VIEWER GUIDE APR 2022 | vol. 24 no. 4 A SERVICE OF CASCADE PUBLIC MEDIA Two-Night Series Premiere MON Apr 4 | 8p Great Performances at the Met: Nature: The Trick Fire Shut Up in My Bones Hippo King 1
Fire Shut Up in My Bones FRI Apr 1 | 9p The second opera from six-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, Fire Shut Up in My Bones makes history this season as the first opera by a Black composer to be performed by the Met. But beyond this important milestone, the work itself takes audiences on a profound, often painful, musical and dramatic journey. To tell this story, Blanchard conjures a sound world that weaves together jazz and gospel idioms, probing and incisive melodies, and an intricate orchestral palette. Benjamin Franklin SERIES PREMIERE MON Apr 4 | 8p Ken Burns’ two-night, four-hour documentary Benjamin Franklin explores the revolutionary life of one of the 18th Century’s most consequential and compelling personalities, whose work and words unlocked the mystery of electricity and helped create the United States. Franklin’s 84 years (1706-1790) spanned an epoch of momentous change in science, technology, literature, politics and government — fields he himself advanced through a lifelong commitment to societal and self- improvement. Over the course of seven impossibly prolific decades, Franklin ascended professional and social ladders, rising from a printer’s apprentice in provincial Boston to the most popular man in Paris, France. The Trick PREMIERE FRI Apr 22 | 10p This conspiracy thriller and cautionary tale airing on Earth Day tells the story of the 2009 Climategate scandal, when the media storm undermined confidence in the science of climate change. Professor Phil Jones (Jason Watkins) and his team at the University of East Anglia find themselves in the middle of a major investigation with their 30 years of research work being questioned in the first “fake news” attack. KCTS 9 401 Mercer Street Seattle, WA 98109 REVE AL YO U R WO RLD New episodes Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. Hippo King | Apr 6 A giant hippo bull – a king amongst the largest concentration of hippos on this planet – has an incredible story to tell. A story normally hidden from human eyes and almost always misunderstood – because his secret life happens beneath the water and under cover of darkness. Follow the life of the “Hippo King” as we reveal the true character of one of the planet’s largest land mammals. American Arctic | Apr 13 Vast, wild and untouched, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is where some of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles unfold. Situated in the northeastern corner of Alaska, this refuge is the wildest place left in North America. For five years, photographer and cinematographer Florian Schulz has lived here, tracking the porcupine caribou herd on the longest land animal migration on Earth and witnessing extraordinary wildlife moments along the way. Portugal: Wild Land on the Edge | Apr 27 Portugal was once a great power that linked the Old and New worlds — and this history is reflected in the country’s landscapes and wildlife. Wild horses small enough to fit on the cramped ocean-going ships were tamed in the northern mountains and exported to gold-greedy conquistadors. Now Portugal’s seahorses are threatened by modern global trade: illegal fishing to supply Far Eastern exotic medicines. The eucalyptus trees once imported from Australia to revive the timber industry now cause devastating forest fires. Air, Earth, Fire and Water — in this country the ancient elements still rule.
