Ristorante “S. Agata” Via S. Agata, 1 Monday – Sunday, lunch 12.00 – 15.00, dinner 19.30-21.30 The cost of a meal is about € 2.50. 8. HEALTH CARE Any citizen of a EU country has the right to medical treatment, both urgent or nec- essary in exactly the same way as all Italian citizens. Citizens from member countries of the European Union on a temporary stay abroad in Italy (for reason of study, tourism or work) must have one of the forms for med- ical assistance in Italy issued by the country of origin: the European Union card (TEAM) or its temporary substitute certificate (CTRF). Students from member countries of the European Union In order to make use of the services offered by the National Health Service they must register with the facility (hospital, first aid, general practitioner) by showing the TEAM card or the temporary substitute certificate. Students from countries that do not belong to the European Union must remem- ber that no official treaties exist as regards coverage of medical costs. They must take out an international insurance policy which covers all medical costs in the case of medical treatment or hospital stays which must be validated by the consulate. An alternative procedure may be to take out a policy in Italy, which includes cover- age for urgent hospital stays. In this case the form must be collected from the Erasmus Office. Health insurance is a fundamental requirement in order to obtain a stay permit. 9. HOW MUCH IS IT? 6 Budget: purely as an indication, here are the principal expenses you will incur during your stay in Siena (prices are approximate):

HELLO, WHO’S SPEAKING? The city code for Siena is 0577. To call a number in Italy from abroad, first dial the country access code (+39), the city code and finally the number of the receiver. To call your country from Italy, first dial 00, then the code for your country, the city code and the number. Public telephones are indicated by a Telecom sign and can be operated with phone cards € 1.00, 2.50, 5.00 and 7.50. Cards are available at airports, railways stations, newsagents, post offices, bars. 11. PUBLIC OFFICES POST OFFICES Post offices are open from 8.15 to 13.30 from Monday to Friday; Saturdays 8.15 – 12.30. At the main office in Piazza Matteotti, 37 some services are available until 19.00 and Saturdays until 18.00. BANKS Banks are normally open from 8.30 to 13.30 and from 14.30 to 16.00, Monday to Friday. If you wish to open a bank account, it is first necessary to have a tax code, which can be obtained at the Agency for Direct Taxation called “Uffici Finanziari Sezione 7 Staccata di Siena” (Via Banchi di Sotto, 52 – Palazzo Piccolomini). To the chosen bank branch you must produce the following documents: • Identity card or passport
• Permit of stay • Tax code • Erasmus Certificate or certificate issued by the University for Foreigners of Siena In order to receive money from abroad, you must provide the sender with the Swift and Iban codes of the bank and your bank account number. This means that they do not have to request the permit of stay nor declare their presence upon arrival in Italy. EU students staying in Italy for more than 3 months must register with the “Anagrafe” Office of the Municipality where they reside. EU students will be assisted with their registration by a member of the staff of Erasmus Office. NON-EU Students According to the Law N. 68 of 28th May 2007, all NON-EU students staying in for a period of less than 90 days no longer need to acquire a permit of stay (permesso di soggiorno). It is now only required that the presence of each student is declared at the Questura – Police Headquarters – (call free number 800.309.309). For NON-EU students staying for a period of more than 90 days the permit of stay is still required. Permits of stay and permanent residence cards may be handed over by the person concerned to the Post Offices qualified for acceptance by using the kit available at any designated Post Offices, Patronati and Municipalities. Documents required for the permit of stay are: 8 - 1 FULL PHOTOCOPY OF PASSPORT including ALL THE PAGES (blank pages included);
- 1 copy of INTERNATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY (this health insur- ance is ONLY valid if your policy specifically states that coverage abroad is included). Students who do not have International Health Insurance will be supplied with an Italian Emergency Insurance. This will only cover emergency medical services in Italy; - The ORIGINAL University for Foreigners of Siena’s acceptance letter which you presented to the Italian Consulate or Embassy, bearing their official stamp or seal. This letter should have been returned by the Italian Consulate together with your passport and visa; - A Revenue Stamp in the amount of € 14,62. This certificate may also be issued by the student’s personal doctor as long as it is in Italian, English or French. MUSEUMS Museo Civico Palazzo Comunale Il Campo 1 This museum is situated in one of the most important Italian public building from the Gothic period. It contains some of the masterpieces of the Sienese his- tory and art. Spedale Santa Maria della Scala Piazza del Duomo In the ancient Sienese hospital, this museum exhibits frescoes, works of art and treas- ures collected in its millenary history. Pinacoteca Nazionale Palazzo Buonsignori, Via S. Pietro 29 The national gallery of Siena contains the biggest Sienese painting collection from the XII century to the first half of the XVII century. Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana Piazza Jacopo della Quercia It preserves objects and works of art coming mainly from the Cathedral, includ- ing some famous works of the Sienese und Tuscan school from the XIII to XV century. Museo Archeologico Nazionale Piazza del Duomo It exhibits a rich heritage finds and offers an extensive documentation of the history of the senese area from the prehistory to the roman age. Palazzo delle Papesse – Centro di Arte Contemporanea Via di Città 126 Museum dedicated to exhibitions, workshops and events of contemporary art. Museo delle Tavolette di Biccherna – Archivio di Stato Palazzo Piccolomini, Via Banchi di Sotto 52 12 It collects tablets painted by the most famous Sienese artists from 1258 to 1682. They are plenty of documentary and artistic value concerning the Sienese history and town planning.
Musei delle Contrade In the 17 museums, as many as the Sienese districts, an extraordinary heritage of doc- uments, works of art, relics, costumes and won “Palios” belonging to the “Contrade” is held. Orto Botanico Via Pier Andrea Mattioli 4 It is a magnificent green area in the heart of the city centre, where lots of different kind of plants coming from all over the world grow. Oratorio di San Bernardino e Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra Piazza San Francesco In this valuable architectural complex there are preserved works from churches and convents of the Sienese diocese.
