VILDMARKSVÄGEN 2019/2020 THE WILDERNESS ROAD Foto: Emma Eriksson Mountain hiking on wheels in Jämtland och Lappland
Mountain hiking on wheels Take a spectacular 500 km journey through pristine wilderness in the northern mountains. Photo: segel.se The part of Vildmarksvägen over The Wilderness Road – doesn’t that sound tempting. A road through the wilderness from Strömsund in Jämtland Stekenjokk is open from early over the mountains to Vilhelmina in Lappland, and then June till mid of October. back to Strömsund via Dorotea and Hoting. The road pas- ses through several places with exotic names like Gädde- de, Stekenjokk, Klimpfjäll and Saxnäs. The road goes through Lappland’s cultural districts, through alpine forests and above the tree line – and the wilderness is just a hop, skip and jump away. So the concept of “hiking by car” is very real. When you get out of your car, you are in the wilderness... Above the tree line are vast mountain heaths and accessible peaks. The air is clear, the silence is deafening and the water is refreshing and, of course, drinkable. Out with the mug! Whether you head out on a multi-day hike with a tent or take a short car trip, the Wilderness Road is the best way to get up above the tree line. Photo: Mats Ericsson Photo: Tor Persson Don’t drive too fast, stop frequently and take in the mountain atmosp- here and scents during your long or short trip. Artic Fox Gyrfalcon Explore the Wilderness Road! Heaps of summer snow! You can follow Vildmarksvä- gen by car, motorcycle or bike. Don’t forget to bring Photo: Lena Magnusson a camera for some unusual summer photos!! Photo: Ulla Hopponen Photo: Madeleine Aaraas Enter our photo contest! What do we remember most from our travels? What we’ve seen, heard, smelled and tasted, of course. There is a large selection of local food producers and artisans along the Wilderness Road. Award-winning cheeses and whey, delicious flat bread, good deli meats, fish, marmalade… Be sure to visit the shops! The presentation starts in Wild Strömsund and continues over the mountains to Vilhelmina, Dorotea and Hoting, and ends back in Strömsund. beautiful Photo: Vilhelmina turistinformation and delicious Handmade food Café Frostviken Keramik, Häggnäset +46(0)72-733 16 03 Hillsands Getgård (farm shop) +46(0)670-320 33 Restaurang & Pizzeria, Gäddede +46(0)672-100 50 Fågelberget Gårdschark (farm shop) +46(0)72-067 85 22 Pilgrimshotellet, Gäddede +46(0)672-104 20 Norgefarargården, Klimpfjäll (craft) +46(0)70-551 57 14 Storgatan 38 Kök-Café-Bar-Pizza, Gäddede +46(0)70-331 34 93 Lövnäsgården, Lövnäs +46(0)70-216 12 64 Frostvikens hembygdsgård (café), Gäddede +46(0)672-105 19 EG:s Vilt Rökeri, Lomsjökullen +46(0)940-350 04 Gäddede Camping & Stugby (grill) +46(0)672-100 35 Breviksgården, Skansholm (fish) +46(0)70-265 64 64 Ankarede Café +46(0)672-210 02 Drottninglandets Sylt & Saft, Vilhelmina (beeries) +46(0)940-201 50 Restaurang Fjällripan, Stora Blåsjön +46(0)672-211 99 Farmens Delikatesser, Vilhelmina +46(0)70-358 50 98 Kaffestugan café, Stora Blåsjön +46(0)76-145 48 91 Bergmans Fisk & Vilt, Lövliden +46(0)940-250 90 Hotell Klimpfjäll +46(0)940-711 80 Pralineriet, Vilhelmina +46(0)70-669 94 86 Klimpfjällsgården (italian restaurant) +46(0)940-710 52 Valåhöjdens Bär, Hoting (beeries) +46(0)70-361 91 99 Norgefarargården, Klimpfjäll +46(0)70-551 57 14 Näslund Café, Fatmomakke +46(0)70-393 49 36 Craft Saxnäsgården +46(0)940-377 00 Murås Bruk, Muråsen (smithy) +46(0)670-400 39 Marsfjäll Mountain Lodge, Saxnäs +46(0)940-700 03 Jordemor butik och verkstad, Strömsund (ceramics)+46(0)76-804 98 62 Grillkojan i Trappstegsforsen +46(0)76-762 00 51 Ullboa, Havsnäs +46(0)70-693 64 11 Restaurang Prima, Skansholm +46(0)940-60 08 97 Frostviken Keramik, Häggnäset +46(0)72-733 16 03 Café Skogsblommorna, Skog +46(0)70-367 34 20, +46(0)70-660 43 47 Fjällslöjd, Saxnäs +46(0)940-700 71, +46(0)70-307 69 10 Bergmans Fisk & Vilt, Lövliden +46(0)940-250 90 Risfjells sameslöjd, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-152 05 Hotell Wilhelmina +46(0)940-554 20 Guld & Silversmide, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-101 01 Lilla Hotellet, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-150 59 Ateljé Tage Lundin, Vilhelmina +46(0)73-832 60 87 Kateaes Krog, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-109 11 Kyrkstadens Diversehandel, Vilhelmina +46(0)76-113 45 67 Pizzeria Quinto, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-121 33 Fyra Händer, Östra Ormsjö +46(0)70-674 61 53 Pizzeria Lascité, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-550 34 Borga Hantverk, Borgafjäll +46(0)942-421 77, +46(0)70-547 15 13 Pizzeria Lilla Fjället, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-105 90 Marikes hantverksbod, Dorotea +46(0)70-210 33 37 Frasses, Vilhelmina +46(0)940-126 00 Hjortron & Troll, Fågelsta +46(0)70-395 35 66 Hotell Dorotea +46(0)942-477 80 Borgafjäll Hotell Äventyr & Spa (closed 3 May–23 July) +46(0)942-421 00 Food and cafés Borgagården, Borga (restaurant) +46(0)942-420 22 Restaurang Nordica, Strömsund +46(0)670-61 10 00 Borgafjäll snowcamp, Idet +46(0)942-420 42, +46(0)70-633 62 00 Restaurang China, Strömsund +46(0)670-61 42 60 Ankis Bar, Dorotea (restaurant) +46(0)942-100 68 La Mareé restaurang och pizzeria, Strömsund +46(0)670-134 70 Restaurang och pizzeria Dorotea +46(0)942-107 10 Hörnet Restaurang & Bar, Strömsund +46(0)670-61 41 30 Görans konditori, Dorotea +46(0)942-100 07 Annexet Grill & restaurang, Strömsund +46(0)670-61 40 00 My Way, Dorotea +46(0)942-140 30 Niels café & restaurang, Strömsund +46(0)72-201 85 22 Doro Camp Lapland, Dorotea +46(0)73-080 77 38 Café ICA Simonsons, Strömsund +46(0)670-171 70 Pizzeria Hoting +46(0)0671-108 80 Kafé Tomten, hembygdsgården Strömsund +46(0)70-341 52 48 Rastomat Grill, Hoting +46(0)671-103 42 Strömsunds Campings gatukök +46(0)670-164 10 Café Koppen, Hoting +46(0)73-076 07 92 Skrovmålet, Strömsund +46(0)670-106 20 Fjällsikten, Tåsjöberget (restaurant) +46(0)671-200 50, +46(0)73-083 42 83 Frasses, Strömsund +46(0)670-103 62 Norråkers Handel (café) +46(0)671-300 02

Through the kingdom of bears Whether you start from Strömsund or Vilhelmina, you pass through forest and historic Sami mountain communities before you reach the bare mountainside. A good place to start is at Ströms hembygds- gård in Strömsund, an open-air museum with a picturesque central location on the shore of Ströms Vattudal. The museum showcases the region’s history with some 30 historic buildings featuring exhibits and environments from days gone by. Beloved storyteller, poet and actor Beppe Bears Strömsund has more brown bears per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world. The bears are shy, but with a bit of luck you Wolgers has his own exhibition here, Mannen i may spot one along the road. Keep your eyes open! Vattudalen (the Man from Vattudalen). Wolgers came to be strongly associated with Strömsund – largely thanks to his animated film Dunder- klumpen about Jorm the Giant, and his poems about the Vattudalen region, but also through art, music, theatre and television productions. From there, drive north through the region with the most brown bears in the whole world, and pass the Hällingsåfallet waterfall. Although really, ‘pass’ is the wrong word. Of course you’ll stop at the 43-metre-high waterfall crashing down into an 800-metre-long waterfilled canyon. On a sunny day, you’ll see anywhere from three to six rainbows in the water spray. Jorm the Giant from the children’s film Dunderklumpen welcomes To really get a good feel for the canyon, it’s best you to Ströms hembygdsgård. This local history museum has a play- to start from the rest area 2.5 km south of the ground and an open pre-school where children can experience a bit of fall. A marked trail starts there and follows the life in the olden days. Hällingsån Canyon upstream. Frostviken Keramik, a few kilometres away, is a must-see with its gorgeous hand-made ceramics and summer café. Gäddede Turistinformation has a lovely indoor exhibition on the history and unique countryside of Frostviken. The tourist office is surrounded by Fjällparken, where signs guide you around the mountain flora. Several popular walking trails depart from An- karede Kyrkstad, a charming village with Sami Photo: Gerd Sjöberg huts, church cottages, a chapel and a summer café.
