Face and Ear Biometrics for Person Authentication Abstract N. BOODHOO-JAHANGEER The focus of this study is the use of face and ear biometric for authentication. Face and ear biometrics do not require direct contact with the sensor, since their image can be taken from Area of Study: a distance, thus hygiene issues do not arise. However, face recognition systems suffer from Computer Vision, Biometrics, Pattern occlusion of hair and make-ups. Ear-based recognition is not affected by environmental factors Recognition such as mood, health and clothing. Also the outer part of ear is relatively unaffected by ageing, Faculty: making it better suited for long-term identification. Engineering Supervisor: The objective of this study is to investigate whether the ear can be used as a biometric for Assoc Prof Sunilduth Baichoo authentication and whether it can be used as an extra feature to improve an existing face Contact: recognition system, especially in cases such as occlusion. nazmeen182@yahoo.com Current Status: Education Officer Publications • B. A Biometric Security System Using Dorsal Hand Vein Patterns and Palmprints Abstract Maleika HEENAYE-MAMODE KHAN There is practically no wholesome approach in ensuring total security of systems. In this revolu- tionized and digital world, the increasing need of security to protect individuals and information has led to a rise in developing biometric systems over traditional security systems. The quest Area of Study: for improving existing biometric techniques with a view to enhance the security of the systems Biometrics, Image processing is in demand. Finding more reliable, practical and more acceptable biometrics and techniques is Faculty: attracting the attention of researchers. Engineering Supervisor: Though existing biometrics like face recognition, fingerprints and iris have existed since several Prof. S. Controlled Composting of Lignocellulosic Wastes to produce the Best Substrate for the Cultivation of the Pleurotus pulmonarius var. sajor-caju Mushroom Yaswaree MIHILALL Abstract Area of Study The oyster mushroom is the second most cultivated edible mushroom worldwide after the button mush- Controlled composting, room. It is consumed for both gastronomic and medicinal purposes. This white-rot basidiomycete grows Mycotechnology primarily on hardwoods and numerous pasteurised non-composted and composted lignocellulosic wastes. Since its introduction to Mauritius, Pleurotus pulmonarius var. sajor-caju has been cultivated on crushed bagasse, Faculty: from sugar cane, supplemented with maize seeds and calcium carbonate. However, local milling factories are Engineering transferring this resource to power plants for cogeneration. The challenge right now is to find an alternative Supervisor: substrate that can substitute bagasse. Consequently, this practice offers attractive prospects of profitability Professor (Mrs) Romeela Mohee, CSK converting lignocellulosic wastes from agricultural fields, forests, and industry into protein rich biomass while Contact providing a sustainable solution towards alleviating the load of refuse being landfilled at the Mare Chicose heyvaruna@yahoo.co.uk Sanitary Landfill (MCSL). Five local potential lignocellulosics have been identified, combined at varying compo- sitional rates, trialled for controlled composting and analysed for their physicochemical characteristics along with sugarcane bagasse. Out of the four trials, BGCP was the optimal one with a minimum composting time. It was demonstrated that BGCP produced the highest yield and biological efficiency of Pleurotus pulmonarius var. sajor-caju when compared to the BGC, BGCW, BGCWp composts and the conventional substrate, bagasse.
