WELLINGTON AFC Club History Formed in 1892, we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially, the club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s, we gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making us one of the league’s longest continuously-serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in the 1978-79 season and played at Premier Division level from 1981-82 to 1984-85 and 2008-09 to 2010-11. The team were then promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016-17 season. In their first season back in the Premier Division, the team finished a creditable 15 th and also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. The following season, the team finished in 16th place and, for the past two seasons have been near the foot of the table but were showing signs of improvement when football was brought to a halt by the Coronavirus pandemic. This season, the Toolstation Western League has been restructured which has seen the departure of a number of ‘old friends’ and the arrival of a number of new teams promoted from the South West Peninsula League. As a result, manager Tim Legg and the team will face new challenges but will aim to continue to improve. The Club’s Reserves played in the Devon and Exeter League Division One for four seasons and were top of the table in Division One West with seven wins from seven games before the 2020-21 campaign was brought to an early close. This season, under new manager Steve Trevelyan, the team are once again playing in Division One in 2021-22. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons, the A team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League for the 2018-19 season when they finished a creditable third, gaining promotion to Division Two for the 2019-20 season. They were topping the table when the season was forced to end and were promoted to Division One for last season. They won their group in the league’s Covid Cup and also won the Seward Cup held over from 2019-20. Under manager Luke O’Hara, the team are in Division One again this season. The club’s Ladies played in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division but found it difficult to compete with more experienced teams and played in Division Two (Flexi) last season, finishing a creditable third when the season resumed. Under manager Nyima Touray, they are playing at the same level this campaign. The club’s Ladies played in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division but found it difficult to compete with more experienced teams and played in Division Two (Flexi) last
season, finishing a creditable third when the season resumed. Under manager Nyima Touray, they are playing at the same level this campaign. This season, the club will again be running no fewer than 23 teams in our Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight through to 18 and we also have a thriving Disability section. In recent years, these teams have had mixed fortunes in their leagues but a number have won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups and, in 2018-19 season, the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year We continue to work with the local Town and District Councils and Wellington Sports Federation on the Somerset West and Taunton Pitch Strategy and are hoping to eventually establish a new First Team facility at the new Longforth Farm estate on the edge of the town. This would then free-up the Playing Field for other teams to use and hopefully trigger a programme to improve other facilities. Outside of our core footballing activities, Wellington AFC is home to several darts and skittles teams and we run a full programme of social events for members and non- members alike. The impressive Function Room and Lounge are available for hire – please contact the Clubhouse Manager, Jenny Oxby, on 01823 665410 for details.

WELCOME We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bitton AFC for our first Toolstation League Premier Division fixture of the 2021 – 22 season. The First Team last played a home match ten and a half months ago on Saturday 24th October when the visitors were Cribbs who won the game 2-1, our goal-scorer was Jesse Howe. That was the last game the team played at home before the Country went into lock-down and apart from away games the following week at Exmouth and Bridport on Boxing Day the Team did not play again until starting preparations for this season. Because of ground sharing with the Cricket Club, all games played so far this season have been played away with three victories against Street and Ashton & Backwell and Bridport, draws against Mousehole and Clevedon and defeats at the hands of Buckland and Tavistock together with a defeat in the FA Cup away to Ilfracombe. The First Team will be home again next Saturday to Brislington with a 3.00pm kick- off. In the meantime the Ladies will be home tomorrow to Wells City Ladies First in the Somerset County Womens League with a 2.00pm kick-off and the Reserves will be home to Topsham Town 2nds in the Devon & Exeter League Division One on Wednesday, 15th September with a 7.00pm kick-off. LIGHTING UP TIME Thanks to all of the Tangerine Army Volunteers – some of them pictured, who had an early start last Saturday morning to put the floodlights back up at the Playing Field. Thanks also to R and A Commercials of Taunton for their help.
TOOLSTATION WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION TAVISTOCK 3 1 WELLINGTON Wellington’s three-match unbeaten run was ended with defeat away to second- placed Tavistock. But they could hold their heads high after a gutsy performance against a side tipped by many to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Manager Tim Legg was forced into three changes from the side which had done so well recently with the absence of midfielders Glen Wright and Miles Quick along with defender Jack Bown-Porter. He brought in vastly experienced defender Kevin Nicholson while there was a first start of the season for Mason Raymond after his hamstring injury and a return for Jamie Vaughan-Ryall. Nicholson, who is Head of Coaching at Exeter City, belied his 40 years with an assured performance in defence, displaying all the experience gained from a professional career with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Torquay United. On a glorious afternoon in Devon, the opening was cat and mouse before Tavistock took the lead after 15 minutes. A weaving run into the Wellington defence led to the ball being played to Tallan Burns, who thumped home a low drive. Although the home side went close on a couple of occasions, the visitors nearly equalised midway through the half as Sam Towler fired just wide. Wellington were not to be denied and drew level eight minutes into the second half. A clever ball over the top by Jake Quick played in Josh Baker and the youngster showed great composure under pressure to advance on goal before beating keeper Josh Oak. Ironically, Baker had been suffering from an injury and limped off immediately after scoring to be replaced by another home-grown youngster, Rohan Poulsom. Towler saw a long-range dipper turned over by Oak before Tavistock put the issue beyond doubt in the dying minutes when Liam Prynn scored from close range. Wellington used both of their other subs including a rare run-out for Legg for the final 17 minutes. But they saved the best until last as popular midfielder Harry Walford came on for the closing stages – his first appearance since suffering a badly broken leg at Hallen nearly a year ago. Welcome back, Harry!
TOOLSTATION WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION BRIDPORT 0 4 WELLINGTON Wellington bounced back from their defeat at Tavistock with a comfortable victory - and clean sheet - away to bottom-of-the-table Bridport. Tim Legg’s side had seen their three-game unbeaten run ended on Saturday by the side lying second but they showed no ill effects with a confident performance. Legg made four changes to his line-up with Jack Bown-Porter, Miles Quick and Glen Wright all returning after being unavailable at Tavistock to replace Kevin Nicholson, Scott Merritt and Jamie Vaughan-Ryall. There was also a call-up for Jordan Casey, usually a defender, who replaced the injured Josh Baker up front. Wellington looked comfortable on the ball from the kick-off and went ahead with a quality goal after 18 minutes. A slick move ended with Josh Champion playing the ball to Wright just outside the box and he turned before sending a superb shot into the top corner. Both keepers pulled off excellent reflex saves to keep the score at 1-0 - Shay Allen denying home striker Christian Blango and, at the other end, Greg Taylor thwarting Jake Quick. But Quick was not to be denied and doubled Wellington’s advantage after 37 minutes when he was set up by Casey and showed quick feet to net from close range. Bridport started the second half brightly only for Wellington to virtually seal the points eight minutes after the restart. Miles Quick fed Casey on the right and he made ground before driving low across the keeper for a clinical finish. Although the home side rattled the bar from long range, Wellington held firm and added a fourth in the dying minutes as sub Nathan Byrne swept the ball home from a pull-back.

EXTRACT FROM TOOLSTATION BULLETIN 4TH SEPTEMBER 2021 FA Cup: All three remaining Western League sides were knocked out of this season’s FA Cup following defeats against higher-ranked opposition. Exmouth were beaten 3-1 at Bolitho Park against Truro City, with Rocky Neal, Ryan Brett and Tyler Harvey all scoring in the first half for the home side. Shepton Mallet capitulated at home to Taunton, conceding five goals after the interval on their way to a humbling 8-1 loss, with Toby Holmes notching a hat-trick for the away side. Ten-man Bridgwater threatened a late fightback away at Basingstoke, only to concede twice in the closing stages to lose 4-1 at the Winklebury Sports Complex. Having conceded a brace of goals to Conor Lynch either side of the interval, Bridgy’s task then got even tougher when Mike Duffy was dismissed on the hour mark. The hosts missed a penalty to put the game beyond doubt, and Bridgwater capitalised, with Nick Woodrow halving the arrears with around ten minutes remaining. Throwing extra men forward in the search of an equaliser, United were picked off, with D’Andre Brown and then Lynch giving the scoreline a more one-sided look. Premier Division: In a game which went down to the wire, Saltash scored twice in the final five minutes to complete a dramatic 3-2 turnaround win at home to Buckland. Having fallen behind to an early Ryan Bush header, Saltash saw Dave Barker’s 20th minute penalty saved, before eventually getting back on level terms when Sam Hughes struck on his 400th appearance for the club. The Ashes didn’t have long to celebrate and were on the back foot once more when Owen Stockton fired home an unstoppable drive from more than 20 yards out to put the away side back in front. With the game now into the final ten minutes, Saltash were awarded a lifeline when the referee awarded them a penalty for handball in the box, with Chris Menhenhick making no mistake from 12 yards out to level the scores. Rob Farkins was sent off for his protestations following the award of the spot kick, and the ten men of Buckland were
unable to hold out against their rampant hosts with Barker crossing for Hughes to make it 3-2 deep into stoppage time. Mousehole flew out of the blocks at home to Millbrook, scoring three times in the opening quarter of an hour on their way to a 5-1 victory. Tallan Mitchell, Mark Goldsworthy and Callam Mconie all scored during the early stages to put Mousehole in complete control, with Jake Foster seemingly giving the visitors a slight foothold five minutes before the interval. That positivity didn’t last long however, with Goldsworthy restring the three-goal buffer in the 43rd minute, before Mitchell added a fifth goal midway through the second half to wrap up victory. Harry Stevens and Liam Short each scored twice during Ilfracombe’s 5-2 win at home to Bridport, while Helston beat Cadbury Heath 2-0 thanks to goals in the final 20 minutes from Craig Veal and Stu Bowker. Brislington moved into the top half following an impressive 3-2 win at home to league-leaders Bitton on Saturday afternoon. George Jones was the hero for Bris, scoring in either half for the hosts after Jordan Scadding had put them in front during the opening 20 minutes. Bitton were always in the contest, and saw goals from Dean Griffiths and Josh Egan keep them close, but they couldn’t find a late equaliser and succumbed to their first loss this season. Tavistock took advantage of that Bitton defeat, and now find themselves level atop the division after beating Wellington 3-1 at Langsford Park. The slightly delayed kick-off didn’t disrupt Tavistock who took the lead inside ten minutes of the opening kick-off through Tallan Burns. A strong response from Welly saw youngster Josh Baker level for them at the beginning of the second half, but the Lambs found a second wind, scoring twice more through Josh Grant and Liam Prynn to secure all three points. Ashton & Backwell gained local bragging rights, scoring a late winner on their way to a 3-2 derby triumph away at Clevedon, while Keynsham maintained their strong start, cancelling out Harry Foster’s early opener to claim a 1-1 draw away at Street.
