State-run vaccine sites are shutting down in June,

All state-run vaccine sites will close in June as part of Florida's plan to leave vaccine
distribution to county health departments and local providers, including doctor's offices,
pharmacies and clinics.

Some state-run sites plan to provide vaccines through June 18. Vaccine locations at
ports, such as PortMiami and Port Everglades, will offer doses until June 20. For other
sites and vaccine pop-ups, the last day will be June 25.

There will still be more than 2,000 locations across the state offering COVID-19
vaccines, according to the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County.
Additionally, each county will have the option to convert the state-run vaccine sites to
county-run sites to keep them open, according to the Florida Division of Emergency
Management. This is similar to what happened earlier this week with the four federally
supported vaccination sites in the state.

The FEMA-supported vaccine site at Miami Dade College North campus, for example,
that was expected to shut down earlier this week was taken over by Miami-Dade County
and remains open.

State-run testing will also end after Friday. Testing will still be available at other
locations — including select retail pharmacies, community health centers and urgent
care centers.

Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie told the Miami
Herald in an interview Thursday afternoon that the changes are part of the division's
transition from emergency to "non-emergency mode." Under this move, the task of
vaccine distribution will return to county health departments.

He said this is because the counties are no longer overwhelmed by long lines at vaccine
sites and crashing online appointment schedulers. Cases are going down and people
can get a vaccine as easily as they would a flu shot. And when a provider asks the state
for more shots, the request is filled within 48 to 72 hours, according to the division.

Guthrie said the state will "continue to make sure anybody that wants a vaccine, gets
the vaccine."

The division, which handles the state's disaster response, is also in the midst of
preparing for hurricane season — which officially starts on June 1.

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT SOUTH FLORIDA?

The change will affect 11 state-run vaccine locations in Miami-Dade County. Those
sites include Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, loanDepot park (formerly Marlins
Park) in Little Havana and the Overtown Youth Center, according to the county's health
department.

For the places listed above, the last day of vaccinations will be June 18. As for other
state-run sites, such as locations at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens and
Ronselli Park Youth Center in Sweetwater, the final day will be June 25.

Miami-Dade County told the Miami Herald on Thursday afternoon that it was still
debating whether it would take over the operations of some state-run sites.

State-run testing will also end after Friday. Testing
will still be available at other locations — including
select retail pharmacies, community health centers
                               and urgent care centers.

Florida Division of Emergency Management Director
Kevin Guthrie told the Miami Herald in an interview
Thursday afternoon that the changes are part of the
division's transition from emergency to "non-
emergency mode." Under this move, the task of
vaccine distribution will return to county health
                               departments.

He said this is because the counties are no longer
overwhelmed by long lines at vaccine sites and
crashing online appointment schedulers. Cases are
going down and people can get a vaccine as easily as
they would a flu shot. And when a provider asks the
state for more shots, the request is filled within 48
to 72 hours, according to the division.

Guthrie said the state will "continue to make sure
anybody that wants a vaccine, gets the vaccine."

The division, which handles the state's disaster
response, is also in the midst of preparing for
hurricane season — which officially starts on June 1.

How will this affect South Florida?

The change will affect 11 state-run vaccine locations

Burke Named CEO for Chamber of
   Commerce
   By Charlie Hudson
   May 28, 2021

Les Burke, Chief Executive Officer for South Dade Chamber of Commerce, comes to the position with a distinguished
   career in multiple fields.

Childhood dreams often give way to different interests and in other cases, steps are taken to follow
the desired path without hesitation. Originally from Mount Vernon, New York, Les Burke avidly
watched episodes of the television show, "Sea Hunt", and Jacques Cousteau specials.

5/28/2021 Burke Named CEO for Chamber of Commerce I News I southdadenewsleader.com

His unswerving determination to be part of the underwater world helped see him through the rigors of
the grueling U.S. Navy's School for Deep Sea Diving and Salvage. He spent thirty-three years in the
Navy, twenty-eight of those on station as a Navy diver. He not only performed several high-profile

salvage operations, but also became a certified Master SCUBA Instructor. His passion for diving
extended far beyond his naval career though.

South Dade Chamber of Commerce Chairman Julio Guzman included only a few of
Burke's accomplishments in making the official announcement of his selection as the new Chief
   Executive Officer.

"I'd like to commend the South Dade Chamber's Executive Committee which did a tremendous job
vetting many qualified individuals that applied for the position. We're excited about the selection of
Les Burke, given he's a South Dade local with extensive knowledge of our community and dedicated to
forward progression. He's a 33-year Navy Veteran, holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Florida State
University, and is also the founder of the Non-Profit, Jr Scientists in the Sea, which is an educational
   program for kids with

on- the-job training. He's an outstanding individual with many great qualifications and I'm looking
forward to his contribution to the SDCC and the South Dade Community."

Having relocated to Florida in 1981, Burke and his wife, Donna, did indeed forge strong ties to
Homestead and surrounding communities. She is now the Director for Military and Veteran Services
for Miami-Dade College (MDC), a position that covers all eight campuses.

His short-term goal for the Chamber is to focus on membership and services to members. "We're
coming out of COVID and there were services we could not provide during the closures and
restrictions. Restoring those is a high priority."

An issue many businesses are struggling with is a workforce shortage and Burke is experienced in
workforce development. Having been in the Office of the General Counsel for the Florida Department
of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DOACS), Headquarters, Transportation Security Administration

   Week of Events

Miami, May 24, 2021 — In commemoration of Memorial Day, Miami Dade College's (MDC)
Student Life division joins the nation's remembrance of fallen soldiers and pays tribute to the
country's heroes with a week of college-wide activities May 24-28.

Events will include writing letters and messages of encouragement for U.S. troops deployed all over
the world. The MDC community can participate in this initiative of the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach
Organization by visiting https://tinyurl.com/arte358 (https://tinyurl.com/arte358). Missives will be
included in care packages sent to the soldiers. Students may also share tributes on social media with
   #BeMDC.

Additionally, Student Life will coordinate the installation of Missing Man tables
(https://warmemorialcenter.org/missing-man-table/) throughout all MDC campuses honoring
fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members. Finally, students can partake in this
   celebration virtually at https://sharknet.mdc.edu/news/226242
(https://sharknet.mdc.edu/news/226242), where they will find various ways to learn, engage, and give
   back this Memorial Day.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last
Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It
originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many
Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and
   participating in parades.

MDC Physician Assistant Students Win Southeast
Challenge Bowl and Head to National Competition

Miami, May 11, 2021 - Miami Dade College's (MDC) physician assistant (PA) students recently
won the Southeast Challenge Bowl organized by the American Association of Physician Assistants
(AAPA). Next the team will compete for its third national title on May 24 at the AAPA National
   Medical Virtual Challenge Bowl.

MDC won the regional competition with two teams of three students each, including Andrew
Grossman, Jaime Chavez, Ginna Lora Ortega, Shirene Tabarestani, Ernesto Martell Polo, and
Antonio Canero. As in years past, they were coached by Dr. Nicolas Massimini, chair of the Student
Progress Committee at the Medical Campus and also a graduate of MDC's renowned PA program. Dr.
Massimini has coached MDC's challenge bowl teams for over a decade.

"We are extremely proud to once again win this prestigious competition which covers several states
and we are looking forward to participating at the National Challenge later this month," said Medical
Campus President Dr. Bryan Stewart. "Competing in these events, which is totally voluntary,
requires a great deal of dedication with students having to devote many hours to discussing subjects
and presentations, in addition to their demanding curriculum."

MDC's Physician Assistant program offers Associate in Science and Bachelor of Applied Science
degrees, as well as an opportunity to complete a bachelor's and master's degree simultaneously. For

John Jolt Explores Miami's Supernatural Side
With His Debut ER Spooks & Apparitions
OLIVIA MCAULEY I MAY 27, 2021 1 8:00AM

Jimmy's Eastside Diner is a favorite haunt of John Caignet (AKA John Jolt).

It is also a favorite among birthday celebrants, as evidenced when, during an
interview with New Times at the restaurant — which famously appeared in the
Oscar-winning 2016 flick Moonlight — guests, not once, not twice, but three times,
erupted into singing "Happy Birthday."
"God, I love this place. This is the best," said the Miami native, soaking up the
familiar song and surroundings.

The music producer and cofounder of local online radio station Jolt Radio recently
dropped his debut EP, Spooks & Apparitions, on Veridian Club, the label he shares
with his younger brother Pedro, AKA Kid Bougie. (Vinyl copies can be preordered
via Bandcamp and will be available locally on Record Store Day on June 12.)
While Caignet did what seems compulsory for Miami creatives — a two-semester
stint in New York City — he always felt the magnetic pull of the Magic City, and
its airwaves.

The latter, in fact, is in his blood.

His great-granduncle, Felix Benjamin Caignet, was a pioneer of radio broadcasting
in Cuba in the 1930s. As a creator of Latin American soap operas, he made it his
habit to sit and eavesdrop on conversations at his local café in search of new
material.

"When I was growing up in Coral Gables, my family would tell us stories about
him," Caignet says. "My mother would make us record these cassette tapes for our
grandmother, and we would talk into the mike, and we'd really get into it."

Reflecting on his family history, Caignet acknowledges a certain sense of
fatefulness surrounding his journey into the world of music and radio. His debut EP
is a sort of ode to this experience, a declaration that Miami is far more supernatural
than superficial.

While studying psychology at Miami Dade College, Caignet passed through the
Kendall campus one day and caught sight of the school's radio station.

"I stepped in and immediately felt like I was at home," he says.

Following that encounter, Caignet began to focus on all things music, radio, and
engineering. He spent every spare hour he had at the station, hoping that through
osmosis, he could soak up every deep cut out there. The station's music director
began to hand over the reins while he went on breaks before finally suggesting that
the young enthusiast start his own endeavor.

From creating DIY radio skits as kids to making music together as teens, Caignet
always found a kindred spirit in his brother, which led them to start the boogie-,
instrumental-, and synth-pop-focused label Veridian in 2007, and the online
nonprofit radio station Jolt Radio in 2010. Located in Allapattah, Jolt acts as much
as a community hub as it does the nucleus for countless original programs.
It was also Pedro Caignet who pushed John to put together Spooks & Apparitions, a
conceptual four-track voyage that investigates Miami's mystical side while
simultaneously acting as an insider's guide to the minutiae of Miami etiquette. It's a
nod to the city's transient nature and a love letter to the people who stick it out here.
The EP is half well-thought-out 1980s thriller soundtrack and half sci-fi Miami
boogie dream. All the tracks stand out as stylish productions in their own right,
regardless of their fun, in-the-know narrative elements — which certainly help
make the listening experience that much more enjoyable.

The title track, "Spooks & Apparitions," is an uncanny synth-laden composition
that speaks in a tongue-in-cheek way to the friends who suddenly reappear after
having ditched the city, popping up at neighborhood bars like ghosts from past
lives. The closing track, "Seance at the Graveyard Inn," is an ode to the Liberty
City convenience store located across fro, a graveyard. Caignet and his friend
Mikey Ramirez, owner of Technique Records, have long suspected it to be a spot
for spooky happenings.

"Conceptually speaking, I think of the record like a charm, a physical manifestation
that the [third track] 'Midnight Society' conjured during 'Seance at the Graveyard
Inn,'" he explains.

Caignet's hopes eventually to produce a visual counterpart for the record, a short
film that tells the entire four-track story from start to finish. A script is in place,
with only the production details yet to be worked out.
Adding to the "meant to be" element, it was a happy accident that led mastering
engineer Dietrich Schoenemann (Philip Glass, Aphex Twins, the Cranes) to hop on
the project at the last minute, after the original plans for mastering fell through.
Caignet credits friend Ramiro Jeancarlo (AKA Staccato Du Mal) for making it all
fall into place. Also hopping on the project was local artist Richard Vergez, who
designed the EP's artwork.
"It all felt serendipitous," Caignet says.

As the record began to take form, an unexpected renaissance was percolating on the
sidelines.

While Jolt Radio's open-door policy was put on hold during the pandemic, several
programs carried on remotely, as did Caignet's efforts to keep content flowing.
With everyone's collective urge to connect, Jolt Radio's numbers began to
skyrocket.

"I started noticing that the listenership was going through the roof, right around the
time Italy went into lockdown. And it was, in fact, those countries, Italy and Spain,
that started tuning in," he explains. "I knew I had to start programming the hell out
of it. I started recording skits and polishing the hell out of it."

Around that same time, Caignet's web designer reached out to set up a Twitch
stream, which is now a fully incorporated element of the Jolt Radio experience.

Whether following in the footsteps of his great-granduncle at Jolt Radio or carving
out his own niche in the world of proto-house and Miami boogie, the creative
juices of John Caignet seem to be flowing like the free refills at Jimmy's Diner.

Live Arts Miami Presents New, Interactive Theater
   Experience Created by Fereshteh Toosi

Miami, May 11, 2021 - Miami Dade College's (MDC) Live Arts Miami continues its successful LALA
Performance Series, featuring unforgettable new works addressing climate change and
sustainability with Oil Ancestors: Metaphysical Hotline, a remarkable, participatory experience via
telephone by Miami-based interdisciplinary artist and 2020/2021 LALA Artists In Residence
   Fereshteh Toosi.

Inspired by the work of Buddhist eco-philosopher and author, Joanna Macy, Metaphysical Hotline
blurs the line between reality and fiction, fostering a sense of community and trust, all while
illuminating the complex relationship between humanity's past, present, and future. It will encourage
callers to remember their history as ancestors - both heroic and harrowing - while considering how
our personal stories contribute to the larger narrative around climate crisis.

Delivered as a 30-40-minute, one-on-one phone call, Metaphysical Hotline is described as "interactive
audio time-travel" which "seeks curious, open-minded callers for live and intimate conversations, with
an expert ancestral communications medium, about power and responsibility in an era of rapid
    global change."

Given the intimate and immersive nature of the performance, participation is limited to 24 one-on-
one performances scheduled from 4 to 8 PM (EDT) on select dates between Wednesday, June 9 and
    Sunday, June 20.

To be considered for participation, interested individuals must apply by May 23, 2021 at 11:59 PM
(EDT) by completing a pre-performance questionnaire
(https://3g14fbbx14v.typeform.com/to/IJAvigZz)-the first step into the mesmerizing world created by
this powerful and deeply-affecting performance. Participants will be chosen by lottery and will receive
a text message with an invitation to confirm their appointment time. Any individual 15 years or older
is invited and encouraged to apply. All application responses will serve to expand a "Metaphysical
Hotline research archive" devoted to the ongoing investigation of at-home ancestral transmissions.

The LALA Performance Series is the capstone to Live Arts Miami's Live Arts Lab Alliance Artist
(LALA) residency program (https://liveartsmiami.org/initiatives/lala/), which empowers local
performing artists from different backgrounds and disciplines to generate new work and establish

The Idea Center at Miami Dade College
Collaborates with MIT to Offer 2021 IDEA2 Program

Apply for IDEA2 program and put your healthcare technology ideas to work

Miami, May 21, 2021 - For the first time, The Idea Center at Miami Dade College (MDC) is
collaborating with MIT IinQ, an international biomedical technology innovation consortium at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Institute of Medical Engineering and Science to
offer the virtual 2021 edition of IDEA2, a program providing transformative mentorship, expertise,
and funding to emerging innovators with fresh and compelling new healthcare technology projects.

The Idea Center at MDC will coordinate the Miami-Dade County's participation in IDEA2, and its
Director, Gustavo Grande, will participate as a mentor during the six-month program, which kicks off
   June 24.

"MDC's participation in IDEA2 heightens our ability to carry out our mission to prepare students for
success with excellent innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship skills," Grande said. "We invite
anyone with a great idea to address unmet medical needs to apply."

The annual IDEA2 program, which runs from June through December, recruits teams with strong
early-stage ideas for new technologies and innovation-driven enterprises. Through intensive
innovation workshops and hand-selected expert mentor relationships, teams strengthen their
technology focus and strategic plans. They complete IDEA2 with technology innovation projects
clearly focused on compelling medical needs, broad networks of connections, and improved abilities
to compete for collaborators and funding. This year, IDEA2 has a special emphasis on projects that
can improve health for women and communities historically underserved in biomedical research and
healthcare, which is particularly important given the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on these
    communities.

This collaboration was enabled in part by funding from the Global CoCreation Lab, which fosters
innovation growth and expansion in Miami-Dade County by creating partnerships that accelerate
    health tech, innovation-driven new enterprises.

"All eyes are on the emergence of Miami's technology industry, and we know that there are many
local entrepreneurs with impactful and inventive ideas in the healthcare tech space," said Alejandro
Roman, Executive Director of Global CoCreation Lab. "MIT's IDEA2 provides a valuable resource for
