OUR RIDGETOWN CAMPUS CREST The University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus crest has been an important illustration of our agricultural history since our first Agriculture Diploma graduating class in 1953. The very first crest reflected our role as the Western Ontario Agriculture School (W.O.A.S.), and the wheat and corn stalk illustrations on the first Ridgetown crest, remain on our campus crest today. Throughout the decades, our purpose as a leading agricultural education and research institution has remained constant, while our institution’s name has evolved several times over the six plus decades of academic program delivery. As our institution’s name changed, so did our campus crest. Today’s Ridgetown Campus crest, designed in 2007, exhibits a livestock farm visual, demonstrating our endless passion for agricultural education; the dog and stethoscope images reflect our commitment to veterinary industry programs; and the tree and flower graphics remind us of our environmental management and horticulture diploma offerings and the 200 hectares that our teaching grounds, farm, and research trials encompass. The University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus crest encompasses our commitment to life-long learning and it has been, and continues to be seen throughout the province, worn on the leather jackets of proud Ridgetown Westag alumni since 1953. T HE D R. R ON P ITBLADO T EACHING A WARD OF E XCELLENCE Each year, the campus recognizes one faculty member for teaching excellence and innovation. We are pleased to recognize Dr. Dave Hooker, Associate Professor, Field Crop Agronomy as this year’s recipient! What makes Dr. Hooker (better known to students as Dr. Dave) remarkable is how he has embraced the challenge of teaching online – with ability, effectiveness, and vivacity. He has demonstrated an enormous effort to create new and engaging course content, integrating many new technical tools to create video lectures that provide students with excellent “in the field” content. As one student nominator for the award said, “Dr. Dave brings an unrivalled enthusiasm that brightens everyone's day and exemplifies this award. The amount of effort he put into his courses, and his constant requests for feedback really outlines why he deserves this award. He really made this COVID-19 school year better.” Another student supporter told us that Dr. Dave’s lectures are both informative and entertaining: “Dr. Dave has made online learning fun by making videos that were so interesting. He incorporated humour into every lecture. With an instructor like Dr. Dave, I couldn’t help but love to learn the latest best practices in crop production! His unique charisma makes every class different and interesting, something we all desperately needed this academic school year.” Dr. Hooker has also been an integral leader of the Ridgetown Campus Soil and Crop Club for students. He abundantly connects with current and past students through social media, as well as through his extension presentations, across the province, by communicating his applied research findings in a valued and practical way. Dr. Hooker has gone above and beyond to demonstrate his commitment to high quality education for 13 years, and the staff and students at Ridgetown Campus sincerely wish to recognize him for his amazing teaching efforts! We asked Dr. Hooker, “What do you love most about teaching?” “The main reason I love teaching is the opportunity to serve with my amazing teaching colleagues. I am also very honoured to have a highly influential role in the continual growth and development of students towards their career and life goals. I take the opportunity to get to know the students I teach the best I can, and in return, I have the privilege to stay connected with many of them as Ridgetown alumni.” #RCGrad | 7
