Venus Retrograde
Introduction
The year 2021 is ending with quite a dramatic punch what with Full Moon in the air sign of
Gemini. This lunation makes us mindful of ideas, perceptions, apprehensions desires and
wants. Lot looking to hook up, to find closure, or just to cause some drama. Along with the
Full Moon just the very next day on the 19th Venus the planet of love and abundance,
Caresses, and pleasure, goes into one of its rare retrograde cycles. Once in 18 months it
spins backwards and this time she spins in Capricorn, which makes it realistically interesting.
Venus is retrograde from December 19 to January 29. Venus’s shadow period
begins November 17th and ends March 1st. Note that the shadow period began before
Venus turns retrograde. The shadow period begins again when retrograde ends on January
29 till March 1st.The shadow period ends when Venus again passes over the degree at
which it first turned retrograde. Venus makes you practical and you may experience yourself
taking realistic steps. You may curb yourself from Impulsive buying or being too emotional.
Just observe how you may think twice whether you should splurge or not. The mind and
heart will be in constant struggle.
As the planet of feelings, love and values, Venus retrograde periods are times when we re-
assess what—and who—we value. It is advisable to consider this period inappropriate for
getting married or starting new relationships, you are advised to assess the situation or
relationship for a month and half before indulging in any kind of commitment. Major
financial deals are not advised during this period. Venus retrograde cycles are good times
for creating & reassessing your financial plans and deliberating on the relationships in your
life. Having deliberated and thought over your finances or love life then taking steps forward
once Venus goes direct will be a lot easier and fruitful.

When Venus retrogrades in Capricorn the fear of rejection is felt strongly. You may assess if a relationship is hampering your ambitions or goals. This is applicable to both personal and professional relationships. Capricorn rules protocol and our sense of decorum. We might feel especially annoyed or turned off by those who are stepping over the line. You need to be extra cautions when your past relationships seem to reappear in your life. Best Procedures While Venus is Retrograde There’s nothing truly to fear about Venus retrograde, but it’s always wise to take special care during this cycle. Keep to yourself and understand yourself; Not wise to get into any new relationships, because our perceptions are bound to be skewed. However, if you are beginning a new relationship under this influence then give it time. Existing relationship will undergo rollercoaster feelings, be sincere to yourself, do not compromise your values. Any sort of compromise will not work. A relationship survives or thrives only if it has a strong basis of values. More importantly, note that the last two times Venus was retrograde in the sign of Capricorn were from December 21, 2013, to January 31, 2014, and from December 24, 2005, to February 3, 2005 (eight-year intervals). It’s highly likely that we will deal with similar issues during the 2021-2022 Venus retrograde cycle as we did during these cycles in 2004/5 and 2013/14 (and previous ones). Important Dates During the Venus Retrograde Cycle Significant times for Venus-ruled matters during this 2021-2022 Venus retrograde cycle are December 24-25, when Venus Rx aligns with Pluto, on December 28-29, when Venus aligns with Mercury, and on January 8th, when Venus aligns with the Sun. Venus also forms a sextile to Neptune on January 4-5, helping us see the beauty in imperfect situations and people. Importantly, the days Venus turn retrograde (December 19th) and direct (January 29, 2022) are important. In fact, these days can be especially troublesome as we’re transitioning to a new direction, in a state of flux. For the first date, December 19th, with Venus also parallel Mars, we can be a little more impulsive or brusque than is necessary, and we may later regret it since we can also be quite confused about what we want. At the time that Venus forms an inferior conjunction with the Sun (January 8th), relationship issues magnify. Fateful events can occur now. This is similar to a New Moon but instead of the Moon, it marks the beginning of a new Venus cycle. We are symbolically in the dark during the retrograde, and then starting fresh and re-energized from this date forward. Impulsiveness and lack of preparation are issues now. When Mercury forms a conjunction with retrograde Venus on December 28-29, there can be a lot of conversation about relationships, especially past ones. New light may be shed on an old problem. This can be useful but also a little too intellectual. Particularly around the days of Venus’ stations on December 19th, 2021, and January 29th, 2022, watch for confused situations and try not to say too much. If you are itching to argue with a lover, try to hold off. It is likely that you will have a change of heart once the station passes, and you can do some damage in the meantime. Note also that Venus is in the retrograde “zone” from November 17th, 2021, to March 1st, 2022. From January 29th to March 1st, 2022, Venus continues to traverse the degrees she covered during her retrograde period. 6 29th, issues are not expected to be entirely resolved until after March 1st, but they’re working themselves out. Sometimes people rush to get things started before the retrograde period, and this is not a great idea. This is because the event’s progressed chart will see the retrograde Venus soon after. Where is Venus Retrograde transiting by house in your natal chart? Does it form a conjunction with a natal planet, your Ascendant, or Midheaven? Venus goes direct on January 29th, 2022. You have 40 days to review, revisit, re-evaluate - and ultimately reset your emotional and relationship patterns so that you find out what you truly want. There’s no coincidence that Venus is retrograde for exactly 40 days. The number 40 is a sacred number in pretty much every religion and is usually associated with the fulfilment of promises, BUT ONLY after a period of testing, trial, and probation. The purpose of this “trial” or Venus retrograde period is to guide you back to your heart, to allow you to release what is false and no longer serves your path, so that you can experience a rebirth of the heart. There are 3 Venus-Pluto conjunctions - we had the first on December 11th, the 2nd December the last one will be happening in March 2022… so this is a lengthy love affair. Why is there a problem with Venus in Capricorn sharing the same room with Pluto? If it was not for Pluto, Venus in Capricorn would do what she knows best: achieve, get what she wants, be on top of things. But Pluto doesn’t work this way. Pluto represents the Ego death and humbling, the profound process of transformation when we get to accept that there are higher forces at play that we can’t control. For Venus in Capricorn this doesn’t come easy. Venus in Capricorn is the feminist, the female CEO, the woman who has worked hard her entire life to get what she wants, has worked hard to earn other people’s respect. But hard work, discipline and all those things that make Capricorn a Capricorn, don’t impress Pluto much. Pluto doesn’t care how much work we did to get on our hard earned paths - because his goal is to show us that there are things that we can’t get when we follow the non-Plutonic way, no matter how much we want them. With Pluto, the harder you try, the deeper you sink. That’s not because Pluto wants to deny us what we want. Pluto has a big heart (and we will get to this aspect a bit later). Pluto only cares about what is real and stripped of ego. Pluto will destroy everything that is not authentic. The promotion? The successful spouse? The designer bags? These are things that Venus in Capricorn may work hard for, but as long as they are driven by some sort of societal ideal “I want this because everyone else wants it”, “I want this because it makes me look successful and accomplished”, then Pluto will expose it for what it is - a lack of self-love, or an inability to connect with other humans from an authentic, vulnerable place. 7 And this is where Pluto comes in. How do we get out of our personal gratification bubble and have a real exchange? How do we allow another human being in? How do we get real about what we want? “I’m just true to my feelings”. We may think that we know what we want but Pluto comes to show us that we don’t. What we really want, what we value is so primal, so rooted in our identity, that it is directing our life in a way that leaves us powerless – until we become aware of the underlying dynamic. We are slaves to our desires, our addictions, to instant gratifications, our primal emotional pathways. We know something is not quite right, but we can’t help ourselves - we go for it, running on our emotional default mode. Whether that’s emptying the fridge, binge shopping or meaningless sex - our primal emotional pathways, the dopamine kick, the reward is driving our actions and enslaves us. We may crave connection, a higher love, but how do we get there when all we know is what we’ve been doing all our lives? There’s always something brutal about Pluto’s revelations, no matter how much shadow work we have done in the past. The first step of the Plutonic emotional deconditioning process is to become aware of the default mode of our feelings. The first part of Venus retrogrades (from now until January 9th, when Venus meets up with the Sun) will expose “the problem”. The more we try to resist Pluto’s messages, the harder Pluto will hit us. Pluto always wins, even if it must wipe out everything that we value in our lives. It is only then that Pluto can show us what truly holds value for us. Venus Retrograde in Capricorn - Aspects What makes this Venus retrograde cycle so intense, is not only the connection Venus makes with Pluto, but also Chiron in the retrogradation chart. When Venus goes retrograde, she is in a tight 1-degree conjunction with Pluto. And on the very same day Venus goes retrograde, Chiron goes direct. Pluto and Chiron are very intense energies to work with - both Pluto and Chiron are interested in shadow work. Neither Pluto, nor Chiron shy away from the dark side. They go as deep as needed, they excavate whatever needs to be brought to the surface, so that whatever needs transforming is transformed. When Venus goes retrograde, a very powerful emotional revelation will unveil a hidden wound, and at the same time, will set in motion the necessary healing process. We may suddenly become aware of what we want, of what we value, and we will also suddenly become aware that this time, there’s no “doing the same things over and over again” - we must go to the Underworld first. Venus retrograde is a journey into the Underworld. Venus slows down, rising lower and lower each day, closer and closer to the horizon, and at some point, she just disappears, she just vanishes into the glaring rays of the Sun. There are many myths around Venus’ disappearance from the evening sky, including the Inanna’s descent into the Underworld. When Venus is retrograde, we too need to go deep within ourselves to do the required emotional work. Venus is not alone, and this time she's holding hands with Mars. In fact, we have an incredibly passionate triple conjunction on March 3rd, 2022 - Venus, Mars and Pluto all align at the 27th degree of Capricorn!
