JANUARY 2021 ECE CENTRE DIRECTOR IMPRESSED WITH NZTC GRADUATES Philippa Terei is proud to work alongside confident, competent educators. A Centre Director of 25 years, Philippa Terei is impressed with the quality of New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC)’s graduates and student teachers – many of whom are employed at her centre in Milford, Auckland. “I have the privilege of working alongside NZTC graduates in my centre, and have observed the quality of their knowledge and their practical implementation of this in practice. It is wonderful to see they have a good understanding of theory and current trends in education, gained through NZTC’s programs which offer a strong ECE foundation. “I also find it extremely rewarding having the opportunity to mentor and support the development of our student teachers for the Field Practice component of their studies, especially when they end up becoming staff members with us upon graduation.” I have the privilege of working alongside NZTC graduates in my centre, and have observed the quality of their knowledge and their practical implementation of this. When hiring teaching staff in her centre, Philippa looks for dedicated individuals who demonstrate a true passion for working with young children. Philippa Terei with children from her centre “Displaying a friendly, welcoming and caring personality is important; along with an ability to embrace flexibility and work well with others. It is important that those who join our team also hold the same values and philosophy as our centre.” For aspiring educators considering a career in ECE, Philippa says there are many positive employment opportunities available. “At present, there are a number of vacancies throughout New Zealand for qualified teachers. JANUARY 2021 SUMMER SERIES – QUEENSTOWN Throughout the summer months, we will be taking a closer look at some of New Zealand’s top holiday spots for our international students to explore. This time, we highlight key attractions in picturesque Queenstown. At a glance A breathtakingly scenic town located in New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown sits on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, nestled amongst the Southern Alps. It is widely known as the Adventure Capital of the world, with many exciting activities to get your adrenaline pumping! Photo credit: Julian Apse Shotover River A fast-flowing body of water 75 kilometres long, the Shotover River boasts numerous rapids – perfect for jet boating and white water rafting. For those really looking to step out of their comfort zone, a giant bungy swing provides a thrilling birds-eye view of the river and the surrounding canyons. Photo credit: Shotover Jet Luge Classed as the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere, the Skyline Gondola ascends hundreds of metres above Queenstown to the top of Bob’s Peak, where the famous Luge awaits. Riders navigate fast-paced twists and turns as they take in the stunning alpine scenery. Hop aboard a cruise boat and witness key landmarks such as the towering Mitre Peak – the highest mountain on the globe to emerge directly from the sea floor.
