Children's programs remain suspended until restrictions are relaxed to allow
singing and the removal of mask wearing.

Snip the straps!
Don’t forget to cut your
mask straps before
you bin them to help
protect our wildlife.
Disposable face masks are
providing great protection for
humans during the pandemic.

At the same time, they are
having a not so great impact on
a wide range of animals,
mostly due to strap
entanglement.

To help our wildlife also make
it safely through the pandemic,
please cut the straps of your
masks before you put them in
the bin!

2021 Census --
 - Tuesday 10 August 2021
Census data is used to build a better future for us all.

Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and household
in Australia. Census data is used to inform decisions on issues that touch our lives
every day, from schools, healthcare, transport and infrastructure to local services for
individuals, families and communities. For example:

 • the number of people in remote areas tells doctors where life-saving help is
 needed most
 • local birth rates help plan local playgroups that connect families
 • understanding languages used at home links migrants to community services
 like English lessons.

The data from the 2021 Census will be more important than ever. It will provide
valuable insights into how the pandemic has changed life in Australia.

Every household and person in Australia on Census night must be included, including
visitors to Australia, international students and babies.

Instructions were delivered to households in early August. You can start your Census
as soon as you receive them, if you know where you will be on Census night, Tuesday
10 August.

You can complete online, by paper, or with help from the Australian Bureau of
Statistics.

All personal information collected is kept safe and is not shared with anyone. You and
your family cannot be identified by the information you put on your Census.

Visit www.census.abs.gov.au or call 1800 512 441 for more information.

For help in your language, call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National)
on 131 450.

Weekly waste tip
Masks need to be placed in the General Waste to Landfill Bin.

Council’s waste provider East Waste has been receiving enquiries about possible
recycling options for face masks.

Q: Is recycling an option?

A: Although recycling options have been considered – such as the Zero Waste
disposable mask boxes, offered through TerraCycle – recycling masks is not
considered to be a safe or practical solution. With many messages out there at the
moment, we do not want to confuse people into thinking they can place masks in their
yellow recycle bins. This will cause contamination issues.

We can AVOID waste in the first place:

By staying at home we can minimise the need to use face masks, gloves and hand
sanitiser.

Choose to use a reusable and washable cloth mask. You may even consider making
your own face masks from old fabric or clothing that you have at home. Click here to
find out how.

✂ If you are using a disposable mask, please ensure that you cut the elastic straps
before disposing of it, to minimise impacts on wildlife, if the mask escapes the bin.
