Winter 2019 Voice of Literacy www.literacysandiego.org (888) 850-7323 contact@literacysandiego.org Thank you Mrs. Geisel! Calendar of Events Last month, literacy lost one of its best friends. Our partner in literacy, Audrey Geisel, passed away on December 19th. She was 97 years old. March 2nd Read Across America Day/ Her husband, Theodore Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, was the creative brain Dr. Seuss's Birthday behind the many characters and movies that succeeded in introducing children to books that taught many of us how to read. Dr. Seuss passed away in 1991 at the age of 87. While Dr. Seuss’s books will be forever popular with emerging readers, Mrs. Geisel reinforced this popularity by establishing herself as the living face and voice of Dr. Seuss books. She became a representative of the good things that came from reading this colorful literature. June 8th Shortly after Theodore Geisel passed away, Mrs. Geisel established the Dr. Seuss READ/San Diego Countywide Fund/Dr. Seuss Foundation, in memory of her husband and with the aim of Tutor Conference supporting causes that she and Theodore Geisel cared about. During this time period, Mrs. Geisel served on the board of directors of the San Diego Council on Literacy. Imagine a board of director roster that included Audrey Geisel and Helen Copley, publisher of The San Diego Union-Tribune! Mrs. Copley passed away in 2004. I had the honor of meeting Mrs. Geisel on a few occasions. She would call me from time to time. One of the last calls came in 2008. In that call, Mrs. Geisel expressed concern about the state of literacy in America. More specifically, she was alarmed that communication by email and texting was reinforcing bad writing habits. She didn’t September 8th like the careless writing she was seeing and the rapid way and shortcuts that young people were taking in their written communications. She said, “Our literacy is in International Literacy Day trouble Jose. We can have technology and good writing. We can have both.” We know that we lost a good friend. The books and the movies live on. Over the past 32 years, the San Diego Council on Literacy has watched its champions come and go. We are grateful for the many years that Audrey Geisel was a champion in our corner. We are grateful for her friendship, advocacy, and contributions to greater literacy everywhere. Literacy was in Mrs. Geisel’s heart and soul. She cared about it, and she cared dearly about the thousands of children who wrote to thank her and Dr. Seuss for the joy that the Seuss books brought to them. In spirit, she will continue to influence our work. November 1st National Family Literacy Day Left to Right: Audrey Geisel, Jose L. Cruz, Jeanne Jones - 2008
