IT’S A NICE PROBLEM TO HAVE: HOW TO IMPROVE ON LAST SEASON? After the success of last season, we are riding high at The Shaw. So now we have to try to do even better. We’ve shown that we can do great musicals? Then let’s do two of them. Gypsy and Assassins are two of the peaks of American Musical Theatre, mixing great drama and great tunes to create something really special. We’ve shown that we are masters of comedy? Then let’s do one of the best, Charley’s Aunt. And we’ve shown that we can do justice to the genius of Bernard Shaw, so let’s put his most popular play, The Devil’s Disciple, on the Festival stage. Every show in the season will feature audience favourites, new and old: Sherlock Holmes and The Raven’s Curse is a good example. I’m directing Charley’s Aunt and the lunchtime one-act, Virginia Woolf’s delightful Flush: the love story of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, seen through the eyes of her cocker spaniel. The Royal George will also be home to Narnia, as we present our family show, Prince Caspian, in which Lucy and the other Pevensie children meet some remarkable creatures and talking trees. Oh – and you know how you wished you could see Me and My Girl again? Well, you can: it’s our holiday treat for Christmas 2020, along with A Christmas Carol. Don’t leave it too late to book. Tim Carroll Artistic Director
Kate Hennig. FESTIVAL THEATRE April 8 – October 11 GYPSY A Musical Fable, Book by Arthur Laurents Music by Jule Styne, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Suggested by memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee Original production by David Merrick & Leland Hayward Entire production originally directed & choreographed by Jerome Robbins Directed and choreographed by Kimberley Rampersad AMERICAN MUSICAL Gypsy Rose Lee was the world’s most famous striptease artist; Mama Rose the ultimate stage mother. Follow their extraordinary story in Stephen Sondheim’s timeless musical about sex, power and longing. With legendary songs, including “Let Me Entertain You” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” Gypsy remains the greatest American musical. Grade 7+ 2
Katherine Gauthier and Martin Happer. FESTIVAL THEATRE May 14 – October 9 THE DEVIL’S DISCIPLE By Bernard Shaw Directed by Eda Holmes CLASSIC SHAW Dick Dudgeon is one of Shaw’s great puzzles. To the people of his Revolution-era New England town he is “the Devil’s disciple.” But when British soldiers come to take their Presbyterian minister to the gallows for helping the rebels, Dudgeon does something truly remarkable. A potent mixture of sex and danger, Shaw’s first major hit has some of his best scenes and his sharpest comedy. Grade 7+ Production Sponsor William & Nona Macdonald Heaslip Foundation 3
FESTIVAL THEATRE June 21 – October 18 SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE RAVEN’S CURSE By R. Hamilton Wright Based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Directed by Craig Hall MURDER MYSTERY He’s back. Everyone’s favourite detective returns to The Shaw - but this time it’s personal. When his much-loved uncle dies in mysterious circumstances, Sherlock must revisit the scenes (and loves) of his youth. Is there really a curse on his family? Will he – or perhaps his beautiful and brilliant cousin – be the next victim? Holmes and Watson have to race against time to solve the puzzle. Grade 7+ Production Sponsor 4
Miriam Fernandes. FESTIVAL THEATRE August 15 – September 19 MAHABHARATA Adapted by Ravi Jain and Miriam Fernandes A Why Not Theatre Production Commissioned and presented by the Shaw Festival Directed by Ravi Jain EPIC DRAMA Presented in conjunction with Toronto’s innovative Why Not Theatre, Mahabharata is a two-part (Part 1: Karma and Part 2: Dharma) contemporary take on a Sanskrit epic that is more than four thousand years old and foundational to Indian culture. This gripping story of a family feud is an exploration of profound philosophical and spiritual ideas. Mahabharata is a visually stunning spectacle presented in two parts that takes audiences on a journey through the past in order to write a thrilling new future. Call group sales for details. Grade 9+ Production Sponsors Corinne & Victor Rice Tim & Frances Price Supported by Andy Pringle Creative Reserve 5
Mike Nadajewski. ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE April 2 – October 17 CHARLEY’S AUNT By Brandon Thomas Directed by Tim Carroll LAUGH-OUT-LOUD-COMEDY Today’s the day. If Charley and Jack don’t tell Amy and Kitty how they feel about them, the college term will finish and they may never see them again. But their plan to invite the young ladies for lunch depends on the presence of Charley’s visiting Brazilian aunt. When she lets them down at the last moment, all hope seems to have gone. Except that their friend, Fancourt Babberley, happens to be on his way to a fancy-dress party … hilarity ensues in this laugh-out-loud comedy. Grade 6+ Production Sponsor Mary E. Hill 6
Jonathan Tan. ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE April 23 – September 5 PRINCE CASPIAN Adapted for the stage by Damien Atkins Based on the novel by C.S. Lewis Directed by Molly Atkinson NARNIA ADVENTURE After the success of The Magician’s Nephew and The Horse and His Boy, we return to Narnia with a gripping adventure based on one of the best-loved C.S. Lewis books. Young Prince Caspian has all the courage in the world, but he will need the four Pevensie children to help defeat his wicked uncle and restore peace to the land of Narnia. Featuring a battle scene so epic that even the trees join in, this is a wild ride for the whole family. Grade 1+ Production Children and Family Christopher & Sponsor Program Supporter Jeanne Jennings 7
ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE June 5 – October 10 FLUSH LUNCHTIME ONE-ACT Based on the novella by Virginia Woolf Adapted and directed by Tim Carroll A DOG’S TALE One of the greatest love stories of all time, seen through the eyes of a dog. Not any old dog: Flush was the subject of some delightful verses by Elizabeth Barrett, the invalid poet who amazed the world by eloping with Robert Browning. Virginia Woolf’s ‘biography’ of one of history’s greatest cocker spaniels is a comic masterpiece about much more than a dog. Grade 7+ Production Sponsor James & Diane King 8
ROYAL GEORGE THEATRE July 11 – October 10 ASSASSINS Book by John Weidman Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr Directed by Meg Roe SONDHEIM MUSICAL Who on earth would want to kill an American president? Nine people have tried, four successfully. That’s not obvious material for a musical – unless you’re Stephen Sondheim. With music that spans the lifetime of the United States, he creates a carnival show, in which the nine assassins and would-be assassins, from John Wilkes Booth to Sara Jane Moore, tell their stories. The result is a bold and brilliant piece of theatre from the undisputed master of the modern musical. Mature content. Grade 9+ Production Sponsor James F. Brown 9
JACKIE MAXWELL STUDIO THEATRE May 6 – September 6 THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD By J.M. Synge Directed by Jackie Maxwell IRISH COMEDY A murderer walks into a bar. Only, this being the wild West of Ireland, the man who has ‘killed his Da’ is greeted as a welcome relief from the monotony of life. To the landlord’s daughter Pegeen Mike, who is facing the imminent prospect of marrying a farmer, the mysterious Christy Mahon seems to embody all the danger and fearlessness that she has long dreamed of. But then his Da turns up. And he’s not dead. Grade 9+ Production Sponsor Michael Eagen Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre Sponsored by 10
Johnathan Sousa and Julia Course. JACKIE MAXWELL STUDIO THEATRE June 4 – October 10 DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS By Eugene O’Neill Directed by Selma Dimitrijevic AMERICAN DRAMA Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece of erotic desire takes a Greek tragedy and sets it on an American Gothic farmstead. The son can see that his father’s new young wife plans to push him out. His passionate hatred for her is only matched by hers for him. Blinded by passion, they are set on a collision course. But the rest of the world is not blind. Grade 12+ Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre Sponsored by 11
JACKIE MAXWELL STUDIO THEATRE July 17 – October 10 TROUBLE IN MIND By Alice Childress Directed by Philip Akin GROUNDBREAKING PLAY This should have been the first play by a black woman on Broadway. But in 1955 Alice Childress refused to have it staged on the Great White Way. Why? Because it is a play about white people putting on plays about black people, and the compromises that black artists have to make to work in the prevailing culture. Childress chose not to make the kind of compromise that Willetta, the heroine of her play, has spent her life wrestling with. A devastatingly observant satire on the rehearsal hall as a microcosm of society, this funny and moving play is a piece for our times. Mature content. Grade 9+ Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre Sponsored by 12
